Piazza leads with million-plus votes

NEW YORK -- San Francisco's Barry Bonds moved past Chicago's Sammy Sosa back into second place among National League outfielders in voting for next month's All-Star Game.

New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza, a seven-time All-Star who has started the past six games, was the top NL vote-getter, with 1,016,757 in totals announced Monday. Pittsburgh's Jason Kendall was a distant second among catchers with 278,903.

Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds, a 10-time All-Star for Seattle before February's trade, topped NL outfielders with 844,339, followed by Bonds (693,858), Sosa (662,644), Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero (621,362), St. Louis' Jim Edmonds (578,677) and Arizona's Steve Finley (239,255).

In last week's totals, Sosa was second to Griffey, 13,618 ahead of Bonds.

Mark McGwire of the Cardinals led at first base with 835,738, followed by Atlanta's Andres Galarraga (417,624).

Houston's Craig Biggio (387,194) maintained his lead at second base, followed by New York's Edgardo Alfonzo (310,175).

Cincinnati's Barry Larkin (584,954) kept his comfortable lead at shortstop, with Rey Ordonez of the New York Mets, who is injured, second with 366,914.

Atlanta's Chipper Jones led third basemen with 575,822, more than double the No. 2 vote-getter, Robin Ventura of the Mets (266,876).

Updated AL vote totals will be released Tuesday, and voting continues through June 27 at ballparks and July 1 on the Internet.

Starters for the July 11 game at Atlanta's Turner Field will be announced July 4, with reserves picked the following day.
