Who votes for the Players Choice Awards?

In keeping with the spirit of this election year, major league players cast their votes Sept. 16 for the 2000 Players Choice Awards. Since 1992, every player in the Major League Baseball Players Association has cast a vote on various categories to determine each year's winners.

This year, the players voted for the best pitcher, rookie, player and comeback player in each league as well as the overall Player of the Year and Man of the Year selected for on-field performance and off-field contributions to his community.

The balloting procedure was conducted under the supervision of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm. Following the balloting, Arthur Andersen representatives tabulated the results and three finalists for each award were announced. The winners will be revealed for the first time when ESPN broadcasts the 2000 Players Choice Awards from the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas at 9 p.m. ET Nov. 3.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez, sure to receive consideration for AL Pitcher of the Year, is looking to extend his record Award total to five. In 1999, Martinez captured the AL Pitcher of the Year Award and the overall Player of the Year Award, to go along with two previous Pitcher of the Year Awards.

The 2000 Man of the Year Award will go to one of six outstanding players selected by fans during an online poll to determine the nominees to be placed on the players' ballot. Leading the way for this prestigious award is Frank Thomas of the White Sox. Other nominees for Man of the Year are Derek Jeter of the Yankees, Jeff Kent of the Giants, Turk Wendell of the Mets, Eric Davis of the Cardinals and Gary Sheffield of the Dodgers.

In 1999, Sammy Sosa was the Players Choice Man of the Year for his on-field leadership and commitment to charities in Chicago and his native Dominican Republic.

Proceeds from the Players Choice Awards will benefit the Players Trust for Children, which will make a financial contribution to each winner's child-related charity of choice.
