Woods' triple-double paves way for Wildcats

RECAP | BOX SCORE

SEATTLE (AP) -- Arizona center Loren Woods is an imposing force at 7-foot-1. Against Washington he seemed larger.

Woods had his second career triple-double Saturday night as the No. 21 Wildcats defeated Washington 89-64.

"He's like 8-3 or something," said 6-foot Washington guard Curtis Allen.

Woods finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

"Loren was a rock in there," said Jim Rosborough, Arizona's interim coach. "Ten blocks, that's a handful. We haven't seen too many triple-doubles in Pac-10 history."

Wood's triple-double was the fifth in Arizona history and the 13th in Pac-10 play.

"My teammates tell me they let their guys get past so I can block more shots," Woods said. "We're just playing good defense."

Michael Wright had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (10-5, 3-1 Pac-10).

Will Perkins had his seventh double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds for Washington (7-9, 1-3), which has lost five of its last six games. No other Washington player scored in double digits.

Arizona played its fifth game without head coach Lute Olson, whose wife, Bobbi, died of ovarian cancer Jan. 1 at age 65. Rosborough is 3-2, including two straight wins.

"We're more comfortable with Coach Ros," Wright said. "We'd love to have Coach Olson back on the bench, but we're starting to get back into a flow."

Arizona held Washington to a season-low 28.6 percent shooting.

It was the third time this season the Wildcats have held an opponent below 30 percent overall. They limited Washington State to 29 percent shooting in their 84-51 win Thursday night.

The Wildcats' front line of Woods, Wright (6-7) and Richard Jefferson (6-7) made it tough for the Huskies to maneuver in the key.

"For the most part we took good shots, but we didn't get a lot inside that wasn't contested," Washington coach Bob Bender said.

Arizona spent much of the second half at the line and converted 30 of 47 free throws in the game. Washington shot 14-for-26 from the line.

Wright made 8 of 9 free throws.

"The thing about Michael Wright is you have to play him without fouling," Bender said. "You have to get him to miss shots and that's not going to happen very often."

The Huskies pulled within eight points with 17:27 left on Thalo Green's 3-pointer, which ended the team's 0-for-7 drought from beyond the arc.

But Wright answered by scoring three straight baskets for a 48-34 Arizona lead. He scored eight of his team's first nine points in the second half. Wright had 14 points in the first half.

Guard Gilbert Arenas, who made six 3-pointers Thursday, had 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting.

Arizona took the lead for good with 15:06 left in the first half on Lamont Frazier's layin. Washington led 8-4 before the Wildcats went on a 19-4 run.
