Expos second baseman Jose Vidro missed the game with a knee injury. He is day-to-day.
Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz was given the day off after spraining his ankle Saturday.

The Padres were 9-18 in June, the first time they had fewer than 10 wins in a full month since they were 9-19 in June of 1986.
The last word "It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. We're too good a ball team to be losing games to them.'' -- Florida starter A.J. Burnett after the Marlins lost to the Devil Rays 6-5 in 12 innings.

INTERLEAGUE
Braves at Red Sox
Atlanta: Jason Marquis has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of
11 starts, but five or more in the other four starts. He retired 14
of the first 16 batters. ... Darren Bragg stole his first base of
the season. ... Rafael Furcal has a nine-game hitting streak. ...
Five of Gary Sheffield's nine doubles have come in interleague
play. ... The Braves swept the Red Sox for the first time since
1997.
Boston: The Red Sox are 18-19 at home. ... Frank Castillo is 2-7
in his career against Atlanta. ... Nomar Garciaparra leads the team
with 10 interleague RBI. ... Brian Daubach's 10th homer of the
season was his seventh at Fenway, and his 23rd RBI at home, out of
33 overall. ... Trot Nixon has 15 hits in his last 41 at-bats to
raise his average to .253.
Expos at Blue Jays
Montreal: RF Vladimir Guerrero and 2B Jose Vidro were both voted
to start the All-Star game -- becoming the first Expos teammates to
start an All-Star game in 18 years. "To be one of the starters is
unbelievable,'' said Vidro, who is hitting .334. with eight home
runs and 55 RBI. "I can't say enough thank yous to the people
that voted for me. They made the right choice.'' Guerrero is
hitting .327 with 18 home runs and 55 RBI. "It feels real good.
I'm very happy that I've made it four years in a row,'' Guerrero
said through an interpreter ... 3B Fernando Tatis has 15 RBI in
his last 15 games.
Toronto: RHP Roy Halladay, who began last season in A-ball,
couldn't believe he was selected to the All-Star team. "It's
something I never would have thought of. My only goal was to get
back here and be consistent,'' Halladay said. The 25-year-old
right-hander had success when he was first called up to the majors
in 1998, but he struggled in 2000 and was demoted to A-ball for the
start of the 2001 season. He is 9-4 with a 3.15 ERA this season.
"Fortunately, things have worked out really well,'' Halladay said.
... Rookie 3B Eric Hinske has hit in nine straight.
Diamondbacks at Indians
Arizona: Diamondbacks coach Robin Yount is jumping leagues
again. Yount will serve as the AL's honorary captain at the
All-Star game in Milwaukee, where he had a 20-year Hall of Fame
playing career. "It has been so exciting all year getting back
into baseball,'' said Yount, who returned to baseball this season
after retiring in 1993. "I had been away for eight or nine years
and a lot of things have changed, but not having fun.'' He's
looking forward to putting a Brewers' jersey on once again. "This
will really mean a lot,'' he said. "It will be a little strange
that I am now with a National League team and I will be in the AL
dugout. But it is more of an exhibition game and it going to be
fun. I really can't wait.'' ... 2B Junior Spivey is batting .327
(15-for-52) during his career-high 14-game hitting streak -- the
majors longest current streak. ... Spivey's fifth-inning homer was
Arizona's first in 45 innings, and Steve Finley's double in the
third was the Diamondbacks' first extra-base hit in 27 innings. ...
RHP Curt Schilling's complete game on Sunday was the 73rd of his
career.
Cleveland: It's been a long time since the Indians had a June
swoon like this. They finished the month 11-15, their worst month
since going 7-15 in April 1993 and their worst June since they went
7-21 in 1991. ... Jim Thome homered in his fifth straight game
Sunday, matching the club record he shares with Sandy Alomar Jr.,
Larry Doby and Al Rosen. Thome and Rosen both did it twice. ... Lee
Stevens, who came to the Indians last week in a trade from
Montreal, played in the outfield for the first time since Sept. 2,
1998, on Sunday. "I'll put it this way, it's been so long that I
had to borrow an outfielder's glove,'' said Stevens, a first
baseman/DH during most of his career. Using one of Ben Broussard's
gloves, Stevens didn't look bad in the field. Before joining the
Indians on Friday, Stevens said he hadn't even caught a fly ball in
the outfield in years. "I've played there enough I know what to
do. Just stick with the fundamentals and don't do anything
foolish.''
