AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees vs. Tigers
New York: RHP Ramiro Mendoza (7-3, 3.72 ERA) will start
Thursday's series finale against the Tigers. ... Manager Joe Torre
said that RHP Orlando Hernandez (back injury) did some pregame
throwing Tuesday and will be reevaluated to see if he's available
to pitch this weekend at Tampa Bay. If not, Torre said "El Duque"
would go on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to his last start
June 18. ... SS Derek Jeter turned 26 on Monday with 887 career
hits. Mickey Mantle (1,080) and Joe DiMaggio (970) are the only
Yankees with more hits before their 26th birthdays. ... Tuesday's
game at Detroit started the third leg of a season-long 13-game,
four-city road trip. The Yankees were 3-4 in previous stops at
Boston and Chicago and will visit Tampa Bay this weekend. Detroit: 3B Dean Palmer was back in the Tigers lineup Tuesday
after missing a game with a sore groin. ... Juan Gonzalez was
slated to start in right field but was switched to DH shortly
before game time. ... LF Bobby Higginson and 1B Tony Clark are the
Tigers' first back-to-back AL player of the week award winners
since Kirk Gibson and Johnny Grubb in 1986. ... The three-game
series against the Yankees marks the Tigers' final homestand before
the All-Star break. The team doesn't return to Comerica Park until
July 13.
Orioles vs. Red Sox
Baltimore: Cal Ripken and Will Clark, in the midst of deep
slumps, batted seventh and eighth. Ripken was 2-for-26 in his
previous seven games, while Clark was 1-for-13 in his previous
four. ... Mike Mussina was trying to reverse the recent poor
performances of Baltimore's starting pitchers. In the last 12
games, the starters were 1-8 with an 8.39 ERA. ... Scott Erickson
is scheduled to pitch in Fenway Park even though there was no
resolution to rumors that the Red Sox might be interested in
trading for him. Erickson (3-5, 7.36 ERA) is scheduled to pitch in
Thursday's series finale against Tim Wakefield. Boston: The team that brought you the regular outfield of Jim
Rice, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evens from 1974 through 1980, had a
strange trio playing those positions Tuesday -- Brian Daubach, a
first baseman, made his first major-league start in left field.
Curtis Pride, recalled from Pawtucket on June 19, was in center,
and Jeff Frye, Boston's regular second baseman, in right. All four
outfielders on Boston's roster at the start of the season were
unavailable. Troy O'Leary and Trot Nixon are on the disabled list,
Darren Lewis has a hamstring injury and Carl Everett had a
root-canal procedure Tuesday. ... Nixon was placed on the disabled
list Tuesday with a hamstring injury. Designated hitter Morgan
Burkhart, who had 17 homers at Pawtucket before being recalled
Tuesday, singled in his first major league at-bat in the second
inning, and Mussina gave him the ball. ... Hipolito Pichardo,
outstanding as a long man in the bullpen, is scheduled to make his
first start this season Saturday at Chicago.
Blue Jays vs. Devil Rays
Toronto: RHP Joey Hamilton, on the disabled list all season
after undergoing shoulder surgery last September, is scheduled to
pitch a simulated game Thursday and make a minor league rehab start
next Tuesday ... OF Raul Mondesi, who didn't play Sunday because of
a strained left wrist, traveled to the Dominican Republic where an
older brother is ill. He will rejoin the team Wednesday ... SS Alex
Gonzalez was not in the lineup for the second straight game because
of a right groin strain. He was replaced by rookie Chris Woodward. Tampa Bay: Manager Larry Rothschild hoped to have sluggers Greg
Vaughn, Jose Canseco and Vinny Castilla back in the lineup by the
start of a weekend series against the Yankees, however that's not
likely. While Vaughn remains on schedule to return Friday from a
strained right hamstring, Canseco ran Sunday on the sore left heel
that has him on the DL and was not able to work out Tuesday.
Castilla, sidelined by a sore back, is eligible to be activated
Thursday but probably won't make a rehab start before next week.
... The Devil Rays batted .305 and scored 39 runs on the six-game
road trip that ended Sunday. Going into Tuesday night, the club hit
20 points higher on the road than at home (.279 to .259).
