recalled pitcher Mike Smith and sent pitcher Justin Miller back to
the minors.... It was the third split-admission doubleheader in
Toronto's franchise history. ... All five of Chris Carpenter's
starts this year have been on the road. He came in 1-5 with a 5.75
ERA in his career against the Red Sox. ... Toronto is 1-7 against
Boston this year. Boston: The Red Sox placed 2B Carlos Baerga on the disabled list
and purchased the contract of P Wayne Gomes from Triple-A
Pawtucket. ... Tim Wakefield had made 23 consecutive relief

Boston 48 -- two more than last year. ... Boston closer Ugueth
Urbina got the day off to rest after throw
Indians at Yankees
Cleveland: INF Ricky Gutierrez was activated from the 15-day
disabled list before the game. He'd been out since June 13 because
of a strained left groin. Gutierrez started Tuesday night's game,
batting eighth and playing second base. ... RF Matt Lawton returned
to the starting lineup after missing five games because of a sore
right shoulder and homered off Roger Clemens to lead off the game.
... Jim Thome also homered in the first inning, breaking a
franchise-record by homering in his sixth straight game. New York: Roger Clemens made his fourth bid at career victory
No. 289 on Tuesday night, having gone 0-1 in his previous three
starts. He needed one win to pass Tommy John for 21st place on the
all-time list. ... The Yankees are 44-0 when leading after eight
innings. ... INF Ron Coomer remained day to day with a pinched
nerve and muscle spasms in his neck. He has not played in the last
eight games.
Devil Rays at Rangers
Tampa Bay: Tampa Bay entered the three-game series against Texas
having won two straight series for only the second time this
season. ...Wednesday night's starter, RHP Paul Wilson, will be
making his 72nd career start, but just his first against the
Rangers. Wilson is winless in his last eight starts and hasn't won
since May 12. ...The club signed its 25th-round pick from the
amateur free agent draft, RHP Brian Bulger of Georgia College. He
becomes the 17th of the Rays' 50 picks to sign and will be assigned
to Hudson Valley of the New York-Penn League. Texas: RHP Rudy Seanez had surgery to repair a herniated disc in
his back on Tuesday and will miss 6-to-8 weeks. ... RHP Jeff
Zimmerman, the team's projected closer who has yet to pitch this
season because of a right elbow injury, has been throwing in the
bullpen as the next stage in his rehab schedule. ... Texas has gone
198 regular season games without being shut out at home,
second-longest current streak in the majors and longest in team
history. The Rangers were last shut out at home on April 8, 2000 by
Toronto. Colorado has gone 251 games since last being shut out at
Coors Field. Texas' streak is the longest in the AL since Cleveland
went 220 games without a home shutout from 1998-2001.
Tigers at White Sox
Detroit: Manager Luis Pujols is waiting to make a decision on
Bobby Higginson. Pujols is going to wait until Higginson tries
running on his hamstring. "He's going to try to run 100 percent in
the next day or two,'' said Pujols. Higginson has been out since
June 9. Higginson is not expected to play against the White Sox
during the three-game series. ... RHP Brian Moehler is expected to
start sometime this week. Moehler has been on the 60-day disabled
list since April 5 on right shoulder rehab. Pujols expects to make
a move after he talks to GM David Dombrowski on Tuesday. Chicago: OF Magglio Ordonez wasn't voted in as the 30th player
by the fans for the next week's All-Star game in Milwaukee. Ordonez
is batting .315 on the season with 13 home runs and 60 RBI.
Ordonez was a member on the last two American League teams. "Its
something I wasn't really worried about,'' Ordonez said. ...
Manager Jerry Manuel and GM Kenny Williams were faced with a tough
decision when Sandy Alomar Jr. came off the DL on Sunday. When
Alomar went on the DL he was he replaced by Josh Paul. During
Paul's stint with the White Sox he batted .500 going 10 for 20.
Paul was sent back down to Triple-A Charlotte. Alomar was placed on
the disabled list with arm problems. "I have never been on the DL
regarding my arm and never had problems with any shoulder problem
so it was frustrating because I was doing good, now I have a little
bump in the road, but everything seems to be OK.'' ... Manuel has
not decided on an everyday closer yet. RHP Keith Foulke lost the
role in early June and RHP Antonio Osuna replaced him. But Manuel
will decide on who the closer is on a game by game basis. "Right
now tonight it would probably be Osuna,'' said Manuel.
