Syracuse reaches 20th straight NCAA semifinal

Associated Press

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y -- Ryan Boyle's unassisted goal with 4 seconds remaining gave defending champion Princeton a 14-13 victory over Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the NCAA lacrosse championship Saturday.

The Tigers (9-4), winners of seven straight, advanced to the semifinals next Saturday at Rutgers. They will play Johns Hopkins (12-1), a 13-12 overtime winner over Massachusetts in their quarterfinal match Sunday.

In Saturday's first quarterfinal, Michael Wright, Josh Coffman and Michael Springer each scored two goals as No. 2 Syracuse edged Duke 10-9.

The Orangemen (13-2), who have captured seven NCAA tournament titles, the last in 2000, will meet the winner of Sunday's game between No. 3 Virginia (10-3) and Cornell (11-3) in the semifinals.

Walid Hajj scored with 44 seconds remaining to pull the Hoyas (11-4) into a 13-13 tie.

Sean Hartofilis led the Tigers with four goals and an assist. Josh White and B.J. Prager each added three goals, while Boyle scored twice and had three assists.

Mike Hammer had four goals and an assist for the Hoyas, and Trevor Walker added four goals.

Princeton has won the NCAA tournament title six times, including three of the last five.

Matt Remkowski and Matt Monfett each scored twice for Duke (8-7).

Springer's second goal at 14:28 of the fourth quarter gave Syracuse a 9-6 advantage, but the Blue Devils closed within one on Kevin Cassese's unassisted goal at 12:29 of the final quarter.
