Scouting Report
1999 Season News flash: Jaime Navarro did not have the highest ERA in the American League last year for the first time in three seasons. But the round mound of getting taken downtown nevertheless got bounced out of the White Sox rotation for the second year in a row. His one lasting value has been as an innings-eater, but that total dropped for the third year in a row.
Pitching & Defense Navarro's strength remains a two-seam fastball. But his inability to throw other pitches for strikes, a characteristic that often has him barking at umpires, creates too many fastball counts. His lack of quality offspeed stuff gets him pounded by lefthanders and gives him trouble putting hitters away. Navarro doesn't help himself in the field and does a terrible job holding runners on base.
2000 Outlook The White Sox would have dumped Navarro long ago if anyone wanted him. This is the last year of the foolish four-year, $20 million contract that GM Ron Schueler gave him, and manager Jerry Manuel has no plans to use Navarro as a starter if Schueler can't move him in a garbage-for-garbage trade.
