COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Mississippi didn't need overtime in this one as Joe Gunn ran for 127 yards and Duce McAllister scored twice in a 36-10 victory Saturday night that kept coach Lou Holtz winless at South Carolina.

The Gamecocks (0-5, 0-3 Southeastern Conference) extended their losing streak, Division I-A's longest, to 15 games. Never before has Holtz lost this many to open a season and only once, in 1969 and 1970 when he dropped seven straight at William & Mary, has he gone this long without a victory.

The Rebels (4-1, 2-1) went to overtime in losing to Vanderbilt two weeks ago and last week needed extra time to beat former coach Tommy Tuberville and Auburn. But Romaro Miler's passing and the running of Gunn and McAllister took care of things early.

Miller's 43-yard pass to McAllister in the second quarter set up McAllister's 1-yard touchdown run and Ole Miss led 10-0.

On South Carolina's next series, Al Rice picked up a ball left on the ground by fullback Teddy Salters and went 35 yards untouched into the end zone.

Even when South Carolina seemed to gain momentum, Ole Miss snatched it away.

After Andrew Pinnock's 3-yard touchdown run got South Carolina within 17-7, Miller hooked up with Jamie Armstrong on a 33-yard TD pass 20 seconds before halftime.

When the Gamecocks' finished off their first second-half drive with a 42-yard field goal, Miller directed a 10-play drive to a field goal to restore Mississippi's margin.

Freshman Ryan Brewer fumbled South Carolina's next kickoff, L.J. Taylor recovered and, one play later, McAllister turned a reverse into a 31-yard touchdown.

The Rebels gained 249 yards in the first half, only 13 less than South Carolina had allowed per game this year, and finished with 393 yards.

It was more heartache on the field for Holtz, distracted this week because of his wife Beth's continuing fight with throat cancer. He was with her at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on Wednesday and Friday and will return Sunday for her scheduled operation.

Holtz's magic has not yet worked on the Gamecocks and news gets worse.

His three freshman starters _ quarterback Mikal Goodman, tailback Derek Watson and fullback Pinnock _ couldn't get the offense going. South Carolina had only 16 yards rushing on 36 carries.

Two more starters were lost with injuries. Receiver-kick returner Boo Williams tore a ligament in his right knee and Melvin Paige had slightly torn cartilage in his right knee.
