Nets respond to coach's criticism

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Stephon Marbury had 33 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for his first career triple-double as the New Jersey Nets, after having their manhood challenged by their coach, beat the Chicago Bulls 123-103 Saturday night.

Marbury, in his fifth NBA season, achieved the triple-double with more than 7 1/2 minutes remaining when he fed Keith Van Horn for a driving layup. He had already grabbed his career-high 10th rebound one minute earlier.

It was New Jersey's first triple-double since Kendall Gill did it two seasons ago.

New Jersey won for the third time in four games one night after their coach, Byron Scott, compared them to women for the way they were pushed around in the first half of a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.

"That was just a comment I made after the game that I felt illustrated the way we played," Scott said.

Against the Bulls, there was no sign of the Nets being anything less than manly right from the start. Marbury had 13 points, four assists and four rebounds in the first quarter as the Nets, who never trailed and made 11 of their first 12 shots, opened a 37-24 lead.

The Bulls made a run to pull within one point before the Nets pulled away for a 67-57 halftime lead on 68 percent shooting.

Elton Brand had four of his 28 points as Chicago opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to pull to 91-85, but Johnny Newman scored on a reverse layup to start a 14-7 run that put the Nets back in control.

Marbury finished 12-for-22 from the field and 7-for-9 from the line, while Van Horn added 31 points and Newman and Aaron Williams added 16 each for the Nets, who reached the midpoint of the season with a record of 14-27 -- three games worse than their record at the halfway point of last season.

Ron Mercer added 22 and Ron Artest had 17 for Chicago. The Bulls lost their eighth in a row, one short of their season-high.

Notes:
Despite the loss, Bulls coach Tim Floyd maintained a winning record (5-4) against the Nets. He is 31-131 against everyone else. ... The Bulls dropped to 0-16 when trailing at the half on the road. ... Marbury reached 30 points for the 11th time this season. ... Kenyon Martin sat out with the flu. He was the only player to start all of New Jersey's first 40 games.
