Dodger right-hander expected to make next start

Associated Press

Los Angeles Dodgers: With an MRI exam on Darren Dreifort's right knee Monday revealing no damage, the right-hander is expected to make his next start Saturday at Montreal, team spokesman John Olguin said.

Dreifort (2-3) said he tweaked his knee in the sixth inning of Saturday night's 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He came out after the sixth, having allowed four hits and one run to earn his second victory and lower his ERA to 3.41.

Dreifort missed half of the 2001 season and all of last year following reconstructive surgery on his right elbow in July 2001. He also had surgery on his right knee last August, but said the current pain in his knee was not in the area of last year's surgery.

New York Yankees: Shortstop Derek Jeter took batting practice on the field for the first time since dislocating his left shoulder on Opening Day and expects to begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday.

Jeter, hurt in a collision March 31, took three rounds of 20 swings Monday. He also continued a throwing program, taking grounders at short and running the bases.

"Everyday is a big step," Jeter said. "Today's probably the biggest one. Getting an opportunity to swing on the field, see how you feel and get a little more into the swings."

Jeter could rejoin the Yankees by May 13. He is scheduled to take batting practice again Tuesday at the team's player development center.

Jeter could begin his minor league stint at Double-A Trenton or Class-A Tampa. Both clubs are home Wednesday as part of long homestands.

Chicago Cubs: Closer Antonio Alfonseca was activated from the disabled list, and the Cubs designated pitcher Alan Benes for assignment.

Alfonseca began the season on the DL with a strained right hamstring, which he injured in spring training. He made three appearances for Triple-A Iowa in a minor league rehab assignment, allowing two runs in 3 2/3 innings.

It may be awhile before he returns to closing duties.

Reliever Joe Borowski entered Monday 5-for-5 in save opportunities with a 1.69 ERA. Cubs manager Dusty Baker has said he plans to ease Alfonseca back into the closer's role.

Benes pitched in three games for the Cubs this season with a save and a 2.16 ERA. He was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on April 16 to take the roster spot of the injured Dave Veres.

Texas Rangers: Right-hander Jamey Wright agreed to a minor league contract, and the team announced that third baseman Herbert Perry is set to begin another rehabilitation assignment.

Perry has been on the DL all season with right shoulder and left knee problems. He will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Frisco, the team for which he played six games from April 3-10 before straining his left oblique muscle and returning to the DL.

Wright, 28, is expected to join Triple-A Oklahoma later this week. He was 1-3 with a 7.36 ERA in seven games (four starts) for Indianapolis in Milwaukee's organization before being released last week.

Baltimore Orioles: Playing in miserable weather and facing the lowly Detroit Tigers, Monday night's game drew the smallest crowd in the 12-year history of Camden Yards.

An announced crowd of 17,267 watched the Orioles take on the Tigers, who brought a 4-25 record into the game but beat Baltimore 6-1. The actual attendance was much less, as only a few thousand fans gathered on a wet, chilly night.

The previous smallest crowd at Camden Yards was 18,017, on April 21 for a game against Tampa Bay.