Mets at Yankees
Mets: 3B Edgardo Alfonzo was given the night off and replaced by
John Valentin in the starting lineup. ... C Mike Piazza was
selected to his 10th straight All-Star game. "I'm always
thrilled,'' he said. "It's a great honor. It's something I never
take lightly. I love going. It never gets old for me. It's a fun
time. It's kind of like a truce from the season. I don't ever want
to take it for granted or think it's a given.'' Piazza was the only
Met to make the team. "It would have been nice to go with
somebody,'' he said. ... The Mets activated reliever Grant Roberts
from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Satoru
Komiyama to Triple-A Norfolk. ... Mets manager Bobby Valentine said
he would have campaigned hard for pitchers Al Leiter and Pedro
Astacio to make the All-Star team, but he wasn't asked by Arizona
manager Bob Brenly. Valentine said when he picked the NL team in
2001, he called every other manager in the league to ask for input.
"I guess Bob knew everything he needed to know,'' Valentine said.
Yankees: OF Shane Spencer, nursing a sprained left wrist, and
INF Ron Coomer, bothered by muscle spasms and a pinched nerve in
his neck, were still unavailable. Both were expected to be ready to
play Tuesday night against Cleveland. ... 3B Robin Ventura was
selected to the All-Star team for the second time in his career --
and first since 1992. "You've got to space it out,'' he said
jokingly. "It's too tough on your body.''... Derek Jeter is one of
five AL shortstops going to the All-Star game. "There's a lot of
things going on with Jeter that don't necessarily show up on the
stat sheet,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said. Jeter was proud to be
among the group. "It's special. I think especially playing
shortstop -- there are so many guys that have an opportunity to go.
It gets more difficult every year. Nowadays, the things that the
shortstops are doing, it's pretty impressive,'' he said. New York's
Alfonso Soriano is the only AL second baseman going to the All-Star
game, and Torre said he might ask for volunteers to play second.
"No chance. I don't think I would hang in there on a double
play,'' Jeter said. "You can put me at second, but I'm going to
play a shift.'' ... The Yankees purchased the contract of catcher
Chris Widger from Triple-A Columbus and designated catcher Alberto
Castillo for assignment. ... Jorge Posada will be the AL's starting
catcher in the All-Star game. Torre recalled starting at catcher
for the NL during his playing days. "Starting the All-Star game as
a catcher is great. You get to catch all those great pitchers that
get you out. When you walk into that clubhouse, you see the best in
the world.''
Pirates at Tigers
Pittsburgh: By winning two of three in Detroit, the Pirates
picked up just their second road series win in 10 tries. ... Mike
Williams has saves in his last four outings and hasn't allowed a
run in his last five. ... After going hitless in their first 14
at-bats, Pittsburgh's designated hitters finished the season at
3-for-21. Craig Wilson had all three hits, while Aramis Ramirez was
0-for-10 and Abraham Nunez 0-for-1. ... Pittsburgh won more games
against Detroit (two) than in their other three interleague series
combined (one).
Detroit: The Tigers finished June with a 7-20 record, their
worst June since going 8-24 in 1975. ... Detroit scored just five
runs in three games against Pittsburgh. "It's really bad right
now,'' catcher Brandon Inge said. "We've gone up against some good
pitchers, but we aren't getting the job done. I think we are just
trying too hard with runners on base.'' ... Tiger broadcaster Ernie
Harwell, who is retiring at the end of the season, will be a guest
on the Fox broadcast of the July 9 All-Star game.
