Some ticket-buyers irate at switch

BALTIMORE -- Cal Ripken will close out his 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles at home on Oct. 6 in a game rescheduled to avoid a conflict with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.

The Orioles and Boston Red Sox will finish up at Camden Yards at 7:05 p.m. ET Saturday, Oct. 6. Other teams in the majors will end the regular season the next day.

The terrorist attacks in New York and Washington forced baseball to postpone a week's worth of games.

The Orioles were worried they would have to finish the season on Oct. 7, which would have created a potential traffic jam around Camden Yards because of the Ravens' game against the Tennessee Titans, scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

If forced to hold their finale that Sunday, the Orioles probably couldn't have started the game until 9 p.m.

Commissioner Bud Selig's office on Monday announced the Orioles' last seven games will be played Oct. 1-6.

Baltimore will play three games against Toronto on Oct. 1-3, then close out the season with a four-game series against the Red Sox, including a day-night doubleheader on Oct. 5. The last two games are sold out.

Although that problem was resolved, the Orioles are still receiving calls from irate fans who paid scalper's fees for this Sunday's game against the New York Yankees, which was originally scheduled to be Ripken's final home game.

Fans who were to attend the Sept. 16 game against the Red Sox now have the valued tickets to Ripken's finale.

"The tragic events of last week have put us in an unprecedented position. The situation is one that no one could anticipate," said Joe Foss, the Orioles' vice chairman and chief operating officer. "We have tried to make this rescheduling as fair and logical as possible."
