AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ Anthony Parker scored 12 points and Corey Maggette and Chris Gatling added 11 each as the Orlando Magic beat the Detroit Pistons 99-91 Tuesday night in a foul-filled exhibition game.

The game had 47 turnovers, 83 free throws and 83 fouls, as both teams struggled to adjust to the new rules limiting defensive contact.

Grant Hill led Detroit with 21 points, while Jerry Stackhouse added 18. They combined for 25 free throws in 32 attempts.

Detroit came into the game without a single halfcourt play, as coach Alvin Gentry wanted his team to focus on their new up-tempo style. But the Pistons defense was never able to force the missed shots and turnovers needed for fast-break success, leaving them looking lost when they had the ball.

Orlando took advantage right from the start, holding Detroit to 18 percent shooting in the first quarter en route to a 32-20 lead. The Pistons scored 14 of their 20 points from the line, as the Magic were called for 14 fouls in 12 minutes.

The Magic took a 65-42 halftime lead, but Detroit outscored the Magic 27-20 in the third quarter. With all the starters seemingly done for the night, Detroit's reserves got it back in the game, and Loy Vaught's jumper pulled the Pistons within 87-75 with 10:17 left.

Orlando coach Doc Rivers put three starters back in the game, but Detroit kept chipping at the lead with several players who probably won't survive the first cuts.

But the Magic finally held on, despite scoring just 14 fourth-quarter points.