Orioles at Angels
Baltimore: The Orioles' schedule has them playing in New York on
Sept. 11, the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the
World Trade Center. They were at Yankee Stadium on another mournful
occasion back in 1979 -- the Yankees' first game after the death of
Thurman Munson in his private plane. "It's certainly a much
different circumstance, losing thousands of people in an attempted
war, as opposed to one very good friend in an airplane crash,''
said 1B coach Rick Dempsey, who was an Orioles catcher at the time
and attended his former Yankee teammate's funeral that afternoon in
Canton, Ohio. "A lot of people lost very best friends on Sept. 11,
so there will be a lot of memories at that time. It will certainly
be an apprehensive series -- thinking that maybe some crazy people
would want to try something really idiotic on a day like that. But
I would think that security is going to be so tight that nobody
would want to take a chance.'' Anaheim: Despite having the seventh-best record in baseball, the
Angels will become the 19th team to reach the 1 million mark in
attendance on Wednesday. "Growing up watching the team, the fans
here are always a tough sell. They're going to show their belief in
the team through the attendance,'' RHP Kevin Appier said. "And
even though we've been playing well for a couple of months, it's
probably going to take a little longer for them to be convinced of
our ability. There's a lot of stuff for people to do out here, and
they have to come from farther away. So it's a little tougher sell.
You have to prove yourself longer here to draw.'' ... The return of
utility INF Benji Gil from the DL and the improved play of Jose
Nieves has translated into less playing time for 2B Adam Kennedy,
who has been platooned a lot lately. "It's not easy, that's for
sure, but I'm trying to make the best of it,'' Kennedy said. "Last
year I didn't quite know how to deal with it. This year I've been
trying to work extra hard when I'm not in there and not let maybe a
lack of confidence affect me and how I prepare. But it's good that
the three us are pulling for each other and are good friends away
from this situation.'' ... DH Brad Fullmer was scratched from
Tuesday night's game because of flulike symptoms.
Royals at Mariners
Kansas City: Manager Tony Pena wants to find a way to keep INF
Luis Alicea in the lineup once 2B Carlos Febles returns from a leg
injury, which could happen as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. As
Febles' replacement, Alicea made his sixth straight start and is
hitting .308 in his past six games in the leadoff hole. He said he
is seeing the ball well and is gaining confidence. "I'm just happy
I'm getting a chance to play,'' he said. "I'm going to keep
working and getting better. It's great to get a chance to
contribute.'' ... The Royals have used a total of 41 players this
season after using 44 players in 2001. RHP Kris Wilson became the
41st player used by Kansas City this season when he made his season
debut out of the bullpen in Monday's 7-0 loss to Seattle. ... The
Royals entered Tuesday's game with a 171-142 all-time record
against the Mariners, their best winning percentage against any
team. Seattle: 3B Jeff Cirillo got the day off since he had been
feeling ill Monday. Utility man Mark McLemore started at third in
his place and Ruben Sierra in left field. ... Manager Lou Piniella
called Yankees manager Joe Torre to campaign for LHP Jamie Moyer to
be added to the AL All-Star team that Torre will manage. "He
thanked me for the call and said he'd give it serious
consideration,'' Piniella said. "He said he is thinking of another
pitcher also.'' ... RHP Paul Abbott is wearing a sling on his
throwing arm after having shoulder surgery Friday. He will wear the
sling for three weeks, then begin range of motion exercises and
other rehab work. He hopes to be 100 percent by January and ready
for spring training. ... CF Mike Cameron batted in ninth. He's
recently been hitting seventh and also has hit in the second and
sixth slots this season. Piniella used Cameron in No. 9 spot "so
I've got good speed in the ninth hole. We use the ninth hole
basically as a speed hole 95 percent of the time.'' ... LHP Norm
Charlton hopes to be available as soon as September. The
39-year-old reliever had surgery Jan. 28 to repair a torn rotator
cuff and a torn labrum. He's been throwing ever other day along
with strength work. "I think most guys 35-plus play the game
because they love playing the game. I love playing the game. If you
tell me I can't do it, I will prove to you and myself that I can.''
Twins at Athletics
Minnesota: The Twins are unbeaten is four consecutive series
overall, and four consecutive series at Oakland Coliseum, where
they played the second of a three game set against the A's Tuesday
night. Minnesota opened the series with a 5-4 victory. ... Double-A
New Britain outfielder Lew Ford was named the Eastern League's
Player of the Week after going 14-for-32 with three doubles, a home
run and nine RBI. ... LHP Johan Santana's 1.88 ERA in June was
second in the majors only to Jamie Moyer, with a 1.01 ERA. Santana
was scheduled to start on Wednesday night against A's lefty Mark
Mulder. ... The Twins were 5-4 against the A's last season. Oakland: The A's committed 10 errors in the first four games of
their current homestand for a total of 52 this season. They
committed at least one error in each of the four games. Oakland was
28-15 in games without an error and 18-21 in games with one or
more. ... The A's have not had a player on the disabled list since
David Justice was activated on June 4. It is the first time Oakland
has gone more than four straight days without a player on the DL
since 1989 when the A's were injury-free from July 31st until the
end of the season. ... Wednesday's starter Mark Mulder went 6-0 in
June with a 2.51 ERA, becoming the first pitcher to win six games
in one month since Bob Welch did it in August 1990.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brewers at Pirates
Milwaukee: Jamey Wright's three-hitter against Pittsburgh on
Monday night was the Brewers' sixth complete game this season.
