Scouting Report
1999 Season Brant Brown entered the season as Pittsburgh's starting center fielder after arriving from the Cubs in an offseason trade for Jon Lieber. With a bad start offensively and looking very shaky defensively, Brown lost his job in mid-May. With the exile of Jose Guillen to Tampa Bay, Brown started more games in right field than any other Pirate.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Despite his subpar 1999, Brown has some offensive skills. He has decent pop and could hit 20-25 home runs if he received 500 at-bats in a season, though his lack of success against lefties likely would preclude that much playing time. Brown has hit for a high average throughout much of his professional career, though that changed last season when he lost all concept of the strike zone. Brown has decent speed but doesn't steal bases. He's not a good defensive outfielder, as he plays too deep and has a below-average arm. Brown is solid at first base, his natural position.
2000 Outlook Brown didn't fit in with the Pirates, who traded him to the Marlins for Bruce Aven in December. Aven will assume the fourth-outfielder role in which Pittsburgh found Brown lacking. Florida will play Brown in the outfield and first base.
