SEAN FENTON: Killed. A 20-year-old Yale junior from Newport
Beach, Calif., Fenton played football for Yale as a freshman. He
later joined the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, designed Web pages
for Yale groups and was known to help fellow students who had
computer problems. "He was usually the one to be the designated
driver, to take responsibility, to help everyone out," said his
roommate, Walter Badgett.
KYLE BURNAT: Killed. A 19-year-old sophomore from Atlanta,
Burnat was a pitcher. The right-hander threw in three games as a
freshman, allowing three hits and one run. Burnat was a summer
intern for Georgia Sen. Zell Miller and a star on the senator's
softball team. "Kyle was a very, very special child. He excelled
in everything that he did and always exceeded his parents'
expectations," said his father, Lawrence Burnat.
ANDREW DWYER: Killed. Dwyer was a 19-year-old sophomore from
Hobe Sound, Fla. A friend and Yale football player, Will Conroy,
said he and Dwyer played squash and hung around together. "He was
a good guy, and we had good times together," Conroy said. "He was
as nice and polite a kid as you can find."
NICHOLAS GRASS: Killed. Grass, 19, of Holyoke, Mass., was a
sophomore and a pitcher on Yale's baseball team. Grass made 13
appearances last season, compiling a 1-3 record over 21.2 innings.
In April he had his first collegiate victory, 9-7 over Sacred
Heart. Tom Brassil, the head baseball coach at Holyoke High School,
said Grass joined the Holyoke varsity team as a sophomore and
turned himself into the best pitcher in western Massachusetts
through hard work and intense offseason workouts.
ERIC WENZEL: Critically injured. Wenzel, 21, of Garden City,
N.Y., is a senior fullback on the football team and the starting
goalie for the Yale lacrosse team. He made 14 saves last year in
the Bulldogs' 15-13 win over Princeton to break Princeton's 37-game
Ivy League winning streak. He worked the past two summers as a Wall
Street intern. "He's an unbelievable kid," said Bob Defliese, an
assistant football coach in Garden City.
BRETT SMITH: Critically injured. Smith is a 19-year-old
freshman from Papillion, Neb. A reserve quarterback for the
Bulldogs, he was a national merit semifinalist last year at
Papillion-LaVista High School. His coach there, Gene Suhr,
described him as "always upbeat and fun to be around."
ZACHORY BRADLEY: Injured, in stable condition. Bradley, 19, is
a sophomore and infielder from Alexander, Ark. He is Yale's fastest
player, stealing 11 bases in 13 attempts last year. He hit .250
with two home runs and 10 RBI.
CAMERON FINE: Injured, in stable condition. Fine, 18, of
Phoenix, is a freshman and offensive lineman.
CHRISTOPHER GARY: Injured, in stable condition, Fine, 18, is a freshman linebacker from Nazareth, Pa. His high school football coach, Dave "Whitey" Williams, said Gary had an impressive work ethic on the field and planned to study engineering at Yale. "He's a great kid," Williams said. "It's a sad situation for all." |
