Michigan advances to face Colorado College in Midwest

Associated Press

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Jed Ortmeyer figured he owed his teammates.

And he certainly paid up, with interest, as his power-play goal with 1:31 left gave Michigan a 2-1 victory over Maine in a NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional game on Saturday.

Michigan (29-9-3) will play Colorado College on Sunday in the Regional Final. Colorado College defeated Wayne State 4-2 earlier on Saturday.

Maine ends the season at 24-10-5.

Ortmeyer poked in a loose puck from in front during a goal-mouth scramble with Travis Wight off for highsticking.

"I felt like I owed the team a goal,'' Ortmeyer said. "My man got to the net and they were able to score to tie it.''

That was Maine's Colin Shields, who tied the game at 1 by tipping in Martin Kariya's pass, out of the corner, from the slot with 3:54 remaining.

Michigan took a 1-0 lead 6:47 into the third period when Eric Nystrom put in the rebound of a Michael Woodford shot off a goal-mouth scramble.

Maine's Robert Liscak hit the goal post on a breakaway 1:30 into the third period.

Michigan's Al Montoya stopped 34 shots and Maine goaltender Frank Doyle stopped 25.

"I think if you're a fan of goalies, you certainly enjoyed this one,'' Maine coach Tim Whitehead said. "Because both guys were just fantastic.''

Regional host Michigan had the home-ice advantage as a sellout crowd of 6,798 cheered the Wolverines on.

"Monty (Montoya) kept us in the game,'' Ortmeyer said. "And the crowd was able to give us a boost towards the end.''

It was the first time that Michigan has beaten Maine in four NCAA Tournament games. Two, 1993 and 1995 (which were both NCAA semifinal games) went into overtime. The 1995 NCAA semifinal went into triple overtime.

"For us to come back and score that late goal was fitting.'' Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "Because it has gone the other way before.''

Colorado College 4, Wayne State 2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) --Three players had a goal and an assist apiece as Colorado College defeated Wayne State 4-2 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional Final.

The Tigers (30-6-5) on Sunday will face the winner of Saturday's second game between Maine and Michigan.

The Warriors end the season 21-17-2 after their first-ever NCAA Tournament game.

Brett Sterling, James Laux and Noah Clarke each had a goal and an assist and Peter Sejna had two assists for Colorado College.

Wayne State closed the gap to 3-2 6:31 into the third period on a Billy Collins score, but Tom Preissing answered for the Tigers with 9:58 left.

The Warriors tied the game 1-1 4:51 into the second period when Keith Stanich scored from the high slot. But Colorado College regained its one-goal lead just 40 seconds later on Laux's goal.

Clarke made it 3-1 with 5:51 left in the second period when he put in a rebound on the power play.

Colorado College opened the scoring with 3:34 left in the first period on Sterling's power-play goal.