Going into this season, they had only nine complete games in their
first four seasons in the NL. Milwaukee hasn't had seven complete
games since 1995, when it played in the AL. ... Manager Jerry
Royster hasn't been invited to any All-Star events and currently
doesn't plan to attend the game. ... Richie Sexson could take part
in Monday's Home Run Derby competition at the All-Star game. The
top four home run hitters for each team are asked to take part, but
some players usually decline the invitation. Sexson currently
trails Sammy Sosa, Lance Berkman, Barry Bonds, Shawn Green,
Vladimir Guerrero and Andruw Jones among NL All-Stars. ... RHP Nick
Neugebauer (strained rotator cuff) has been throwing on the side in
Pittsburgh and could begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A
Indianapolis over the weekend. Pittsburgh: Manager Lloyd McClendon won't be surprised if RHP
Kip Wells throws a no-hitter -- or two -- before his career is over.
Wells came within five outs of a no-hitter Monday before giving up
two hits in the eighth inning of a 2-0 loss to Milwaukee. McClendon
said, "His slider, at times, is unhittable -- and I didn't think he
had his best slider last night. I could see him having a couple of
no-hitters before his career is over.'' ... RHP Ryan Vogelsong
(reconstructive elbow surgery) will make his first rehabilitation
start for Single-A Lynchburg on Wednesday. He has been sidelined
since his Sept. 20 operation. Vogelsong injured his elbow in his
only his second Pirates start after being traded by San Francisco.
... Mike Williams already owns the Pirates club record for saves
before the All-Star break. He is one short of his career high of 24
saves set last season, before he was dealt to Houston on July 31
and became a setup man rest of the season.
Mets at Phillies
New York: After batting fifth for the first time since 1998,
Roberto Alomar led off Tuesday. He walked and scored in the first
inning and had an RBI double in the second. .. Manager Bobby
Valentine has used 58 lineups in 82 games. ... Timo Perez has hit
safely in 29 of his last 43 games. ... The Mets are the only team
that has used only five starting pitchers this season. ... The Mets
are 15-32 when scoring three runs or fewer. They had five in the
first two innings Tuesday. Philadelphia: OF/1B Jeremy Giambi was out of the lineup for the
second straight game with tendinitis in his wrist. Manager Larry
Bowa said Giambi is day-to-day. ... The Phillies unveiled a dual
Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn bobblehead doll that will be given
to fans on Aug. 18. Kalas and Ashburn were broadcast partners for
27 years. Kalas will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.
Ashburn, a Hall of Fame player, died in 1997. ... After allowing
three runs or fewer in four straight starts, Terry Adams gave up
five runs in the first two innings Tuesday.
Astros at Reds
Houston: Lance Berkman homered in each of his first two at-bats,
giving him 27 for the season. He has four multihomer games this
season, 11 in his career. ... He also hit three homers against the
Reds in a game at Cinergy Field on April 16 -- two off Jose Acevedo,
one off Jose Rijo. He homered again the next day in Cincinnati,
matching the club record with four homers in two consecutive games.
... Six of his 27 homers have come in five games at Cinergy this
season. ... Berkman, the Astros' only All-Star representative, has
homered in four of his last five games. ... Both of Berkman's
homers Tuesday were off Joey Hamilton, whom he had never faced. ...
The Astros put LHP Carlos Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list
with a sore left shoulder. Hernandez, 22, hasn't won since May 31,
going 0-2 in his last five starts with a 10.42 earned run average.
