Injury report

  • Braves RF Gary Sheffield tested his left hamstring before Tuesday's game, shagging fly balls and hitting in the batting cage. Ultimately, he decided not to start for the fifth game in a row. ''I didn't want to chance it,'' he said. ''I felt good. I felt I passed the test. I ran pretty good. I still felt it a little bit.'' Sheffield pulled his hamstring running out a grounder last Wednesday at Montreal. He did make a pinch-hitting appearance in the game.

  • White Sox 3B Jose Valentin did not play Tuesday after a right ankle injury caused him to leave Monday night's game after two innings.

  • Braves LF Chipper Jones had to leave Tuesday night's game after fouling a ball off his right leg. The team said Jones sustained a serious bruise to his upper right calf, but didn't know if he'll be able to play Wednesday.

  • The Braves put 2B Marcus Giles on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday night after he severely sprained his right ankle trying to avoid a tag.

  • Boston 2B Rey Sanchez missed his second straight game with a strained right hamstring. Boston manager Grady Little said Sanchez will probably play Friday in New York.

    Stat of the day
Mariner starter Joel Pineiro has only lost four games as a major leaguer, and three have come against the Devil Rays.

Stat of the day, part duex
The Royals are 7-6 under manager Tony Pena. It marks the first time since Sept. 21, 1995, that a Royals manager has had a record above .500. Bob Boone was in his first season as Royals manager in 1995.

    The last word
"They might get a Triple-A guy for me now. Or maybe a player and a pitching machine."
-- Indians pitcher Chuck Finley, joking about his trade value after his solid start Tuesday night.

  • AMERICAN LEAGUE
    Angels-Royals
Anaheim: The Angels opened a six-game road trip one win shy of tying the club record for wins in the month of May. The Angels were 17-5 entering play Tuesday, the second best 22-game start to any month in team history (19-3 in June 1998). ... The Angels 28-19 start is tied for the fourth best in team history. They started 31-16 in both 1982 and 1989, and were 30-17 in 1970. ... The Angels are 6-12 against the rest of the AL West, 5-1 against the East and 17-6 versus the Central, entering play Tuesday. The Angels swept a three-game series against Kansas City May 20-22 in Anaheim. ... The Angels are hitting .303 during the last 27 games (22-5) after opening the season with a .231 average in the first 20 games (6-14).

Kansas City: The Royals made a couple of roster moves Tuesday. C Brent Mayne was activated from the DL, where he had been since April 30 with back spasms. To make room for Mayne, the Royals optioned C Juan Brito to Double-A Wichita. Mayne returns with an average of .200 (11-for-55). Pitcher Blake Stein was placed on the DL with a slight tear of the left groin muscle. Brad Voyles was called up from Triple-A Omaha, where he was 1-1 with five saves and an ERA of 1.56 in 14 games. He appeared in three games (5.40 ERA in 3 1-3 innings) with Kansas City this season. Also, pitcher Chris George was sent to Omaha on a rehab assignment. He is expected to throw 65-to-70 pitches in his next start at Omaha. George has been on the DL since May 17 with a split fingernail on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

    Red Sox-Blue Jays
Boston: Manager Grady Little said 2B Rey Sanchez, who missed Monday's game with a strained right hamstring, probably won't play Tuesday or Wednesday. ''It looks like he'll be ready to play Friday in New York,'' Little said. Sanchez left Sunday night's game in the seventh inning with the injury. ... Little said Manny Ramirez, who is on the 15-day DL a broken finger, won't return to the lineup until mid June. He said Ramirez won't be going on a rehab assignment. ''Everything is going well with Manny,'' Little said. ... RHP Rich Garces, who entered Tuesday's game with a 9.24 ERA in 15 games, will be changing his pitching pattern. ''He's been too consistent in his patterns and his location,'' Little said. Little said Garces has lost some confidence. ''He feels like he's letting the team down.'' ... 3B Shea Hillenbrand will be given a day off Wednesday. Thursday is an off day for the Red Sox. ''That should last him for a couple of months,'' Little said. ''If he keeps playing like he's playing he might not get much of an All-Star break.'' Hillenbrand entered Tuesday's game hitting .326 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI. ... Rookie IF/OF Bryant Nelson will play third Wednesday. ''That's a position he's probably played the most in his life,'' Little said. ''I got to check the book to see if he's telling the truth.''