Indians vs. Royals
Cleveland: The Indians activated RHP Paul Shuey from the 15-day
disabled list and designated LHP Alan Newman for assignment. Shuey
was 3-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 17 games in 2000, before going on the
disabled list May 24 with a torn labrum in his right hip. He
underwent arthroscopic surgery on May 30. Newman allowed three
earned runs in 1 1-3 innings Monday in his only appearance of the
season for the Indians. ... Cleveland still has eight players on
the disabled list, including six pitchers. ... The Indians tied a
club record on Monday when they used their 26th pitcher of the
season (Newman). The major league record is 29, set in 1996 by the
Anaheim Angels. Kansas City: The Royals began a nine-game homestand on Tuesday,
with series against the Indians, Tigers and White Sox. The Royals
play 15 of 18 games at home. ... RHP Blake Stein, who has missed
the entire season to-date, pitched 5 1-3 innings for Triple-A Omaha
on Monday. He picked up the win after allowing one run on five
hits, walking two and striking out five. Kansas City Manager Tony
Muser said Stein would make "at least one more start" in Omaha,
but, "He's close." ... Carlos Febles, on the disabled list since
June 15 with a left shoulder strain, will begin his 20-day
rehabilitation assignment Wednesday. He is expected to play two
games with the Gulf Coast Royals (Rookie), three or four with
Double-A Wichita and the remainder with Omaha.
Twins vs. White Sox
Minnesota: Reliever Eddie Guardado pitched in five of seven
games on the Twins current road trip and manager Tom Kelly said the
left-hander was available Tuesday. "If you don't pitch him, he
gets too strong," Kelly said of Guardado, nicknamed "Everyday
Eddie" who has a 1.27 ERA with two saves in his last 26
appearances. ... Shortstop Cristian Guzman leads the majors with 12
triples and is on pace for 25. The Twins club record is 16 set by
Rod Carew in 1977. ... Twins CEO Chris Clouser made the trip to
Chicago to attend the series. ... Minnesota first-round draft pick
Adam Johnson will start Wednesday for the Fort Myers Miracle. Chicago: Herbert Perry will continue to start at third base as
long as he's swinging a hot bat, manager Jerry Manuel said. Perry
entered Tuesday's game batting .417 (10-for-24) in his last six
starts. Greg Norton was batting .216 (8-for-37) in 12 games. ...
Manuel said he is not worried about closer Keith Foulke, who gave
up six runs Sunday against the Yankees, three shy of his
season-total entering the game. "He throws a lot of strikes,"
Manuel said. "It's just a matter of his missing in the zone." ...
Gary Pettis, who stole 40 or more bases in five seasons and is now
a roving outfield instructor, joined the big league club Tuesday to
work with 2B Ray Durham, SS Jose Valentin and OF Chris Singleton,
among others.
Angels vs. Mariners
Anaheim: RHP Jason Dickson, who missed last season because of
surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, underwent
arthroscopic surgery on the same shoulder Tuesday. Additional
damage was found and Dickson, 27, will miss the remainder of the
season. His right shoulder capsule was tightened by Dr. Lewis Yokum
at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. Dickson was 2-2 with a
6.11 ERA in six starts before being sidelined May 15. Manager Mike
Scioscia said: "At least they found out what was wrong." Asked if
Dickson's second surgery in 15 months was career threatening,
Scioscia said: "I guess if you want to be pessimistic, but we're
optimistic that he's going to be able to come back." The Angels
said they expect Dickson to be ready for spring training 2001. Seattle: Manager Lou Piniella faces a dilemma this week. RHP
Freddy Garcia (fractured right tibia) is ready to come off the DL
after two rehabilitation starts for Class-A Everett, the second one
Monday night. RHP Paul Abbott, who is 4-2 with a 4.23 ERA in 18
games and 10 starts, would go back in the bullpen to make room for
Garcia, a 17-game winner as a rookie last season, in the rotation.
The Mariners could start him Saturday at Texas or use Garcia at
Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. The Mariners' dilemma is that Abbott
has been so effective as a starter. Abbott is 3-0 with a 2.03 in
five starts this month. Garcia was 2-1 with a 7.00 ERA in four
starts before being placed on the DL on April 16.
