Magic beat Jazz at their own game

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- With a perfect pick-and-roll play, the Orlando Magic beat the Utah Jazz at their own game.

Darrell Armstrong hooked up with reserve Pat Garrity on the play, with Garrity hitting the winning 3-pointer with 38.5 seconds left as the Magic beat the Jazz 104-102 on Monday night.

"We were just looking to get a shot there and Darrell and I tried to play pick and roll," Garrity said. "When I got it, I saw Jeff Hornacek was guarding me. I thought I could get it over him, so I took it.

"I never thought of myself as that kind of player (clutch shooter). If I'm developing into that type of player, then fine."

Garrity made a layup and free throw to give Orlando a 100-97 lead, but Utah's Karl Malone had a basket and Hornacek added a 3-pointer to give the Jazz a 102-100 lead with 1:30 remaining.

After Garrity's 3-pointer put Orlando back in front, Malone missed a jump shot and Garrity was fouled. He missed both free throws, but Orlando's Monty Williams got the rebound and was fouled. He made one of two attempts to finish the scoring.

"I told Garrity I didn't worry about the free throws because Monty got the ball back and it took up time," Magic coach Doc Rivers said.

Malone made a basket on Utah's final possession, but the officials ruled that it came after the game ended.

"It looked good to me," Hornacek said. "The one ref said, 'it looked good to me but I can't overrule it.' When one referee sees it, they should just figure it out from there."

Malone led the Jazz with 29 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. John Stockton had 15 points, and Hornacek and Howard Eisley each had 13.

Williams and Tariq Abdul-Wahad added 14 each for the Magic.

Utah led 66-59 with 8:12 remaining in the third quarter, but the Magic used a 7-0 run to tie it at 66.

"You don't deserve to win when you turn over the basketball 21 times," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "You have to give the Magic credit. It's fun to watch someone who wants to play basketball."
