Scouting Report
1999 Season Cyberspace wasn't kind to Mike Munoz. The lefty reliever helped Texas win the American League West but wasn't available for the playoffs after dropping a computer monitor on his right foot. It was a disappointing end to a solid season for Munoz, whose 3.93 ERA was his lowest since 1994.
Pitching & Defense Munoz is a lefty specialist who spots an underwhelming fastball and a changeup to keep hitters off balance. He throws the change a lot against righthanders, and held them to a .235 batting average in 1999. Though he worked 3.1 innings in one outing last year, there are questions about his durability. Munoz is an above-average fielder who isn't afraid to cut down the lead runner. He holds runners well.
2000 Outlook Munoz became a free agent and re-signed with Texas for one year and $750,000, plus a club option for 2001. The preliminary plan is to have him work alongside fellow southpaws Mike Venafro and Matt Perisho in a bullpen built around righthanded fireballers.