Rangers vs. Athletics
Texas: 2B Luis Alicea, who left Sunday's game in the third
inning with tightness in his lower back, received treatment Monday
but was not in the starting lineup Tuesday. He could return to
action as early as Wednesday. ... The Rangers announced a change in
their pitching rotation. RHP Esteban Loazia will replace LHP Kenny
Rogers on Thursday. Loazia's turn was originally skipped, but
Rogers balked at pitching on three days rest, despite a 19-3 career
record (15-0 in an A's uniform) in the Oakland Coliseum. ... RHP
John Wetteland, who had back spasms and missed Sunday's game, was
available on Tuesday. ... Texas and Oakland play each other six
times in nine days. Oakland: With 1B Jason Giambi leading the voting for the
All-Star game by just over 29,000 votes over Cleveland's Jim Thome,
A's manager Art Howe hopes the fans keep paying attention. "He
can't do anything more," said Howe. "He's been one of the hottest
guys in baseball. He's earned the right to make it as a starter and
not as a reserve." Giambi was hitting .343 with 21 homers and 73
RBIs entering play Tuesday. ... LHP Mike Magnante was activated
from the 15-day disabled list before the game. ... LHP Rich Sauveur
was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League to
make room for Magnante. "It's not because of a lack of
performance," said Howe. "It was just a roster situation that's
evolved." Sauveur has not pitched since June 18 at Kansas City.
... RHP Omar Olivares, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained
right shoulder, threw in the bullpen for the first time since his
injury. He's expected to return on July 17.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves vs. Expos
Atlanta: The Braves, who have completed their 13-game season
series with Philadelphia, are facing Montreal and New York for the
first time this season as they begin their current, and highly
anticipated, six-game road trip with a two-game set at Olympic
Stadium. ... Tuesday night starter Tom Glavine is 0-3 with a 4.39
ERA in his last six starts, despite allowing just six earned runs
in 22 innings over his last three starts. ... With a number of
national and New York-area reporters on hand in anticipation of the
Braves' upcoming four-game series at Shea Stadium, John Rocker
politely declined all interview requests prior to Tuesday night's
game. "If you would exit my locker space, I would greatly
appreciate it," Rocker said to reporters. Montreal: RHP Carl Pavano will likely miss his next start due to
tightness in his right triceps muscle. Pavano left his last start
Saturday night following the sixth inning due to tightness in the
muscle near his right elbow. ... 1B Lee Stevens needs two homers
for 100 in his career. ... RHP Mike Thurman will make his first
rehab start for Triple-A Ottawa Thursday night.

Chicago: Glenallen Hill, who wasn't in the starting lineup
Tuesday, has 12 career homers against the Pirates. ... With 66 RBIs
in the Cubs' first 74 games, Sammy Sosa is on pace for his sixth
consecutive 100-RBI season. ... Jon Lieber, the former Pirates
pitcher who starts Wednesday at Pittsburgh, hasn't won in his last
five starts. He allowed 12 hits and six runs in seven innings
Friday at Florida. ... Kevin Tapani, who starts Thursday, is 5-1
against Pittsburgh, losing only on May 5. He has won all three
career starts in Three Rivers Stadium. ... Henry Rodriguez hasn't
homered since May 27. Pittsburgh: Pirates GM Cam Bonifay says he is actively pursuing
a trade and made proposals to two clubs Tuesday. The Pirates are

... The three games against the Cubs are the Pirates' only at home
in a 16-game stretch between June 19 and July 6. ... C Jason
Kendall is the only Pirates player in the top eight at his position
in the NL All-Star balloting. He is second, but trails New York's
Mike Piazza by more than 900,000 votes. ... The Pirates' only hope
of getting close to .500 this season may come during the 12-game
stretch that began Tuesday and lasts until the All-Star break. All
12 games are against teams below .500: the Cubs (6), Phillies (3)
and Twins (3). ... OF Adrian Brown (strained hamstring) still isn't
ready to come off the disabled list.
Marlins vs. Mets
Florida: The Marlins' success in close games is a big reason for
their surprising start this season and flirtation with .500. They
are 15-11 in one run games, thanks in part to closer Antonio
Alfonseca, who leads the majors with 22 saves. "He has a good
fastball with great velocity and movement," manager John Boles
said. "He has a great disposition for a closer." ... 1B Derrek
Lee has homered in three straight games and has half of his 16 home
runs in the past 20 games. ... SS Alex Gonzalez sat out again with
a bruised right middle finger. New York: Manager Bobby Valentine is anxiously awaiting the
reaction to Atlanta closer John Rocker this week in his first trip
to the city since his offensive comments last December. "Either he
wasn't thinking or he's incapable of thinking," Valentine said.
"This has a chance to blow over and my faith in mankind and
baseball fans will be upheld, or that faith will be destroyed."
