TUESDAY'S TIDBITS
|
Line of the Day
Jason LaRue LaRue hit a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the eighth for his second 4-RBI game of July. |
|
Hero of the day Mark Grace, whose eighth-inning, two-roun double broke a tie at 3 and helped give the Diamondbacks a 5-3 victory over the Giants. Grace wasn't expecting to hit, thinking manager Bob Brenly might pinch-hit Greg Colbrunn against San Francisco lefty Aaron Fultz.
Goat of the day Hideo Nomo, whose throwing error led to Edgar Renteria scoring the go-ahead run in the Cardinals' 9-2 win over the Dodgers.
Injury report
Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick, who will be out for at least a month with a hairline fracture of his right kneecap.
Devil Rays RHP Ryan Rupe (right knee tendinitis) was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Streak of the day
Athletics starter Mark Mulder (11-5) gave up one run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings in Oakland's 2-1 win over Tampa Bay. In his last 10 outings, he has allowed only 16 earned runs in 72 1-3 innings, and he has won all five career starts against the Devil Rays.
Stat of the day Mariners starter Joel Pineiro (10-4), who allowed six runs and six hits in six innings. He came in 6-0 with a 1.14 ERA in his previous six starts, but against Baltimore this year he's 0-1 with a 10.64 ERA.
The last word
"It's one thing to repair a clogged artery (in a living organism) but it's a very different thing to say I'm going to take this soupy glop and turn it into an 83-year-old retired baseball player." -- Arthur Caplan, directory of the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Bioethics, on his skepticism when it comes to reviving the frozen dead.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Mariners at Orioles
Seattle: RHP Joel Pineiro's six-game winning streak ended
Tuesday, and his streak of 20 straight scoreless innings was
snapped in the first inning. ... Pineiro has a 10.64 ERA in two
starts against Baltimore and a 1.92 ERA against all other teams.
... OF Ichiro Suzuki collected his 37th infield hit. He leads the
majors with 134 overall. ... The Mariners had been caught stealing
seven straight times until Mike Cameron's fourth-inning steal. ...
SS Carlos Guillen is day-to-day with a knee bruise suffered in a
collision while tagging out Baltimore's Mike Bordick at second base
Monday. ... RHP Ryan Franklin, who allowed six runs in 3 1-3
innings Monday, will get another start Saturday in Anaheim. Beyond
that, Manager Lou Piniella is uncertain of the right-hander's
status in the rotation.
Baltimore: SS Mike Bordick sustained a hairline fracture of his
right kneecap when he was tagged out by Seattle's Carlos Guillen at
second base Monday. Bordick was placed on the 15-day disabled list
and his knee will be immobilized for three weeks. ... DH Howie
Clark doubled in his first major league at-bat Tuesday. ... RHP
Scott Erickson, who hadn't won since April 28 at Kansas City,
snapped a 13-start winless streak against Seattle. The Orioles
scored six runs for Erickson after scoring just 39 runs during his
13-game drought. ... OF Marty Cordova has four hits in the last two
games and is batting .366 (15-for-41) in July. Tuesday's homer was
the 99th of his career. ... Tony Batista is the only Oriole to start every game this season.
Angels at Twins
Anaheim: CF Darin Erstad had an infected blood blister in his
foot drained at a Minneapolis hospital Tuesday. Erstad, already
scheduled to have the day off, is 1-for-20 since the All-Star
break. ... Garret Anderson's homer Tuesday was Anaheim's first in a
span of 31 innings. ... After splitting a two-game series with the
first-place Twins, Anaheim begins a make-or-break 18-game stretch
against the rest of the AL best -- Seattle, Oakland, New York and
Boston. "We want our focus to be on us playing the absolute best
baseball we can,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. "We're not looking
at other clubs. We're not looking anywhere but here.'' Said starter
Jarrod Washburn, who won his 11th straight decision Tuesday:
"We'll start playing some tough teams and we'll see what we're
made of.'' ... The 11 wins for Washburn match a career high. ...
With three relievers -- Troy Percival, Dennis Cook and Al Levine --
on the DL, the Angels have only two pitchers in the bullpen who
began the season there: Lou Pote and Ben Weber. The injuries have
put Scot Shields into a more-crucial role. He pitched two perfect
innings against the Twins Tuesday.
Minnesota: The Twins took the season series from Anaheim 5-4.