Phillies at Orioles
Philadelphia: Since he missed four games between June 19-22 with
a mild left ankle sprain, 3B Scott Rolen has hit in seven of eight
games. Rolen is 30-for-102 with eight homers and 22 RBI lifetime
against the Orioles. At Camden Yards, he is hitting .315 with five
homers and 12 RBI. ... Manager Larry Bowa has used 46 lineups this
season, but used the same order for all three games at Camden
Yards. ... The Phillies have won their last four road series.
Baltimore: For the second time in three starts, RHP Sidney
Ponson left a game with an injury. Ponson developed a blister on
the middle finger of his right hand Sunday after two innings and
was replaced by Chris Brock. Brock followed Ponson when he was
removed from a June 19 game in Arizona after being struck by Steve
Finley's grounder on the right wrist. Manager Mike Hargrove did not
think Ponson would miss his next start. ... OF Chris Singleton left
the club on Sunday to attend a memorial service in Arizona for his
late sister, Yolanda Chandler. He will rejoin the club Tuesday in
Anaheim. ... LHP B.J. Ryan has allowed 15 runs in his last 25
relief outings over 18 innings.
Astros at Rangers
Houston: Kirk Saarloos' first stint in the majors is over.
Saarloos, who followed Chicago's Mark Prior as the second player
from last year's amateur draft to be called up to the majors, was
sent to Triple-A New Orleans on Sunday after a third straight rough
outing. Saarloos lost his first two and left his third trailing 5-0
after two-plus innings. He goes down with a 17.65 ERA. RHP Jim Mann
was called up from New Orleans to replace him. Mann was 0-1 with a
5.14 ERA in six appearances with the Astros earlier this season.
... Two years into the Lone Star Series, Astros 2B Craig Biggio
doesn't think there's much of a rivalry between the teams. "We've
got to get a lot of games in before there's a rivalry,'' said
Biggio, who had a chance to stir things up after getting beaned in
the hand Saturday night. "I think in time it'll be something real
nice.''
Texas: This is only the third time in 12 seasons that the
Rangers have only one All-Star. In the past, Ivan Rodriguez has
been the lone Ranger. This time, it's Alex Rodriguez. Pudge's
omission ends a run of nine straight starts and 10 consecutive
appearances. He missed a chance to break the record for consecutive
starts at catcher that he shares with Johnny Bench and he remains
two shy of Yogi Berra's record of 11 total starts. ... Dave Burba
has been a hard-luck starter. He's 4-4 with eight no-decisions and
the bullpen has blown saves in three of his starts. The latest came
Saturday night, when the 5-3, seventh-inning lead he left behind
turned into an 8-5 loss. It was the eighth time Texas has lost when
leading after six innings.
Marlins at Devil Rays
Florida: SS Alex Gonzalez, sidelined since May 19 by a
dislocated left shoulder, will begin a rehab assignment either
Monday or Tuesday. He is expected to join for the Marlins Gulf
Coast League team in Jupiter, Fla. ...The Marlins are 14-11 in
one-run games. ... Florida finished interleague play at 10-8. ...
Kevin Millar, who left Saturday's game with a bruised left knee,
was the designated hitter and went 0-for-5. He has three hits in
his last 25 at-bats.
Tampa Bay: The Devil Rays are 11-13 in one-run games, and 6-4 in
extra innings. ... Many of the playoff contenders, including the
New York Yankees, New York Mets, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Los
Angeles and Boston had scouts present during the weekend series
with Florida. ... Manager Hal McRae said RHP Ryan Rupe (right knee
tendinitis) will be activated when eligible to come off the 15-day
disabled list July 5. ... LF Jason Conti, filling in for the
injured Greg Vaughn, snapped an 0-for-18 slide with an 11th inning
single. ... Backup infielder Felix Escalona was 2-for-5 and has
seven hits in 14 at-bats over his past three starts.
Cubs at White Sox
Cubs: Mark Bellhorn became the first Cub since Ellis Burton in
1964 to homer from both sides of the plate in one game. "The Cubs
have been around a long time and they've got a lot of tradition,''
said Bellhorn, who can't remember homering from both sides of the
plate ever before. "It's special to have my name in that book.''
