Tejera latest injured Marlin pitcher

Associated Press

Florida Marlins: The Marlins lost another starting pitcher to an injury when left-hander Michael Tejera left Saturday night's game early with a sprained right Achilles' and lower back discomfort.

The Marlins already have three pitchers on the DL. A.J. Burnett recently had Tommy John surgery and is expected to be out 12-to-18 months. Mark Redman is out with a broken left thumb, and Josh Beckett sprained his right elbow on Wednesday.

Tejera was hurt while running out a grounder in the third inning. He tripped over the bag after hitting into a double play and landed awkwardly. Tejera went to the mound for the next inning and threw two warmup pitches, but left and was replaced by Toby Borland.

Tejera is probable for his next start, scheduled for Friday against the Dodgers.

New York Yankees: Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the eighth inning Saturday night to lead Trenton to a 6-4 victory over New Haven in his next-to-last game on a rehab assignment.

Jeter's bases-loaded double off Kevin Frederick with two outs in the eighth gave Trenton a 6-4 lead and delighted a Thunder record crowd of 8,729.

It was Jeter's first extra-base hit with Trenton, the Yankees Double-A affiliate. The Thunder are 4-0 with Jeter in the lineup.

Jeter is scheduled to come off the disabled list and be in the starting lineup Tuesday when the Yankees begin a homestand against Anaheim.

The five-time All-Star shortstop has been out since March 31, when he dislocated his left shoulder sliding into Toronto catcher Ken Huckaby.

Saturday night marked the first time during his rehab stint that Jeter played nine innings, and he is scheduled to do so again Sunday.

Oakland A's: Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez left Saturday's game against the New York Yankees in the top of the seventh inning after getting struck on the left hand by Jorge Posada's line drive.

X-rays were negative, although Chavez is doubtful for Sunday.

Chavez dived to his right in an attempt to field Posada's drive but the ball struck the exposed part of his hand just above the glove and bounced into the Athletics' bullpen for a double.

"Sometimes a ball like that can get on you before you can even move,'' A's manager Ken Macha said. "That ball was probably traveling at a pretty good rate.''

Chavez grimaced in pain and stayed on the ground for several moments. He was replaced at third base by Jason Grabowski.

"With that much pain that quick you assume the worst,'' A's trainer Larry Davis said. "I think we all thought it was broken but the X-rays proved us all wrong.''

Chavez is day to day.

Boston Red Sox: Boston's Pedro Martinez, bothered by a sore right groin, will make his next scheduled start for the Red Sox against Texas on Thursday.

Martinez, who allowed five runs and eight hits in a 5-0 loss at Minnesota on Friday, felt pain in his groin while warming up for the fourth inning. Still, he pitched the fourth and the fifth innings before coming out of the game.

"He's a little sore,'' spokesman Kevin Shea said. "But, he rode the bike for close to an hour today.

"He will make his next start,'' Shea said.

Martinez (3-2), who did not comment on the injury, has an ERA of 3.15 this year. The right-hander entered the season with a career 2.62 ERA.

"Hopefully it will be nothing serious, but we'll see,'' manager Grady Little said before Saturday's game at Minnesota.

Little said he was happy to see Martinez smiling in the clubhouse after Friday's game.

"We'll have our biggest relief if he's doing some of that today,'' Little said.

The Red Sox have lost four of seven.

Cleveland Indians: Cleveland rookie first baseman Travis Hafner has a broken big left toe, but isn't expected to be out of the lineup long.

"We're hoping he will be able to play through it when the swelling goes down,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said Saturday.

Hafner, a North Dakota native, took batting practice before Saturday night's game at Texas, and Wedge indicated he could play again as early as Sunday.

Hafner was hit by a pitch thrown by Texas' John Thomson in the second inning Friday night. He then had a single and scored in the third inning before coming out of the game.

X-rays revealed a hairline fracture.

Hafner, traded to Cleveland by Texas during the offseason, had a similar injury while in the minors with the Rangers. He believes getting hit by the pitch might have brought a recurrence of the old injury, and he plans to play through it.

"It's a matter of playing with the pain,'' Hafner said. "I was going to get back out there whether it was broken or not.''

Shane Spencer started at first base Saturday night.