... Minnesota's 10-game lead in the AL Central over the Chicago
White Sox entering Thursday's game was its first double-digit
margin since 1991. The biggest lead in team history was 11 games on
Sept. 24, 1969. ... The Twins are going to be the last team to feel
sorry for the Angels, who played the two-game series minus three
top relievers including closer Troy Percival -- who has never
allowed an earned run against the Twins in 35 career innings. "You
never like to see a guy get hurt,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said.
"But if he's going to, it may as well be for the two-game series
here. We've been through it, when we can't run out the guys we
want.'' ... SS Cristian Guzman, in his fourth season in the majors,
has only 25 career home runs, but he's homered in consecutive games
three times. ... RHP Brad Radke, who's pitched only two innings
since May 8 because of a pulled groin, flew to Fort Myers, Fla.,
Tuesday to begin a minor league rehab assignment. ... Eddie
Guardado's 29 saves are the most by a Twin since Rick Aguilera
finished the 1998 season with 38.
Red Sox at Tigers
Boston: Manager Grady Little was relieved when the Red Sox ended
their second four-game losing streak of the season with their 9-4
win over Detroit. "What we've been going through is something all
clubs go through,'' Little said. "There's some teams at the top of
some divisions that are going through what we are now. The key to
success is to go through these things the least amount of times.''
... The Tigers did something that would normally seem foolish: they
walked Johnny Damon to load the bases and face Nomar Garciaparra in
the seventh inning with the score tied at 4. Garciaparra grounded
out to end the inning. Garciaparra was 1-for-6 and is 3-for-24 on
this road trip.
Detroit: After recent reports indicated the Tigers were having
financial problems, the players mockingly cheered when their checks
arrived on Monday. However, Wendell Magee continued to wonder why
the Tigers do not provide their players with a direct-deposit
option for their paychecks. "I don't know for sure, but I don't
think there's more than two teams in all of baseball that don't
have direct deposit for their players,'' Magee said. ... Although
knuckleballer Steve Sparks didn't factor in Tuesday's decision, C
Brandon Inge was pleased to see Sparks gave up just three runs over
6 1-3 innings. Sparks (4-9) has won just one of his last seven
starts and has been a disappointment after going 14-9 last season.
"It was just one bad pitch to Manny (Ramirez) in the seventh that
allowed them to get back in the game,'' Inge said. "Other than
that, Sparks was great. It's good to see him pitch that way after
some bad first-half starts.''
Yankees at Blue Jays
New York: Major league disciplinarian Bob Watson talked with
manager Joe Torre, who was ejected from Monday's game after Orlando
Hernandez hit Carlos Delgado with a pitch. Three pitches before
hitting Delgado, Hernandez threw a pitch behind Delgado, prompting
a warning from the umpire. Hernandez threw at Delgado because
Toronto's Steve Parris hit Widger earlier in the game. Managers are
ejected and issued a fined if something happens after a warning.
Torre received an automatic $500 fine. Watson is reviewing the tape
of the pitch. "Beyond being fined, he's going to look at the tape
and make a determination,'' Torre said. ... Torre sat OF Rondell
White for the second straight game because of SkyDome's Astroturf.
... team a day after his wife game birth to a daughter, Paulina.
Toronto: 1B Carlos Delgado, who has tendinitis in his left knee,
wa the DH for the first since Sept. 12, 1999. "I don't think it's
that bad,'' Delgado said. "It just kind of flares up here and
there. Yesterday, it was a little sore so a day off as DH should
help.'' INF Chris Woodward, who usually plays SS, played 1B. ...
Manager Carlos Tosca said rookie 3B Eric Hinske is a special
player. "We have a very talented, gifted player here,'' Tosca
said. "He's above the norm.'' Hinske entered Tuesday's game
batting .289 with 16 home runs, 23 doubles and 51 RBI. Hinske
didn't expect to be this good in his rookie season. "I was always
confident in my ability to hit, but I didn't think I would have
this much success this fast,'' Hinske said. ... Tosca said CF
Vernon Wells is Toronto's most improved player since spring
training and he is the best in baseball at chasing down a ball
that's hit behind him.. Wells robbed Robin Ventura of extra bases
with a leaping grab at the wall in Monday's 8-5 victory over New
York.