... Turk Wendell was prepared for Rocker's visit with a riot helmet
from the New York Police Department. ... C Mike Piazza and 3B Robin
Ventura didn't start. Ventura has a sore right shoulder and
Valentine wanted to give Piazza one day off this week. ... Pitching
coach Dave Wallace missed the game to attend a memorial service of
a close friend. Bullpen coach Al Jackson planned to spend the first
few innings in the dugout and John Franco would oversee the
bullpen. ... Reliever Rich Rodriguez, who has a 7.67 ERA, might be
asked to work out his problems in the minors.
Cardinals vs. Reds
St. Louis: Darryl Kile's start Tuesday came three days after
rain limited him to two scoreless innings against Los Angeles. ...
Heading into Tuesday's game, the Cardinals had not made an error
since June 18, a span of 69 innings. St. Louis leads the NL in
fielding, committing a league-low 40 errors. Cincinnati: The Reds decided that reliever Elmer Dessens will
start Wednesday against St. Louis, replacing demoted Rob Bell.
Dessens pitched four innings last Saturday for his first career
save. He hasn't started since September 1998. ... Pete Harnisch
will be activated off the disabled list and start Friday at
Arizona. ... The Reds signed third-round draft pick David Gil, a
right-hander from the University of Miami and RHP Ryan Mottle of
Clemson, a sixth-round pick.
Brewers vs. Phillies
Milwaukee: Wednesday's starter John Snyder (3-2) will attempt to
win his fourth straight decision. He is 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA over
his last four starts. ... The Brewers current seven-game road trip
is the longest of the season for the club. ... Tyler Houston, who
injured his left ankle in Sunday's game against Atlanta, was in the
starting lineup Tuesday. ... Pitcher Curtis Leskanic wears No. 00,
the third Brewer ever to don the number -- Jeffrey Leonard and
Franklin Stubbs were the others. ... After the series with the
Phillies, the Brewers will have just seven games left with National
League East opponents - four with Philadelphia and three with New
York. Philadelphia: 1B Rico Brogna, disabled since May 10 with a
fractured ulna bone on his left wrist, had the cast removed
Tuesday. He played catch and took several ground balls during
batting practice. His return is still two to four weeks away. ...

2-7 with a 6.16 ERA, is slated to start Wednesday. ... Ashby hasn't
won a game since May 7, a 7-4 victory against Atlanta. ... The
Phillies will play nine of 12 games at home before the All-Star
break.
Giants vs. Rockies
San Francisco: Jeff Kent's NL-leading 72 RBIs are the most in
the first half of a season by a Giants player since Kevin Mitchell
had 81 in 1989. ... OF Ellis Burks wants to return to the Giants
next season, and he's willing to take a pay cut to do it -- just
like he did when he played for Colorado. There has been speculation
that Burks, because of chronically sore knees, will be traded to an
American League team, where he would be used as a designated
hitter. Burks said he can't play more than five days a week,
adding, "I'll entertain the idea that I have to come back for the
same money or take a cut. To me, it's not all about money. I love
to play." ... The swelling has subsided on Kirk Rueter's right
leg, one day after being struck above the ankle by a line drive off
the bat of Neifi Perez. "It wasn't the first time Neifi hit me. He
got me twice a couple of years ago in spring training," Rueter
said. He will throw on the sideline between starts Wednesday and is
expected to make his next scheduled start Saturday against Los
Angeles. Colorado: Manager Buddy Bell kept Larry Walker out of Tuesday
night's game in order to give the outfielder's throwing elbow time
to heal. "He's still not completely pain free," Bell said. Bell
is hoping Tuesday's rest and another spell between now and the
All-Star break will help. Bell said the elbow is healing as
expected. "We've got to pick some spots for him so it will give
him a little bit of a blow," the manager said. ... LHP Mike Myers
has made 31 appearances this season and has yet to give up a run.
Myers usually is summoned to face one or two left-handed batters
and has compiled only 15 2-3 innings. Should he be considered for
the All-Star game? "It would be nice," Myers said, "but All-Star
games are for home runs, wins and saves. Would I like to go? Yeah.
Would I be upset if I didn't make it? Maybe." ... RHP Julio de
Paula, 20, pitched a no-hitter Monday for Single-A Asheville,
defeating Cape Fear 1-0. It was the seventh no-hitter thrown by the
