SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres have rescheduled six home games for the first week of October, including Tony Gwynn's final game on Oct. 7.
The games, against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies, were postponed following Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
The Padres will play the Dodgers Oct. 2-4 and the Rockies Oct. 5-7.
The Padres won't be able to use Qualcomm Stadium on Oct. 1 because the NFL's Chargers have a home game on Sept. 30 and it takes up to 36 hours to reconfigure the stadium for baseball.
The Padres will play an afternoon game against the Rockies on Oct. 6, and San Diego State's football game against Eastern Illinois will be played as scheduled that night. Stadium workers don't have to change as many seats for a San Diego State game as they do for a Chargers game.
Gwynn, who is retiring after 20 seasons with the Padres, will still be honored with a "Thanks Tony Weekend" Sept. 21-23. That series, against San Francisco, originally would have been his final series in San Diego.
Fans who bought tickets for the Sept. 23 game solely because they thought it would be Gwynn's last home game will be able to exchange or purchase tickets for Oct. 7, subject to availability, the team said. |
