Scouting Report

1999 Season
Kevin Orie opened the year as the Marlins' starting third baseman, thanks in part to rival Mike Lowell's testicular cancer. Orie started fast, batting .324 in the opening month. But then a pulled groin landed him on the disabled list in late May, and he was slowed by quadriceps and wrist injuries the rest of the summer.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
When he's on, Orie has gap power. On the downside, he gets jammed far too easily and chases balls just off the plate. He has a sweeping swing that leaves him susceptible to offspeed pitches. Scouts ripped Orie for his poor instincts on the bases and at third base, and cited a general sluggishness in his play. Orie made a number of routine errors and failed to turn in the surprise plays he had in a two-month audition the previous year. His speed is below average.

2000 Outlook
Lowell won Florida's third-base job, so the Marlins traded Orie to the Dodgers in November for a player to be named. Los Angeles may lose Adrian Beltre to free agency, in which case Orie would be a stopgap starter.