He was scratched from a start last Thursday because the shoulder
felt tight and lasted only 1 1-3 innings against the Reds on Monday
night. Cincinnati: LHP Gabe White said his shoulder has been a little
tight, but he's otherwise close to normal. White missed a week
because of an infected pitching arm, but returned for a weekend
series in St. Louis and threw two scoreless innings. ... RHP Joey
Hamilton hasn't won since May 29. He gave up five runs in four
innings Tuesday, leaving him with one victory and a 6.86 ERA in
eight starts since he returned from a strained hamstring. ... Ken
Griffey Jr. was the target of a couple of banners that were
unfolded briefly before Tuesday's game. One in left field said,
"Nice Without Griffey.'' Another in right field said, ''4 Reds
Tickets -- $30, 4 Sodas -- $10, 4 Hot Dogs -- $15, Ken Griffey Jr. --
Worthless.'' Griffey is on the DL for the second time this season
and won't return until after the All-Star game. He missed 6½ weeks
with a torn tendon in his right knee, returned for two weeks and
pulled his right hamstring. The Reds are 7-13 with Griffey in the
starting lineup.
Expos at Braves
Montreal: RHP Bartolo Colon made his first start since coming
from Cleveland in a trade last week. His last start for the Indians
came against the Expos on June 22. He won that game, going eight
innings and allowing two runs on nine hits. ... Colon throws in the
high 90s, but he hasn't had a double-figure strikeout game this
season. He struck out nine in back-to-back starts April 28 and May
4. ... LHP Joey Eischen hadn't given up a run in his previous 11
appearances out of the bullpen. He was 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA. Atlanta: Only three active players had faced Montreal RHP
Bartolo Colon in the regular season before Tuesday. Henry Blanco,
Darren Bragg and Vinny Castilla were a combined 3-for-20. ... LHP
Damian Moss, who started Tuesday night, was allowing opponents a
.199 batting average. That would lead the league, but he was two
innings short of qualifying.
Cubs at Marlins
Chicago: The Cubs activated RHP Tom Gordon from the 60-day DL in
time for Tuesday's game against the Marlins. Gordon, who had a torn
muscle in the back of his shoulder, last pitched on Sept. 5.
...When the Cubs think about what has caused them to fall 14 games
below .500, they need to look no further than their weak offensive
numbers. They rank last in the NL with a .241 batting average and
are tied for last in hits with 635 in 80 games. ...Gordon needs two
saves to reach 100 and two strikeouts to reach the 1,500 plateau. Florida: The trade of Raul Mondesi to the Yankees has had a
ripple effect through the Marlins' clubhouse, specifically OF Cliff
Floyd. The acquisition of Mondesi likely ends talk of Floyd going
to the Yankees. Floyd, who makes $6.5 million and is a free agent
after this season, now awaits the July 31 deadline uncertain
whether he'll remain with the Marlins or be dealt elsewhere. "You
think it would happen,'' Floyd said. "Why wouldn't you want to
trade a guy who is going to be a free agent? If you don't, you get
nothing for him.'' ... With his third-inning single on Monday, Mike
Lowell became the second-fastest Marlin to reach 100 hits in a
season. Luis Castillo collected his 100th hit in his 79th game this
year. It took Lowell 82 games to get hit No. 100. ... After getting
rained out on Monday, RHP Josh Beckett pitched a simulated game on
Tuesday and is scheduled to pitch for Class-A Jupiter Saturday.
Padres at Cardinals
San Diego: LHP Oliver Perez is the second Padres starter to give
up four homers in a start this year, giving up seven runs in six
innings Monday against the Cardinals. The Cubs victimized RHP Brett
Tomko on May 2. But the Cardinals were impressed with the skills
and composure of Perez, 20, the youngest player in the major
leagues. "He's going to throw a no-hitter in this league one of
these days,'' manager Tony La Russa said. "He just made a few
location mistakes.'' ... CF Mark Kotsay is tied for second in the
majors with nine assists, including five in the last 13 games. He
leads the majors with 66 assists since the start of the 1998
season. ... RHP Brian Lawrence, who squandered a five-run
first-inning lead in his last start in Friday's 14-10 loss at
Kansas City, makes his team-leading 18th start in the series finale
at St. Louis on Wednesday. Nine current Cardinals are a combined
4-for-26 against Lawrence, with only Jim Edmonds (2-for-3) getting
more than one hit. St. Louis: If LHP Rick Ankiel makes it back to the major leagues
this year, it'll likely be as a relief pitcher and not a starter.
Ankiel hasn't pitched since his lone spring training start on March
3, due to elbow tendinitis. "You can get him conditioned to throw
15-30 pitches in two weeks and he can have a responsibility that's
not overwssa said. "You're a starter, it's a hell of a
responsibility. We'd love to have him here pitching in our bullpen
and then in the rotation next year.'' There's no firm plan for
Ankiel's next step on the slow comeback trail, though. "It kind of
is flexible, day to day, depending on how he feels,'' La Russa
said. "I'm not sure what day today is.'' ... CF Jim Edmonds said
his sore right wrist, which landed him on the disabled list last
month, has been feeling better the last few days. Edmonds hit an
upper-deck home run estimated at 457 feet on Monday. ... SS Edgar
Renteria got a day off Tuesday after starting 29 straight games. La
Russa gave 2B Fernando Vina the day off on Monday.
