Made his first start since 1993 on May 29 at New York ... On the disabled list from May 15-July 13 with elbow soreness ... Rehabbed at Arkansas and Louisville between June 28 and July 14 ... Led the Cardinals in strikeouts (82) and home runs allowed.

Missed the entire season recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

1993
Second full season in the majors ... Had no-decisions in his first four starts and had no-decisions in nine of his first 26 starts of the season ... Recorded the lowest ERA (3.76) among St. Louis starters and finished third on the club in wins with 10 ... Compiled a six-game winning streak from June 14 to July 19 ... St. Louis won in nine of his starts between May 28 and July 19 ... Limited opposing batters to a .205 average ... Went 7-3 with a 2.50 ERA at home ... Did not play for the final month of the season after suffering tendinitis in his left shoulder and underwent surgery to repair his injured shoulder in December.

Retired 24 straight batters in his May 29 start vs. San Diego, but did not earn a decision in the game ... Compiled a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings between June 27 and July 7 ... Was 7-5 with a 3.19 ERA at the All-Star break ... Was moved to the bullpen after a brief slump and made five relief appearances, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA out of the pen ... Returned to the rotation Aug. 16 and went 3-3 with a 3.78 ERA in nine starts ... Won his 10th decision of the year in his Sept. 1 start vs. the Padres ... Walked just 38 batters in 179 innings, making him one of three Cardinal pitchers to finish in the top-10 among NL pitchers in fewest walks allowed per nine innings ... Posted a 0.50 ERA in three starts vs. the Mets and was 3-0 vs. San Francisco ... Collected his first major league hit with a single April 27 at Los Angeles ... Was named to Baseball Digest's All-Rookie team.
