CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Eddie Jones scored 31 points, including the go-ahead basket with 86 seconds left in overtime, and the Charlotte Hornets defeated the Boston Celtics 120-117 on Tuesday night.

Jones added five rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks as the Hornets defeated the Celtics for the second time in the exhibition season. His 20-footer from the top of the key gave the Hornets a 116-114 lead after five lead changes and three ties in the extra period.

Charlotte also got 23 points from Bobby Phills and 19 points and 13 rebounds from Anthony Mason.

Hornets guard Baron Davis, the third overall pick in the 1999 draft, got his most extensive action of the exhibition season, playing 27 minutes. Davis had nine points, four rebounds and three assists but missed a 3-pointer that would have won it at the end of regulation. He also walked the ball up the floor too slowly with less than three minutes left in overtime and Charlotte up by a point, resulting in a 10-second violation.

The Celtics, repeatedly running fast breaks on a team that was playing its fifth game in seven days, ended up with 58 points inside.

Paul Pierce scored 13 of his 27 points in the final 17 minutes to lead Boston. Antoine Walker added 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams learned that they are losing role players for extended periods because of injuries. Charlotte reserve guard Ricky Davis, a 1998 first-round draft pick, is to undergo surgery Thursday for torn knee cartilage and will miss 6-16 weeks. Boston forward Danny Fortson, being counted on for rebounding help, will be sidelined 8-12 weeks with a stress fracture in his right foot.

Boston guard Kenny Anderson needed four stitches in his upper lip after getting hit in the face in the third quarter. He did not return.
