Mountaineers leave Knights in dust

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Redshirt freshman Avon Cobourne rushed for 141 yards and two short touchdowns as West Virginia used a 41-point first half to whip Rutgers 62-16 Saturday.

The 62 points were the most scored by West Virginia (2-4, 1-2 Big East) since a 69-3 victory over Cincinnati in 1989. The Scarlet Knights (0-6, 0-3) gave up 58 points to Virginia Tech a week ago.

West Virginia's 41 first-half points were more than it had scored in four of five previous games this season.

Rutgers actually held a 244-171 yardage advantage in the first half, but West Virginia got great special teams play and turned two turnovers into short scores.

The Mountaineers, who ended a three-game losing streak, broke the game open with three touchdowns in a 2:22 span of the second quarter.

Cobourne piled up 59 rushing yards on one 11-play drive, capping it with a 2-yard TD run for a 24-10 lead.

The ensuing kickoff bounced off Dennis Thomas' knee and West Virginia recovered at the Rutgers 19. Redshirt freshman Cooper Rego scored from the 6 two plays later.

West Virginia's Perlo Bastien returned an interception 33 yards and Brad Lewis hit Anthony Becht with a 3-yard TD toss for a 38-10 lead.

Lewis, in his second start in place of injured Marc Bulger, threw two short touchdown passes and scored on a 5-yard run. He was 9-of-15 for 138 yards.

The tone of the game was set in the first three minutes when the teams combined for three touchdowns.

Things got so out of hand that West Virginia's Jerry Porter, a converted safety who started at wide receiver, relieved Lewis late in the third quarter.