White Sox at Indians
Chicago: Roland Hemond, an advisor to White Sox general manager
Ken Williams, was released from an Oak Lawn, Ill., hospital
following triple bypass surgery last week. "It looks like I will
only need to go on the 15-day disabled list,'' Hemond joked in a
statement released by the White Sox. "We won't need to use the
60-day DL.'' Hemond has been in baseball for 50 years, including 24
as a general manager for the White Sox (1970-85) and the Baltimore
Orioles (1988-95). He returned to the White Sox in November 2000
after spending five years as senior executive vice president for
the Arizona Diamondbacks. ... Paul Konerko returned to the lineup
after sitting out Monday's game to rest. ... Manager Jerry Manuel
said he'd prefer it if the White Sox didn't make any trades before
the July 31 deadline. "I'd like to see us win ballgames with the
people we have because we've been together for so long this spring
and summer,'' he said. "I'd like to see us do it (without a trade)
but I'm not in control of that. I would like to see the guys we
have be able to take us where we need to go.''
Cleveland: A moment of silence was observed before the game in
tribute to longtime trainer Jim Warfield, who died Tuesday after
suffering a brain hemorrhage. The Indians will wear a "JW'' patch
beginning Friday and plan to dedicate the home training room at
Jacobs Field as the "Jimmy Warfield Training Room''. The club will
also give out a yearly award named for Warfield, who joined the
Indians in 1969. "Jimmy never had a bad day at the ballpark,''
Indians GM Mark Shapiro said. "He will be truly missed.'' ... RHP
Jaret Wright had another impressive start for Triple-A Buffalo as
he tries to get back to the big leagues. Wright pitched seven
shutout innings in a 2-0 win over Charlotte and improved to 3-1
with a 4.13 ERA in six rehab outings. Wright was placed on the
disabled list during spring training. He has undergone two shoulder
surgeries in the past three years. ... The Indians haven't won
three straight games since May 31-June 2.
Athletics at Devil Rays
Oakland: The Athletics were scheduled to fly cross country after
the game to open a two-game home series with divisional foe Anaheim
on Wednesday night. "Every game counts, but obviously it's like a
two-game swing,'' manager Art Howe said. ... CF Terrence Long was
out of the starting lineup. He entered hitless in 10 at-bats.
"Terrence has been struggling a little bit lately,'' Howe said.
"I just felt he needed a day.'' Long pinch-hit in the ninth to
remain with SS Miguel Tejada the only Oakland players to appear in
every game. ... Tampa Bay manager Hal McRae feels the three-team
race in the AL West is too close to call. "Anaheim is much
improved,'' McRae said. "Oakland is playing like they did last
year. Seattle just finds ways to win.''
Tampa Bay: RHP Ryan Rupe (right knee tendinitis) was placed on
the 15-day disabled list. RHP Brandon Backe was recalled from
Double-A Orlando, and will pitch out of the bullpen. ... Manager
Hal McRae has not announced who will take Rupe's spot in the
rotation Saturday at Toronto. ... 3B Jared Sandberg is in the process of getting new contact lenses and will likely be out of the
starting lineup for several games. Felix Escalona replaced Sandberg
Tuesday, and McRae said Jason Smith will start at third Wednesday.
... DH-1B Aubrey Huff started the day with just one RBI in July. He
had a team-leading 15 last month. "He's chasing bad pitches,''
McRae said. "If you play everyday, you're going to go through
those things.'' ... RHP Gerardo Garcia, who participated in the
Futures Game this month, was placed on the disabled list by
Triple-A Durham. He had the nail on his right index ripped off by a
comebacker Sunday.
Rangers at Royals
Texas: Rangers manager Jerry Narron told Dave Burba, who was 4-4
with a 5.01 earned run average in 19 games, 18 of them starts, that
he has been moved to the bullpen. Aaron Myette will be recalled
from Triple-A Oklahoma and start Friday at Oakland, replacing Burba
in the rotation. ... The Rangers made four more roster moves
Tuesday, activating outfielder Gabe Kapler and right-handed
reliever Danny Kolb from the disabled list. To make room on the
roster, the Rangers designated for assignment left-hander Randy
Flores and optioned Joaquin Benoit to Oklahoma. Benoit walked seven
in five-plus innings in a loss Monday at Kansas City. ... John
Rocker, who is on the disabled list with left shoulder bursitis,
threw on a flat surface Tuesday in Texas, the first time he has
picked up a ball since Thursday. ... Jeff Zimmerman threw 16
pitches in a scoreless inning, striking out one and allowing one
hit, in an injury rehab outing Monday with Double-A Tulsa. He is
scheduled to throw again Wednesday with Tulsa.
