Grass was sophomore pitcher for Yale

Associated Press

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Athletic events resumed Saturday at Yale University following a daylong hiatus in memory of the four students killed when an SUV packed with nine friends hit a jackknifed tractor-trailer on a snowy highway.

Nicholas Grass, 19, of Holyoke, Mass., died Saturday.

He had helped lead the baseball team to the regional finals as a pitcher in 2001, and Yale athletic director Tom Beckett announced his death during an afternoon women's basketball game.

"As we are about to begin this competition with our colleagues and friends from Brown University, we pause to remember the four students lost in this tragic event," Beckett said before a moment of silence.

Most of the students in the crash were members of school's football and baseball teams, including two who remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Yale officials sent an e-mail to all students Saturday telling them counselors were available and inviting any who lived off-campus to eat in residential dining halls for free this weekend if they wanted to be with their classmates.

A memorial service was held Friday night at Yale's gymnasium.

Three students -- junior Sean Fenton, 20, of Newport Beach, Calif.; sophomore Kyle Burnat, 19, of Atlanta; and sophomore Andrew Dwyer, 19, of Hobe Sound, Fla. -- died Friday of severe head injuries, the state medical examiner's office said Saturday.

State police said Fenton was driving.

"He was usually the one to be the designated driver, to take responsibility, to help everyone out," said his roommate, Walter Badgett.

The nine students were returning from a fraternity event in New York early Friday when the SUV hit the jackknifed tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 in Fairfield.

Four students remained in area hospitals. Two -- freshman Brett D. Smith, 19, of Papillion, Neb.; and senior Eric W. Wenzel, 21, of Garden City, N.Y. -- suffered critical injuries. Smith was at Norwalk Hospital; Wenzel was at Bridgeport Hospital.

Zachery A. Bradley, 19, a sophomore from Alexander, Ark., was in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital. Christopher W. Gary, 18, a freshman from Nazareth, Pa., was in stable condition at Norwalk Hospital.

A fifth student, freshman Cameron Fine of Phoenix, was discharged Saturday from St. Vincent's.

The investigation will take several weeks, including toxicology tests, an examination of the weather and road conditions and a reconstruction of the accident, said state police Sgt. J. Paul Vance.

"There's just a lot of legwork needing to be done," he said.

All nine students were members or pledges of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. This is pledge week at Yale and the students were returning from a pledge event in New York.

"We do not believe there was any violation of any student regulations," said Yale spokesman Tom Conroy.

National leaders of DKE were on campus Saturday to investigate the crash. They did not return calls seeking comment, and no one answered the door at the fraternity's two houses near campus.

Former members of DKE, which is popular among Yale athletes, include President George W. Bush and his father, both of whom played baseball for Yale.