... After years of people raving about Matt Clement's potential,
he's finally showing his considerable skills. Clement came within
three outs of his second career complete game -- his first was in
May -- and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts for the fourth
time this year. "He's gaining a lot of confidence,'' manager Don
Baylor said. "He's been told many, many times about his staff. Now
you're seeing his good stuff.'' ... Getting a rare start, Angel
Echevarria went 2-for-5 with an RBI. "I'm here to come off the
bench and pinch-hit and spot start, and that's what I did today,''
he said. "I'm very happy I was able to contribute.'' ... The Cubs
are now 14-16 in interleague play against the South Siders.
White Sox: Though the White Sox are six games behind Minnesota
in the AL Central, they still think they have a shot at the
division title. The Twins and White Sox play 15 times in the second
half, including six of their last nine games. "We're going to do
everything we can to get back into this Central Division and try
and be competitive,'' manager Jerry Manuel said. ... Mark Buehrle
has struggled in his last two outings, compiling a 10.80 ERA. ...
Kenny Lofton's bunt single in the first snapped an 0-for-12 slump,
but he's still 5-for-46 (.109) over the last 12 games. ... Ray
Durham has a seven-game hitting streak, matching his longest of the
season.
Brewers at Twins
Milwaukee: 1B Richie Sexson and SS Jose Hernandez were chosen to
play in the All-Star game in their home park. It is only the second
time since 1988 that the team has had two All-Stars. Jeromy Burnitz
and Dave Nilsson were both selected in 1999. The Brewers have had
multiple All-Stars only four times since their World Series year of
1982. ... Milwaukee is just 4-16 against left-handers this year.
Minnesota: RHP Joe Mays, on the 60-day DL with a sore right
elbow, leaves Sunday for Fort Myers, Fla., for a rehab assignment
with the Twins' Class-A affiliate. Mays will pitch Tuesday and
Sunday. "I'll be ready after the All-Star break,'' Mays said.
"Whether they throw me in there is up to Andy (pitching coach Rick
Anderson) and Gardy (manager Ron Gardenhire).'' ... Gardenhire will
rejoin the Twins on Monday in Oakland after missing five games to
attend his father's funeral. ... The Twins could get four pitchers
off the DL shortly after the All-Star break: starters Mays and Brad
Radke and relievers Bob Wells and Jack Cressend. "I've spent most
of the year wondering who our five healthy starters are and who
we're going to throw out of the bullpen,'' Anderson said. "Having
too many pitchers is a good problem to have.'' ... Jacque Jones, in
the throes of an 0-for-20 slump, got the day off on Sunday against
LHP Glendon Rusch. Jones is hitting .191 against lefties versus
.326 against righties. Twins 1B Doug Mientkiewicz also got the day
off after mildly spraining his ankle Saturday night.
Padres at Royals
San Diego: Julius Matos was 3-for-4 Sunday to account for three
of the Padres' five hits. ... Manager Bruce Bochy said he was
unsure what moves would be made as pitchers Dave Lundquist and
Jason Middlebrook go on the DL. ... The Padres are 44-48 all-time
in interleague play. They have a winning record against Seattle,
Tampa Bay and Anaheim.
Kansas City: The Royals optioned OF Alexis Gomez to Double-A
Wichita and recalled RHP Kris Wilson from Triple-A Omaha. Wilson,
25, started the season on the major league roster but had
tendinitis in his right triceps. He was 2-0 with a 3.08 ERA in
eight games at Omaha. ... 1B Mike Sweeney and reliever Roberto
Hernandez were named the Royals' player and pitcher of the month.
Hernandez had five saves in six opportunities and an ERA of 1.54.
Sweeney hit .400 for the month with three homers and 20 RBI.
Giants at Athletics
San Francisco: OF Marvin Benard was a late scratch from the
starting lineup because of a sore left knee. "He said his knee has
been bothering him for a week or so,'' manager Dusty Baker said.
