AMERICAN LEAGUE
Twins vs. Angels
Minnesota: Excluding the four expansion teams that entered the
majors after 1992, the only team the Twins have never made a trade
with is the Toronto Blue Jays, who entered the AL in 1977. But
their longest drought without a trade is with the Kansas City
Royals, who dealt Tom Burgmeier to Minnesota for Ken Gill on Oct.
27, 1973. ... The Twins hit back-to-back homers for the fourth time
this season when Matt Lawton and Ron Coomer went deep against
Anaheim's Jarrod Washburn in the third inning Monday. ... RF Midre
Cummings could have held Orlando Palmeiro's triple to a single in
Monday's victory, but instead chose to dive for a ball he had no
chance of catching with his team ahead 7-0. ... Ron Coomer has
committed only two errors at first base in 514 total chances. Anaheim: The Angels have not lost more than three consecutive
games this season. But they haven't won more than three in a row,
either -- which is a concern heading into a 10-game stretch against
AL West rivals Seattle (seven games) and Oakland (three) beginning
Tuesday night. ... Mo Vaughn, who has played all 75 games and is
tied with Darin Erstad for the team RBI lead with 57, isn't going
to get a day off from manager Mike Scioscia anytime soon. "Mo's
had some time DH-ing (five games)," Scioscia said. "He feels
that, for him, DH-ing is a day off because he feels like it gives
him that rest he needs. And he responds to that. Mo knows that
he'll get a day off sometime if things are going poorly, or if his
arms are tired or he's not swinging the bat to his capabilities.
So, until there's a situation where he can't function and can't
swing, I expect him to be in the lineup every day."
Tigers vs. Indians
Detroit: Tigers manager Phil Garner was still singing the
praises of the "Three Tenors" following their performance Sunday
night at Cleveland Browns Stadium. "It was great," said Garner,
who attended the concert along with his wife, Carol, and coaches
Bob Melvin and Doug Mansolino. "We got there at intermission and
got to see the encores. That was the best part." ... 3B Dean
Palmer was out of the lineup Monday night because of a strained
groin muscle he sustained in Sunday's game. "Running is when it
bugs me a little bit," said Palmer, who only expects to miss a
couple days. ... RHP Dave Mlicki said he still has headaches caused
by a severe sinus infection. Mlicki, scheduled to start Thursday
against the Yankees, made the three-hour drive back to Detroit
rather than risk flying and worsening his condition. Cleveland: RHP Charles Nagy, who had elbow surgery May 19, will
need to make at least two more minor league rehab starts before he
returns to the Indians. "We want to error on the side of caution
with Charlie," GM John Hart said. "There have been no setbacks.
The pain is diminished. He just doesn't have full strength back
yet." ... RHP Paul Shuey, who had hip surgery on May 30, is still
having pain in his hip and will continue to rehab at Double-A
Akron. Shuey has made two one-inning appearances for the Aeros. ...
Despite all the injuries to the pitching staff, Hart said he will
not bring up 19-year-old LHP C.C. Sabathia, the Indians' top
pitching prospect from Akron. "We want to bring him up when he's
ready," Hart said. "He's flown through our system, but is still
developing. Right now just isn't the time."
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Marlins vs. Mets
Florida: SS Alex Gonzalez, who made two errors as a defensive
replacement Sunday, has a bruised middle finger on his right hand
and is day-to-day. ... The Marlins have won 12 series already this
season after taking only 15 last season. ... 2B Luis Castillo
entered the game third in the NL in batting at .367, yet had only
three RBIs in 215 at-bats. One reason is his .162 average with
runners in scoring position. New York: The Mets aren't looking ahead yet to their four-game
showdown with Atlanta despite all of the attention focused on the
NLCS rematch and John Rocker's return to New York. Reporters from
the three major cable sports news channels were on hand asking
players about the series that begins Thursday. "We have a big
series with the Marlins. We'll worry about the Braves when they get
here," Mike Piazza said. ... SS Rey Ordonez underwent successful
surgery to put a plate into his broken left forearm and conduct a
bone graft. Melvin Mora has as many RBIs (9) in the four weeks
since Ordonez's injury as Ordonez had in the first two months of
the season. ... OF Darryl Hamilton, out since the first week of the
season with a sprained left foot, took BP in Florida and is
expected to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday.
Cardinals vs. Reds
St. Louis: Disabled 3B Fernando Tatis (groin) and RHP Dave
Wainhouse (shoulder) were sent to Triple-A Memphis on injury rehab
assignments. ... RHP John Ambrose was optioned to Double-A
Arkansas, and RHP Mark Thompson was recalled from Memphis. ... The
Cardinals shuffled their pitching plans for the four-game series
against Cincinnati. Darryl Kile, who pitched only two innings in a
rain-delayed game Saturday, will start Tuesday. ... The Cardinals'
8½-game lead over second-place Cincinnati was their biggest since
they were 9½ up in the NL East on July 23, 1987. Cincinnati: The Reds called up reliever Scott Winchester from
Triple-A Louisville to fill the roster spot of starter Rob Bell,
who was optioned down Sunday. ... To try to snap out of their
losing streak, some of the Reds decided to wear their pants legs
high -- pulled up just below the knee. ... With Pokey Reese slowed
by a sprained ankle and Chris Stynes limited by a pulled hamstring,
manager Jack McKeon let Barry Larkin bat leadoff Monday for the
first time since July 3, 1996 at St. Louis.
Giants vs. Rockies
San Francisco: Left-hander Shawn Estes, scheduled to start
Tuesday night's game, leads the majors in run support at 7.0 per
game (84 runs in 12 starts). Estes is the first major leaguer since
1987 to receive 18 runs of support in two starts in the same
season. ... The Giants and Rockies began a span of eight meetings
in 11 days, but they won't meet again this season. After a
four-game series in Colorado, the teams meet again for a four-game
series July 4-6 in San Francisco, including a day-night
doubleheader July 4. "I don't understand why we don't play them
again after July 6," Giants manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm amazed
that none of us has played an equal number of games within our
division. We haven't played San Diego yet. Colorado hasn't played
San Diego or the Dodgers yet. It's a weird schedule. You would like
to play a division team every day in September. It makes for a
better race." ... Barry Bonds' 27 home runs are the most by a
Giants player before the All-Star break since Matt Williams'
club-record 33 in 1994. Colorado: The Rockies' experiment of having OF Jeffrey Hammonds
bat in the cleanup spot lasted just one game. Hammonds and Jeff
Cirillo switched spots Sunday night in Arizona, but Cirillo was
back at No. 4 and Hammonds at No. 6 for Monday night's game against
San Francisco. ... Colorado already matched its 70 steals for the
entire 1999 season. ... Closer Jerry Dipoto, who had surgery for a
bulging disk in his neck May 3, began throwing Monday.
