Points to ponder as the NBA season heads into '03

By Bill Walton

Find a reason to believe -- If I listen long enough to you

  • Why do diminutive point guards walk the ball up the court?

  • Why on last-shot scenarios do teams wait soooooo long?

  • Then why does one guy dribble the whole possession for himself?

  • While watching the end of the Arizona-LSU game, I wondered amazingly how college basketball can have a rule where a violation of the rules -- calling a timeout with none left -- allows you to maintain possession of the ball?

  • I've noticed a huge change since Trent Lott was forced to quit. Was this guy and all those he represents a new story? Then Jesse Jackson said that this was like changing the cover on a book. What does he mean by that?

  • Did you see Frank Rich's excellent piece in Saturday's New York Times on the subject -- why isn't he in charge?

If I gave you time to change my mind
I'd find a way, to leave the past behind

In this time of peace, we head to war
I'm more than ever a proud patriot for peace
Fully aware that the first casualty of war is always the truth
And realize all too well that an eye for an eye leaves the world blind.

Knowing, that you lied, straight faced, while I cried

  • Milwaukee is playing really well right now. Did they really lose at home to Toronto and then get blown out by Memphis? Anthony Mason's record of destroying teams remains intact. At least they were able to beat the Knicks -- how bad must they be?

  • The Lakers sure looked terrific in handling Toronto recently. And I feel so much better now that Shaq clarified that he was just trying to motivate his teammates by verbally trashing them through the media. Are Anthony Mason and Stephon Marbury his role models?

Still I'd like to find a reason to believe

  • Do victories against Golden State count in the league standings?

  • Why do they have college coaches assisting on the national team when they have no college players?

  • Former baseball player and current Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo just had his second leg amputated at the knee. Remember him the next time you hear a coach or player talking about dealing with adversity.

  • Michael Olowokandi sure had a nice line in a home loss against recent high schooler Amare Stoudamire -- 2 points on 1-5 shooting in 28 minutes. With a self-appraised $80 million dollar price tag, do you think he knows that people are watching? Fortunately he was dynamic and vibrant in a huge win the next night out -- against Denver.

And though I want you, you're just not what I need
Someone like you, makes it hard to live without somebody else

  • Nuggets Coach Jeff Bzdelick is hands down NBA Coach of the Year. To already have six wins with that squad -- amazing.

  • Warm and fuzzy holiday story by Tom Friend on ESPN.com and in ESPN The Magazine on the people lining up to be LeBron James' new and next dad now that his current one is in jail.

  • While I'm a big Steve Lavin fan, some of the Bruin faithful want Phil Jackson to ride in on a big white horse.

  • Are the Phoenix Suns really back in the NBA after all these years?

    A reason to believe

  • Is it possible that Yao Ming is already more popular than Shaq? Only the All-Star ballots know for sure.

  • Thank goodness that the winter solstice is behind us. Summer is just around the corner.

  • Why can't there be more basketball families like the Barrys? Why doesn't Rick have one of the league's premier jobs? Heck, why not any league job? This is embarrassing.

    I need a reason

  • Why haven't more coaches been fired this year? It's not as if things are just peachy.

  • When Indiana's Mike Davis and Miami's Pat Riley lose their minds, why should we expect more from the players?

  • Nice recent run for Philly. If they could only play the Lakers every game they might be able to stay on top of the Eastern Conference.
  • Hank Luisetti: Thank you ... for everything ... for so many years.

  • I wish I had the courage, strength and fortitude to stand up the way David Halberstam does on a daily basis? Did you see his piece on Bear Bryant on ESPN.com's Page 2?

  • Name two things in life better than having your child graduate from college. It's cool, cute and fun to be known as Luke's dad. I wish I could keep it together when the band strikes up "Pomp and Circumstance."

  • I have a reason to believe: All four sons, healthy and home for Christmas.

    Good morning and Happy Holidays!