Toronto: RHP Pete Walker made his first major league start. Walker was claimed off waivers from the Mets on May 3 and has been used a reliever. ... Manager Buck Martinez said before the game that he wanted his team to swing at Pedro Martinez's first pitch. ''The league is hitting .500 against him on the first pitch,'' Martinez said. ''You have to be aggressive. You can't spot him too many good pitches. He's been on a roll.''

    Athletics-Orioles
Oakland: LHP Mark Mulder started Tuesday's opener of a two-game series at Camden Yards, bumping RHP Eric Hiljus back to Wednesday. Mulder, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, is making his first start on normal rest since returning from a stint on the DL with a strained left forearm. ''For him to want to do it is as good a sign as anything else,'' manager Art Howe said. ... Hiljus has frequently been bounced or skipped from starts to keep the A's top three starters on five day's rest. Howe is pleased with how Hiljus has handled the erratic schedule, but hopes he's learning from it. ''That's what fifth starters do,'' Howe said. ''That's why you don't want to be a fifth starter. That's your incentive to be the third or fourth starter.'' ... Howe admits that he hadn't seen much of rookie 2B Esteban German until he arrived in Oakland during last week's roster shuffle. The five games German has played has opened Howe's eyes. ''He's got the quickness and speed can do a lot of things for you,'' Howe said. ''He gets on base and covers a lot of ground defensively. He's got a high energy level.'' Oakland entered Tuesday's game last in the AL with 10 stolen bases. ... RHP Cory Lidle returned unscathed from his rehabilitation start for Triple-A Sacramento in Oklahoma City. Howe said Lidle would be activated to start this weekend in Tampa Bay.

Baltimore: RHP Travis Driskill will start Saturday against Seattle, Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. It will be the second major-league start for the 30-year-old rookie, who allowed one run in six innings against the Mariners in his starting debut last weekend. ... RHP Jason Johnson (fractured finger) threw 45 pitches in an extended spring training game in Florida on Monday and could return after his next rehab start. ... 2B Jerry Hairston, who lost his starting job to Brian Roberts, intends to wait patiently to get it back. ''These things are out of my hands. All I can do is be ready when called upon,'' he said. ... Melvin Mora stole his team-high 11th base in the first inning Tuesday.

    Tigers-Indians
Detroit: Still slightly hurting, DH Dmitri Young returned to the Tigers' lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Indians. Young sat out Monday's game after reaggravating a hernia injury that landed him on the DL last month. ''I tweaked it taking grounders,'' Young said. ''I wish all this would go away and I could just play.'' ... RHP Jeff Weaver entered Tuesday night's game having not allowed a home run in 71 innings this season. Weaver and Boston's Derek Lowe (72 1-3 innings) were the only AL regular starters yet to give up a homer. Their streaks are the longest to open a season since Heathcliff Slocumb also went 72 1-3 innings without yielding a homer in 1994. Since 1990, only Cincinnati's Jack Armstrong (76 1-3) and Milwaukee Cal Eldred (75 1-3) have had longer streaks. ... The Tigers came into Tuesday night's game having turned 16 double plays in their last 10 games after turning just 20 in their first 38 games.

Cleveland: OF Milton Bradley is a step closer to rejoining the Indians. Bradley, who broke a bone near his left eye when a ball ricocheted off the outfield wall and hit him on May 1, began a 20-day rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday. Indians manager Charlie Manuel said the 24-year-old could be up in a week. Bradley, acquired last July in a trade with Montreal, was batting .266 with two homers and five RBI with the Indians when he got hurt. ... RHP Jaret Wright pitched two pain-free innings during an extended spring training game in Winter Haven, Fla., on Monday as he continues his comeback from shoulder surgeries. Wright went on the DL in March with tightness in his right shoulder which has undergone two operations in the past year. He will pitch again on Friday. ... Slumping OF Russell Branyan was back in the lineup after getting Monday off. Branyan has 58 strikeouts in 140 at-bats this season, and is on pace to strike out 207 times. Bobby Bonds holds the major league record of 189. In addition, Branyan is batting just .107 (3-for-28) with runners in scoring position and has struck out 19 times in those situations.

    Mariners-Devil Rays
Seattle: RHP Jeff Nelson said he will play catch for the first time Friday since undergoing surgery May 10 to remove bone chips from his right elbow. ... RHP Paul Abbott (right shoulder) threw in a simulated game. Manager Lou Piniella said Abbott will throw again later this week when the Mariners are in Baltimore and should begin a rehab assignment early next week. ... Piniella said DH Edgar Martinez (left knee) -- who is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list June 11 -- will likely go on a two or three day rehab assignment when he is ready to return. ''We don't have to rush him,'' Piniella said. ''We want to get him totally healthy.''

