Knoepfli, Hayes score two goals each for Big Red

Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Mike Knoepfli and Shane Hynes scored two goals apiece on Saturday as Cornell beat Minnesota State, Mankato 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA East Regional.

Cornell (29-4-1) squandered an early two-goal lead before erupting for three unanswered goals. Hynes deflected a Matt Moulson slap shot past Jon Volp (32 saves) for a power-play goal at 13:56 of the second period for a 3-2 lead after two periods.

Knoepfli knocked down a Charlie Cook shot, then wheeled and whipped home a shot from the high slot at 6:42 of the third period to make it 4-2.

Cornell scored its third power-play goal of the game at 10:34 when Sam Paolini deflected a Ryan Vesce shot past Volp. It was Vesce's 100th career point, making him the first Cornell junior to reach that plateau since Joe Nieuwendyk in the 1986-87 season.

Knoepfli gave Cornell a 1-0 lead at 1:53 of the first period when he lofted the rebound of a Doug Murray shot past Volp. Hynes followed with a power-play goal at 9:07, deflecting home a Knoepfli pass.

The Mavericks (20-11-0) pulled within 2-1 when Dave Sorenson finished off a 2-on-1 break with Grant Stevenson at 10:12 of the first period. Brock Becker's power-play goal at 3:16 of the second period tied the game at 2-2.

Volp preserved the tie with three outstanding saves midway through the period. But Hynes' power-play goal broke the tie and sent the Big Red on the way to their 10th consecutive victory.

Cornell's David LeNeveu made 18 saves while improving his record to 27-2-6.

The top-seeded Big Red, 13-0-1 in their last 14 games, advance to Sunday's championship game against Boston College.

Boston College 1, Ohio State 0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Matti Kaltiainen made 26 saves and Tony Voce scored a short-handed goal to lead Boston College to a 1-0 victory over Ohio State in an NCAA Tournament East Regional semifinal game on Saturday.

The Eagles (24-10-4) will play Cornell for the regional championship on Sunday, with the winner earning a berth in the Frozen Four. Cornell defeated Minnesota State-Mankato, 5-2, in Saturday's other semifinal game.

Boston College's victory was the first by a 1-0 score in the last 30 years of NCAA Tournament play. The shutout was Kaltiainen's first of the season and the second of his career.

Voce scored the game's only goal at 5:56 of the first period, while Ohio State was on a power play. J.D. Forrest broke up a play in the neutral zone and fed the puck to Voce who broke in alone and beat Mike Betz up high for his 23rd goal of the season.

The Buckeyes (25-13-5) came within inches of tying the game while skating on a power play four minutes into the third period. But Kaltiainen robbed Dave Steckel with a pad save.
