Big Unit tough-luck loser in Japan

Associated Press

NAGOYA, Japan -- Hisanori Takahashi of the Japan Series champion Yomiuri Giants and three relievers combined to give up only one hit and strike out 10 as Japan's All-Stars beat their major league counterparts 1-0 Thursday.

The only run came in the eighth inning, when Tatsuhiko Kinjo of the Yokohama BayStars hit an infield hit and scored on a double by Michihiro Ogasawara of the Nippon Ham Fighters off Javier Vazquez of the Montreal Expos.

The loss left the major leaguers 3-2-1 in the eight-game series.

Takahashi, 9-6 with a 3.18 ERA this season, held the Major Leaguers hitless and struck out seven in five innings.

Reliever Ryota Igarashi of the Yakult Swallows worked the next two innings, giving up only a single to Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth. Two other relievers finished up.

Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks gave up four hits and struck out seven -- five in a row -- through four innings.

Vazquez relieved Johnson in the fifth and held the Japanese hitless to the seventh.
