PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Quarterback Don McDowell ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Bucknell scored 23 unanswered points, then held off a late-game surge by Pennsylvania to defeat the Quakers 23-16 on Saturday.

Down 23-7 with 5:41 left in the game, Gavin Hoffmann hit Erik Bolinder with a 49-yard scoring pass, before Penn (1-2) recovered the ensuing onside kick and went on a 22-yard drive that ended with Jason Feinberg's 39-yard field goal as the Quakers narrowed the deficit to a touchdown.

Bucknell (4-1) recovered the next Penn onside kick but failed to move the ball, and the Quakers fielded the punt at their own 25 with 48 seconds left. The Bison defense finally held off Penn after defensive end John Papadakis forced Hoffmann to fumble, and Bucknell nose guard Eric Green recovered the loose ball.

McDowell had two 2-yard TD runs, and led Bucknell on two fourth-quarter scoring drives. He found Jim Horan for a 6-yard scoring pass with 11:36 left in the game.

Kris Ryan led all rushers with 152 yards on 24 carries, including a 33-yard score in the first quarter for Penn. McDowell was 13-of-28 passing for 106 yards, while Hoffmann finished 19-of-31 for 205 yards.