Kansas City: Rookie left-hander Jeremy Affeldt, who has been out
since June 8 with a broken nail and finger blister, threw long toss
Tuesday after getting the okay from a specialist. "I'm pumped,''
Affeldt said. "I wanted to hear good news, and I got it.'' Affeldt
said he needs to build back up and does not have a timetable when
he would throw off the mound or report to the minors for an injury
rehabilitation assignment. "It's been 34 days,'' he said. "I'm
starting to go through the walls.'' ... First baseman Mike Sweeney
missed his fourth straight game with a stiff lower back. ...
Reserve IF Mike Caruso is 0-for-9 since making his Royals debut on
June 30, his first major league action since 1999 with the Chicago
White Sox.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Marlins at Mets
Florida: RHP Josh Beckett, pitching for the first time since
June 4, had more problems with the Mets than the blisters that have
disabled him twice this season. Beckett allowed seven runs in the
first three innings before retiring the final nine batters,
including five on strikeouts. "He was throwing well at the end,''
manager Jeff Torborg said. "He came out of it healthy. That's the
key.'' ... Florida has lost a season high six straight, including
five since trading Cliff Floyd to Montreal and Ryan Dempster to
Cincinnati last Thursday. The Marlins have a 7.46 ERA and a .213
batting average in the streak, dropping them into fourth place in
the NL East. ... The Marlins optioned RHP Blaine Neal to Triple-A
Calgary to make room for Beckett, who was activated from the 15-day
DL.
New York: C Mike Piazza missed his third straight game with a
stiff back. The Mets hope he'll be back in the lineup Wednesday
night in Montreal. "It's a lingering sort of stiffness and pain,''
Piazza said. ... 1B Mo Vaughn homered for the second straight game
and eighth time in 17 games after hitting just five in his first
62. "It's just about being comfortable in the batter's box,''
Vaughn said. "It took a little time to get into that rhythm.'' ...
The Mets still haven't decided what to do with LHP Mike Bascik, who
won his first two starts, once Steve Trachsel returns from the DL.
Trachsel was the winning pitcher in a rehab start for Double-A
Binghamton on Tuesday night and could return this weekend, meaning
Bascik could be sent back to the minors. "He's the most obvious
guy to send down,'' GM Steve Phillips said. "But we haven't had a
detailed conversation yet because there are so many questions
between now and then.''
Braves at Cubs
Atlanta: With his 33rd save Tuesday, Smoltz tied Eric Gagne for
the major league lead. "It's a confidence thing for me,'' said
Smoltz, a Cy Young winner as a starter in 1996. "People assume
this is the way it was supposed to be all along. I think they
underestimate what the job most of the bullpen guys are doing.''
... Smoltz, Kevin Millwood and Mike Remlinger combined for 16
strikeouts Tuesday. "There was some pretty good pitching today,''
Smoltz said. "There was a lot of pitches thrown today that were
executed as well as can be executed.'' ... Millwood is 7-2 lifetime
against the Cubs. ... With their victory Tuesday, the Braves tied
the 1897 Boston Beaneaters for most consecutive unbeaten series in
franchise history. The Braves have been unbeaten in their last 19
series (16-0-3). Atlanta hasn't lost a series since May 7-9, when
it dropped two of three games to Los Angeles.
Chicago: The Cubs lost for only the second time since interim
manager Bruce Kimm took over. Both losses were to the Braves and by
identical 2-0 scores. "That's baseball,'' said Jon Lieber, who
also took the loss July 7. ... Lieber hasn't beaten the Braves
since May 14, 1999. ... Kimm gave LF Moises Alou the day off, playing Roosevelt Brown instead. "It just makes sense,'' Kimm
said. "Once we get off this trip, those guys will probably play
every day.'' ... A day after he had to pull Sammy Sosa off the field because of a substitution gaffe, Kimm was still bothered by
the mental error. Kimm had put Angel Echevarria at first in the
ninth and wanted him to take Fred McGriff's spot in the batting
order, too. But Kimm mistakenly told umpire Joe West that
Echevarria would be batting third -- Sosa's spot. "I tell our
players mistakes are part of the game, but I'm pretty hard on
myself,'' Kimm said. "It shouldn't have happened. I don't ever
remember making a mistake like that. ... It better not happen
again.'' ... The Cubs will play their first-ever day-night
doubleheader at Wrigley Field on Aug. 31 to make up a game with the
St. Louis Cardinals that was postponed when Darryl Kile died.
