Scouting Report
1999 Season After signing with Detroit as a free agent, Gregg Jefferies had a nightmare season. A lifetime .289 hitter, Jefferies literally had trouble getting the ball out of the infield. He made the weak groundout his own personal art form.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense In the past, Jefferies made consistent contact and was a tough out in the defining moments that decide ballgames. He was none of the above in 1999. He had trouble hitting any type of pitching, his bat was slow and he looked totally bewildered at the plate. There was a time when Jefferies ran well, but he didn't look as quick last season. Used almost exclusively as a DH by Detroit, he's an awkward outfielder who doesn't get good jumps on balls and has a well below-average arm.
2000 Outlook Is Jefferies washed up at age 32? He certainly looked like it last season. He's due to make $6 million this year, and it's a lock that Detroit won't pick up his option for 2001. If he has another season like 1999, he could be out of baseball faster than anyone possibly could have expected.
