BALTIMORE (AP) -- Terence Morris went 8-for-8 and scored 20 points, and Juan Dixon had 18 points as Maryland (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) defeated Iowa 83-65 Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Playing its first regular-season game against a Big Ten opponent since the 1985-86 season, Maryland scored the first 10 points and never trailed. The Terrapins (5-1) led by 11 at halftime and used a 10-0 run early in the second half to go up by 19.

Kyle Galloway scored a career-high 18 points for the Hawkeyes (2-3), who have lost three of four since opening the season by beating defending NCAA champion Connecticut.

Lonny Baxter had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins, who were coming off a third-place finish in the Preseason NIT. The only shot Morris missed was at the foul line, where he went 4-for-5.

Iowa, limited to 35 percent shooting in the first half, scored the opening basket of the second half. Morris then made three straight baskets, including a dunk, before Baxter added a dunk and Danny Miller scored inside to make it 52-33 with 16:24 left.

Maryland hit seven of its first nine shots in the half to open up a 20-point lead. But the Terrapins, who blew most of an 18-point lead against Notre Dame in the NIT consolation game, let Iowa back in the game.

The Hawkeyes scored six straight points to close to 57-43, and a driving layup by Galloway made it 62-53 with 10:20 to go. Morris then scored Maryland's next eight points to push the margin to 10.

After Galloway sank a 3-pointer, Mike Mardesich hit a baseline jumper and a foul shot to make it 73-63 with 4:11 remaining. Iowa scored only two points in the final five minutes.

The Terrapins' game-opening, 10-point run included 3-pointers by Miller and Steve Blake. After a timeout, Galloway hit a 3-pointer to start a 13-6 run that brought Iowa to 16-13.

The Hawkeyes then made only two baskets in a seven-minute span while Dixon scored seven points in a 14-5 surge that put Maryland up by 12. Iowa was 7-for-23 from the floor with six turnovers in the opening 14 minutes.

Miller's third 3-pointer of the half made it 40-27 with 1:38 left.