Diamondbacks at Giants
Arizona: All-Star C Damian Miller missed his fourth game with a
sore back. Miller left Friday night's game against the Dodgers with
back spasms, and hasn't played since. He is listed as day-to-day.
... The Diamondbacks purchased the contract of C Chad Moeller from
Triple-A Tucson on Monday, and on Tuesday he hit a two-run double
in Arizona's 5-3 victory over the Giants. Moeller played in 25
games for the Diamondbacks last season. ... 3B Matt Williams, a
former Giant, was in the starting lineup Tuesday after serving as a
pinch-hitter Monday night. It was Williams' fourth start after
spending the first half of the season on the disabled list with a
broken leg and a dislocated ankle. He went 0-for-5.
San Francisco: Former Giants outfielder Bobby Bonds, Barry
Bonds' father, was released from the hospital Tuesday after having
a tumor removed from his kidney last week. ... The Giants broke
ground Tuesday on China Basin Park, located across McCovey Cove
from Pacific Bell Park. Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, who will be
honored with a bronze statue of the park, was on hand for the
ceremony. ... Bonds has 41 intentional walks -- four shy of Willie
McCovey's season record, set in 1969. ... Bonds is five home runs
away from 600 for his career. Only three other players have hit
more: Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714) and godfather Willie Mays
(660). ... Tuesday's game attracted 41,936 fans for the 26th
sellout this season at Pacific Bell Park.
Cardinals at Dodgers
St. Louis: Andy Benes, sidelined by an arthritic right knee,
made his first appearance for the Cardinals since April 15 after
coming off the 60-day disabled list. The 34-year-old right-hander
threw 84 pitches over four innings, allowing two runs and three
hits and striking out six. "I'll take Andy Benes anytime. He's a
great competitor and a great clubhouse guy, so you've got to root
for guys like that,'' Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds said.
"He had some problems early in the year, but hopefully he's
straightened them out.'' ... The Cardinals made room for Benes on
the 25-man roster by optioning 30-year-old rookie 3B Mike Coolbaugh
to Triple-A Memphis. Coolbaugh, called up from Triple-A Memphis on
June 30 when J.D. Drew went on the DL, started three games and was
1-for-12 after playing in 39 games last season with Milwaukee. ...
RHP Garrett Stephenson, sidelined since May 30 because of a
strained left hamstring, was transferred from the 15-day DL to the
60-day DL.
Los Angeles: Tuesday was the 54th anniversary of the day manager
Leo Durocher left the Brooklyn Dodgers to pilot the archrival New
York Giants and was replaced by Burt Shotton. The Dodgers' next
midseason managerial change didn't come until 1996, when Tommy
Lasorda had a mild heart attack and was replaced by Bill Russell --
who was given the job about a month later when Lasorda announced
his retirement. ... Hideo Nomo's two-run throwing error to third
base on a sacrifice bunt by St. Louis' Mike Matheny allowed the
tiebreaking runs to score in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to the Cardinals.
Nomo had won his previous seven decisions, matching his career-best
streak in 1995. ... Adrian Beltre, who entered this season with two
homers in 107 career at-bats against St. Louis, hit his second in
as many days against a pitching staff than had gone 48 consecutive
innings between home runs allowed.
Pirates at Astros
Pittsburgh: Durable LHP Jimmy Anderson is still in the rotation,
although Pirates' management would like to see more consistency.
"It's very difficult to find starters,'' general manager Dave
Littlefield said. "Jimmy's given us some good starts. He continues
to step forward and he continues to step back. We want to see if
there's more consistency out there.'' Anderson is 6-10 with a 5.17
ERA. Adds manager Lloyd McClendon said: "Anderson takes the ball.
For three years, he's never missed a start. Now, sometimes he's
very frustrating, but when he throws strikes down in the zone he's
shown he can win in this league.''
Houston: Doctors didn't give RHP Shane Reynolds much time to
think about back surgery. He got a diagnosis and surgery all in the
same day. Because of the quick action, Reynolds is thinking about
rehab and next season. "He (doctor) told me I had a brief window
of opportunity,'' Reynolds said. "He said that nerve damage can be
irreversible and I had to have the surgery now. I was like `excuse
me?' Within a couple of hours of walking in the door, I was on my
way to see the anesthesiologist.'' He hopes to be throwing at full
speed in October and be ready for next season.