"It's swollen and stiff.'' ... 1B J.T. Snow missed his second
straight game with what has been diagnosed as turf toe. X-rays
revealed no break, but there's still some pain according to Giants
trainer Stan Conte. There are no plans to put him on the DL.
"We're just going to try to make it through the next week and take
a break,'' Baker said. "I'm just glad we have some bodies to
play.'' ... Baker said he's also happy to be returning to a NL only
schedule. "I like going back to an NL schedule because we're an NL
team,'' he said. "We're not an NL/AL team; we're back where we
belong.'' ... 2B Jeff Kent, who drove in six runs in the first two
games at the Oakland Coliseum, would probably like to play a few
more games there. "This is more of an offensive ballpark than Pac
Bell,'' he said. "Pac Bell is like the bottom of the scale.
Oakland is probably the top of the scale: better weather, less
wind.'' Kent had an error taken away with an official scoring
change from Saturday's game. He dropped a foul ball in the first
inning. ... OF Barry Bonds was walked intentionally for the 36th
time in the first inning, nine off the major league record set by
Willie McCovey in 1969.
Oakland: SS John McCurdy, one of the Athletics' four first-round
draft picks in the amateur draft, was on hand Sunday to officially
sign his contract and participate in pregame activities. "I met
all the A's personnel people and was introduced to the players,''
McCurdy said. "Everybody was pretty nice.'' McCurdy, who agreed to
terms on Friday, took grounders along side Miguel Tejada before
taking batting practice. "That's not a bad deal,'' McCurdy said.
"He was giving me some pointers. The infield coach (Ron
Washington) also gave me some pointers.'' McCurdy grew up in the
Baltimore area, attended Maryland, and admired Cal Ripken. He took
part in the Orioles pre-draft camp and was able to hit at Camden
Yards. He's expected to start at shortstop when he joins Vancouver
of the PCL on Monday. "If they want to move me to second that's
fine,'' he said. "However I can get to the big leagues faster.''
... U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan also participated in the A's
batting practice and threw out the first pitch.
Rockies at Mariners
Colorado: 1B Todd Helton returned to the lineup after missing
two games with a strained back and singled in his first at-bat. ...
RHP John Thomson made his first career start against the Mariners.
... Manager Clint Hurdle wants SS Juan Uribe to continue being
aggressive on defense but to stay in control. Hurdle said he
doesn't want to "neuter the man's aggressiveness.'' But Uribe has
17 of the Rockies' 66 errors. Only the New York Mets have more
errors (68) than Colorado in all of baseball. "We need to glove
what we get our hands on. That's what we need to do. We have no
black holes in the infield but we have to be consistent putting
away balls that we glove.''
Seattle: 2B Bret Boone is anxious for the second half of the
season after struggling offensively for much of the first half.
Boone is batting .233 with 11 home runs and 50 RBI. "I feel
better,'' he said. "What's done is done. What's in the books is in
the books. I have to concern myself with the second half.'' ...
Manager Lou Piniella liked how relief RHP Jeff Nelson worked the
ninth in Saturday's 8-1 victory -- Nelson's first appearance since
being reinstated from the DL on Thursday. After one rehab
appearance at Class-A Everett last week, he was pitching for the
Mariners for the first time since May 5. Nelson went on the DL on
May 8 with bone chips in his elbow and then had surgery. "He threw
91-97 (mph) consistently and had a nice break on his slider, and he
threw strikes,'' Piniella said.