Giants at Rockies
San Francisco: Manager Dusty Baker normally gets in at least a
morning of fishing with a local guide from Loveland, Colo., but he
didn't this trip. "I left the rod and reel behind,'' Baker said.
"There wasn't time and there were things involving the ballclub
that I had to attend to.'' ... One was to monitor the injuries of
OF Marvin Benard (sore left knee) and 1B J.T. Snow (turf toe).
Benard struck out as a pinch hitter Monday while Snow was a
defensive replacement in the ninth inning. "We are hopeful they
are progressing,'' Baker said. "But we will be watching them both
closely until they are back at a full time basis.'' ... 2B Jeff
Kent has flourished since moving from cleanup to the third spot in
the lineup, but it hasn't helped Barry Bonds. Kent is 13-for-24
with three home runs and 15 RBI over the last five games while
Bonds is 2-for-15 with no home runs in the cleanup spot. "There is
no explanation for either,'' Baker said. "Maybe it was time for
Barry to scuffle and Jeff to get hot.'' ... The Giants entered
Tuesday's game with a major league-leading 96 double plays turned. Colorado: Manager Clint Hurdle said he isn't concerned about the
mindset of closer Jose Jimenez after he blew a save in an 8-6 loss
to the Giants Monday night. "He's matured into this role. He's
accepted the challenge of being the closer. His comments now are
that he's ready to get the ball again and that's the mentality you
have to have.'' ... Hurdle said the Rockies didn't take a different
approach to facing Jeff Kent even though he's been on a tear for
nearly a week. "We didn't try to pitch Kent any differently than
we normally would do. We made some mistakes and he made us pay for
them.'' ... LHP Kent Mercker has started tossing a ball around and
is scheduled to have pins removed from his left hand later this
week. Mercker had surgery June 5 after a comebacker split the
webbing between his fingers. ... Hurdle said INF Terry Shumpert is
still being bothered by a sore knee. "Sometimes it looks like he's
flying around there and other times it looks like he walking back
to the huddle like Jim Brown.'' ... Hurdle said SS Juan Uribe's
struggles at the plate -- 3-for-36 before Tuesday -- may be because
he's too anxious. "If we could just get him to put a little weight
on that back foot and stay back until the pitcher lets go of the
ball, he'll be all right.''
Dodgers at Diamondbacks
Los Angeles: RF Shawn Green was back in the lineup after sitting
out the series opener Monday against left-hander Randy Johnson.
"I'm excited. I'd like to go out there and try to do something
good,'' said Green, who also was nursing a sore left thumb after
colliding with CF Dave Roberts on Saturday. ... 2B Mark
Grudzielanek fared worse in another collision with a teammate.
Grudzielanek got a concussion when he ran into Brian Jordan's knee
on Sunday, and the headaches returned when he took batting practice
Monday. He missed his second straight game, with Alex Cora getting
his seventh start at second. ... C Paul Lo Duca has 29 multihit
games after going 2-for-5 Monday night. ... The Dodgers could win
for the 10th time in 14 road series by beating the Diamondbacks in
this game or Wednesday's. ... Manager Jim Tracy said RHP Darren
Dreifort, who tore an elbow ligament on June 29, 2001, and had
surgery 10 days later, will pitch live for the first time since on
Friday in St. Louis. Arizona: The Diamondbacks are 48-33 at the halfway mark, two
games worse than their record a year ago. ... 1B Mark Grace broke
his toe Sunday in the visitor's clubhouse in Cleveland, but
believes he can play if called upon. With Erubiel Durazo on the
15-day DL, the Diamondbacks are down to Greg Colbrunn, but manager
Bob Brenly believes he has capable replacements. "Chris Donnels
can play first base, (Craig) Counsell can play first base, Steve
Finley can play first, pitch or catch,'' Brenly said. "Rod Barajas
can play there. We have some options available if necessary.'' ...
Durazo has been on the DL six times in the last 3½ years, a
puzzling streak of bad luck. "I always just played,'' Durazo said.
"It's just a bad year.'' ... To replace Durazo, the Diamondbacks
called up INF Alex Cintron was called up from Triple-A Tucson for
the third time, and he started at shortstop this game in place of
Tony Womack. ... Brenly also shook up the lineup, sitting Finley,
moving Quinton McCracken from RF to CF and putting Jose Guillen in
right.