Phillies at Expos
Philadelphia: LHP Randy Wolf has allowed 14 earned runs in the
first inning through his first 17 starts for a 7.41 ERA. Wolf, who
is 4-6 with a 4.23 ERA this season, has had just 61 runs in
offensive support this season, an average of just 3.59 per game. He
is 1-4 with a 3.62 ERA in his last nine starts. ... The Phillies
are 99-99 overall at Olympic Stadium after scoring eight times in
the ninth Monday for an 11-8 comeback win. ... Philadelphia has won
13 of its last 18 road games. The Phillies are 18-27 on the road
this season.
Montreal: CF Brad Wilkerson hit his 11th homer Monday as the
Expos homered for the ninth straight game. Wilkerson has hit five
of Montreal's 17 homers over the course of the streak. The team
record for homering in consecutive games is 16 set in 1999. ...
Despite Monday's loss, the Expos have won 16 of their last 22 games
at Olympic Stadium. ... 1B Andres Galarraga has hit in nine
straight games, going 14-for-32 (.438) with two homers -- one as a
pinch hitter -- and six RBI over the course of the streak. ... RF
Vladimir Guerrero is nine hits short of his 1,000th career hit.
Reds at Brewers
Reds: Pitching coach Don Gullett, 51, will be inducted into the
Reds Hall of Fame during pregame ceremonies on Sunday at Cinergy
Field. He is in his 10th season as a member of the coaching staff.
He became pitching coach May 24, 1993. He posted a Reds' career
mark of 91-44 with a 3.03 ERA in seven seasons (1970-1976) His
final two years were with the New York Yankee where he went 18-6. A
rotator cuff injury ended his career at age 27. ... RHP Ryan
Dempster makes his second start for the Reds after being acquired
on July 11 from Florida in exchange for OF Juan Encarnacion, IF
Wilton Guerrero and minor league LHP Ryan Snare. Dempster lost in
his Reds' debut last Friday at Houston, which was the shortest
start (3 2-3 innings) of the season. ... 3b Aaron Boone will set a
career high with his next home run. He has 14 which ties his best
set in 1999 and 2001.
Brewers: C Raul Casanova, who has been on the disabled list with
a torn ligament in his left elbow, swung the bat for the first time
Tuesday. Manager Jerry Royster said it was way too early to
speculate on a possible return date. "He's still in the
strengthening stage,'' he said. ... All-Star 1B Richie Sexson will
play through the pain in his knees. Team doctors say that the only
cure for Sexson's hamstring tendinitis behind his left knee is to
take six weeks off, which isn't going to happen. Royster, who sat
Sexson for two games recently, said he considered giving Sexson two
weeks off, but was told that wouldn't help matters. Instead,
Royster has instructed Sexson to take it easy on the base paths and
not try to break up any double plays as he did Sunday in his return
to the lineup against Pittsburgh. "We're looking at the off season
before he's totally healed,'' Royster said. Prior to Tuesday's
game, Sexson seemed in discomfort even walking up the dugout steps
before batting practice.
Rockies at Padres
Colorado: C Walt McKeel made his first major league start and
appeared in a big league game for the first time since 1997.
McKeel, 30, started his pro career in 1990 in the Red Sox
organization and has played in only six major league games, one for
Boston in 1996 and five more in 1997 with the Red Sox. McKeel,
recalled on Sunday to replace C Bobby Estalella, who was placed on
the 15-day DL, is 0-for-3 in the majors. McKeel was hitting .210
with no home runs and six RBI for the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate,
Colorado Springs. ... INF Juan Uribe (sore left hand) is
unavailable to bat after being hit by a Rodney Myers fastball in
Monday's game.
San Diego: Chargers QB Drew Brees took batting practice with the
Padres and hit a home run. Brees, a rookie backup last season
behind Doug Flutie, liked his performance. "I think honestly --
this might be kind of a reach -- but if my football career would end
today, I think I would actually try to work on becoming a
professional baseball player,'' Brees said. ... Regardless of
Tuesday night's outcome against Colorado, the Padres will have gone
winless in their last nine series since taking a three-game set
against AL West leader Seattle, June 13-15. ... With a 13-24 record
against NL West foes, the road only gets tougher for the Padres,
who play their next 12 games against Los Angeles (5) and Arizona
(7).
