Scouting Report
2000 Season Righthander Steve Rain, who was hit frighteningly hard in a brief trial in 1999, fared better last summer. He was called up in mid-June and pitched well in middle relief for six weeks. He tailed off in August and September, but finished with decent numbers.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting To be effective, Rain must get hitters to chase his slider. When his command is off, he has only an average fastball and changeup to fall back on. He's quite hittable, so painting the corners is how he must get by. He had better success against lefties last year, something he rarely accomplished in the minors. A big man at 6-foot-6, he's not very mobile in the field, although he keeps his mistakes to a minimum and cuts off the running game well. He has virtually no experience at the plate.
2001 Outlook In the minors, Rain has been very effective at times, but he has been wildly inconsistent overall. He could come into camp, pitch well and land a setup job or just as easily he could bomb out and earn a return trip to Triple-A.
