Surgery ahead for Holtz's wife

Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C.-- Lou Holtz's wife, who has battled throat cancer for the past few years, is expected to have surgery next week to remove her adrenal gland.

Holtz, the South Carolina coach, was with his wife at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., this week for her second examination.

The couple's son, South Carolina offensive coordinator Skip Holtz, said test results confirmed what doctors first thought: Beth Holtz will have her adrenal gland and a cyst on her ovary removed. They will not do anything with spots found on her lung and kidney.

Lou Holtz has said his wife would need to spend about a week in the hospital after Monday's operation. She is expected to recuperate at the family's home in Orlando, Fla.

Lou Holtz will head back to the Mayo Clinic sometime Sunday, athletic spokesman Kerry Tharp said.

Holtz 's Gamecocks lost to Mississippi 36-10 at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night. South Carolina has the nation's longest major college losing streak at 15.
