SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- A sizzling third quarter carried the San Antonio Spurs to their sixth straight victory.

Tim Duncan scored 28 points and San Antonio made 11 straight shots in a 40-point third quarter to beat the Detroit Pistons 106-87 Tuesday night.

"This will really build our confidence. We know we are the world champs, now we're starting to play like the world champs," said San Antonio guard Mario Elie.

The Spurs led by only one point at halftime, but hit 16 of 19 shots in the third quarter while outscoring the Pistons 40-17.

Avery Johnson scored 22 points for San Antonio, which won its 21st straight regular-season game in the Alamodome.

"I would say that we would have to play almost a perfect game to beat this team," said Detroit coach Alvin Gentry, a former Spurs assistant. "We missed a couple of open looks to start the second half and it was off the races."

The Spurs, who shot a season-best 59.2 percent from the field, scored on 15 straight possessions before Jaren Jackson was called for an offensive foul with 1:35 left in the third period.

Johnson was 11-of-14 from the field and Duncan was 10-of-14.

Grant Hill, who scored 23 of his 30 points in the first half, was the only Detroit player in double figures.

All-Star center David Robinson returned to the San Antonio lineup after missing Saturday's game against Denver with cervical spasms that caused pain in his right arm and shoulder. He had 11 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes before taking a seat for good with 3:39 left in the third quarter.

The Pistons led much of the first half before the Spurs began to find the range toward the end of the second period. San Antonio took a 47-46 lead on Duncan's follow shot at the halftime buzzer.

Terry Porter scored 11 of his 13 points for the Spurs in the first half.
