BOX SCORE
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- UCLA nearly lived a horrible nightmare Saturday night. Last week, Arizona State moved 80 yards on four plays in the final 53 seconds to score the winning touchdown in a 28-27 victory over the Bruins. Oregon came within one yard of doing it to the Bruins again. Marshaun Tucker made a diving catch of A.J. Feeley's 20-yard pass at UCLA's 1-yard line on the game's final play, preserving a 34-29 victory for the Bruins over the Ducks. "I got a little nervous," UCLA coach Bob Toledo said, "We're in a (three-deep on the final play) not letting them get over the final stripe. As long as the ball doesn't get over the goal line, we win. It was the last play of the game." Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said he told his team at the start of the final period that it could make the greatest fourth quarter comeback in school history. The Ducks came oh so close. "We have to play more quarters like that," Bellotti said. "We need to play more consistently. We made too many mistakes early on and UCLA took advantage of them. We fell asleep at points in the game and we didn't get momentum until the fourth quarter." Cory Paus passed for a career-high 332 yards and two touchdowns -- both to Danny Farmer -- to lead the Bruins to a 34-10 lead entering the final 15 minutes. That's when things got sticky. Matt Smith's 81-yard interception return on the first play of the fourth quarter triggered a three-touchdown explosion by the Ducks in a span of less than four minutes to make it 34-29. The other touchdowns came on a 44-yard pass from Feeley to Keenan Howry and an 11-yard run by Reuben Droughns. As it turned out, there would be no more scoring. Farmer, a senior, caught seven passes for a career-high 196 yards as the Bruins (3-3, 1-2 Pac-10) extended their regular-season winning streak at the Rose Bowl to 13 games. Oregon (3-3, 1-2) lost its seventh straight on the road. Oregon started its final drive at its own 11 with 1:16 remaining. Keith Brown and Farmer scored touchdowns 55 seconds apart late in the second quarter to put the Bruins ahead for good. The Ducks led 10-6 when Santi Hall sacked Feeley and forced a fumble that Billy Pieper recovered at Oregon's 18-yard line. Brown scored on a 3-yard run three plays later to give UCLA a 13-10 lead with 1:33 left before halftime. On the next scrimmage play, Feeley was intercepted by Marcus Reese, setting up a 33-yard drive capped by Paus' 11-yard pass to Farmer, and giving UCLA a 20-10 lead. Brown and Farmer also scored touchdowns in the third quarter -- Brown on a 10-yard run and Farmer on a 65-yard pass from Paus -- to give UCLA its 34-10 lead. Paus, a freshman, made his third start and completed 21 of 34 passes with two interceptions, both by Smith. Brown gained 69 yards on 27 carries. Feeley completed 20 of 47 passes for 313 yards with two interceptions, and Droughns, playing despite an injured rib, picked up 43 yards on 11 carries. Oregon needed just three plays to move 84 yards after receiving the opening kickoff to take a 7-0 lead. The touchdown came on a 20-yard pass from Feeley to Chad Chance. UCLA's Chris Griffith kicked field goals of 47 and 48 yards, sandwiched around an 18-yard field goal by Oregon's Nathan Villegas in the second quarter. Villegas kicked his field goal after Oregon was unable to score a touchdown following a first-and-goal at the one. | ALSO SEE College Football Scoreboard Oregon Clubhouse UCLA Clubhouse |