Dodgers at Angels
Los Angeles: The Dodgers landed three players on the All-Star
team -- LHP Odalis Perez, closer Eric Gagne and RF Shawn Green, who
finished 14th in the fan balloting among NL outfielders. It's the
first time the Dodgers have had more than two players representing
them since 1995, when they had five. "The Dodgers organization is
going to be well-represented in Milwaukee by a few guys who really
deserve the opportunity to be there,'' said manager Jim Tracy, who
will be one of the coaches. "It's a tribute to what has taken
place here the first half of the season.'' ... Perez, the first
lefty starter to make an All-Star team with the Dodgers since
Fernando Valenzuela in 1986, entered Sunday's outing 9-3 with a
2.33 ERA and a pair of one-hitters to his credit. "I feel blessed.
I've been working hard to do it, and now I can say I'm making the
All-Star Game,'' Perez said. "The All-Star Game is the game where
the superstars go. I'm not going to say I'm a superstar, but I
deserve to be there because I've been working hard.'' ... Green,
whose only other All-Star appearance was in 1999 at Boston, leads
the majors with 22 home runs since May 21 -- including a
record-tying four on May 23 at Milwaukee's Miller Park, the site of
this year's game. "I have a lot of good memories playing in
Milwaukee,'' said Green, who sat out Sunday's game after jamming
his left thumb in a collision with CF Dave Roberts on Saturday. "I
played my first major league game there with Toronto, I hit my
first career home run there, and I had that big game this year
there. A lot of things have happened there, so it's going to be fun
to go back for an All-Star Game.'' ... Gagne, a Montreal native who
never had a save before this season and was demoted to the minors
last year, leads the majors with 29 saves in 30 attempts. He is the
first Quebecois to play in the midsummer classic since Claude
Raymond in the 1960s. "For me, that's the most important thing
because baseball in Montreal is not doing so well right now and
they don't know if they're going to have the Expos next year. I'll
be the first Quebecois to make the All-Star team since Claude
Raymond in the 1960s, so the kids in Montreal need this --
especially if the Expos are leaving.''
Anaheim: A moment of silence was observed before Sunday's game
at Edison Field in memory of Irv Kaze, the Angels' first publicity
director, who died of a heart attack on Saturday night at age 75.
Kaze, who was with the club from 1961-65, also was PR director for
the Yankees in 1981-82, and was a senior adviser with the NFL's
Raiders when they were in Los Angeles. He earned a Super Bowl ring
with Al Davis and an American League championship ring with George
Steinbrenner. ... LF Garret Anderson, the only Angels player named
to the All-Star team, was selected for the first time -- on his 30th
birthday. The nine-year veteran entered Sunday tied for first among
AL outfielders with 59 RBI and was second in hits with 97 --
including 28 doubles. "I know I've kind of played things down a
little bit, but this is something that I'm really excited about,''
Anderson said. "The All-Star Game is something that you watch on
TV as a kid, so being in one is something special. I don't thirst
for the attention, but I'm starting to see myself in a different
light because of the recognition I've gotten.''
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Reds at Cardinals
Cincinnati: Todd Walker, who was 0-for-10 the first two games of
the series, was 4-for-6 in the finale with four RBI. He has two
four-hit games this year, matching a career best. ... Juan
Encarnacion has eight three-hit games and 30 multihit games this
season. ... Reds pitchers have allowed at least one home run in 15
of the last 16 games. The exception was the series opener Friday
night against St. Louis. ... Manager Bob Boone planned to talk with
Russell Branyan, who stood at home plate and watched as his long
fly hit the top of the center-field wall and ended up with a very
long single Saturday night. "That's unacceptable,'' Boone said.
... RHP Elmer Dessens has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six
straight starts but has only two victories in that span.
St. Louis: The six-run lead the Cardinals squandered matched
their season worst. They also let a six-run lead get away May 2
against the Marlins in a 9-6 loss. The six-run first inning matched
their season high, also achieved on June 1 against the Pirates. ...
RHP Mike Timlin walked his first batter in 21 games, a span of 25
innings since May 2, when Russell Branyan was walked intentionally
in the eighth Saturday. ... Eli Marrero hit his seventh home run
Saturday, one more than his previous career best. He's 10-for-10 in
stolen bases, one shy of his career best set in 1999. ... Eduardo
Perez is 3-for-28 as a pinch hitter after singling Saturday. ...
The Cardinals have won 17 of their last 25 at home and are 25-15
overall at Busch Stadium. But they're 2-4 so far in the middle of a
13-game homestand that ends at the All-Star break.