Tampa Bay: DH Aubrey Huff, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham, missed the first three weeks of the season with a fractured cheekbone under his left eye. ''It's still a little sensitive to light,'' Huff said. ''Another month and it will be completely healed.'' ... RF Ben Grieve was back in the lineup after missing the past five games with a left thumb injury. ... GM Chuck LaMar said minor league OF Carl Crawford (ribs) should resume playing for Triple-A Durham late this week. Considered one of the team's top prospects, Crawford is hitting .350 at Durham. ... LHP Wilson Alvarez (ribs) could be activated from the 15-day DL Friday.

    Twins-Rangers
Minnesota: RHP Brad Radke is expected to be activated from the 15-day DL for a return to the rotation on Thursday against Anaheim. Radke has been out since May 14 with a pulled right groin. ...INF Luis Rivas will begin a rehab assignment this week in Florida. Rivas has been sidelined since April 6 with a broken bone in his left wrist.

Texas: The team hopes C Ivan Rodriguez can begin a rehab assignment later this week. The 10-time All-Star has been on the DL since April 15 with a herniated disc in his back. Rodriguez was due to be examined by team medical director Dr. John Conway Tuesday, and if Conway gave the OK, Rodriguez could begin a minor league assignment as soon as Wednesday. ... RF Juan Gonzalez got his first stolen base on Monday night after getting his first homer and RBI Sunday in Kansas City. Gonzalez also registered his first outfield assist of the season on Monday night against the Twins.

    Yankees-White Sox
New York: With two home runs Monday, the Yankees now lead the majors with 84. ''I kidded with them yesterday after the meeting,'' manager Joe Torre said. ''I said, 'I'm going to tell you again, you're not a home run-hitting team.' They play me like an accordion, anyway. But they understand what I mean. I just don't want to sit back and rely on home runs. ... That stuff goes into slumps. But if you work your at-bats, that stuff doesn't go into slumps.'' ... CF Bernie Williams has a pregame workout routine that would exhaust most people. Williams, who needed cortisone shots in both shoulders in April because of soreness, comes in early for stretching and strengthening exercises, then gets his shoulders warmed up. After batting practice, more heat is occasionally applied to his shoulders. ''I miss those days of coming in here five minutes before stretching,'' Williams said. ''It's probably one of those things I'll have to do all year.'' But Williams said he doubts he'll need offseason surgery. ... 2B Alfonso Soriano was back in the lineup Tuesday after missing Monday's game with a stiff left hip flexor. ''He says he feels nothing, absolutely nothing,'' Torre said. ''If there was any hint of anything, he wasn't going to play.'' ... LHP Randy Keisler, bitten by a rattlesnake earlier this month, has resumed onfield drills at the Yankees' minor complex in Tampa, Fla. ... RHP Orlando Hernandez (upper back) is running and doing flexibility exercises as part of his rehab program. He'll throw off flat ground beginning Wednesday. ''Once he's ready to start throwing, they'll put a program together,'' Torre said.

Chicago: 3B Jose Valentin was out of the lineup Tuesday with a sprained right ankle. Valentin injured himself while chasing a foul ball Monday. ''It's just a minor sprain,'' Valentin said. ''The X-rays showed nothing, so it's day by day.'' ... Manager Jerry Manuel said there's a possibility Frank Thomas could be moved back to his old No. 3 spot, but there's no need to do it now. Dropped to the No. 5 spot May 11, Thomas is tied for third in the AL with 41 RBI. ''I don't think right now is the right time,'' Manuel said of moving Thomas. ''I think he is somewhat comfortable in that spot and it is a good spot to be in, with all the RBI opportunities he has.'' ... There was another big turnout at Comiskey Park on Tuesday night. Monday night's game drew 43,781, the largest of the season. ''We'd like to perform better than we did,'' Manuel said. ''Not only is it important for the team, but it's important for the South Side. To finally get fans in, we need to perform well.'' ... Monday's loss gave Chicago back-to-back losses at home for the first time this season.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE
    Reds-Marlins
Cincinnati: Tuesday's game was the 600th in the managerial career of Bob Boone. He is 95-117 with the Reds and 276-323 overall, including a three-season stint at Kansas City from 1995-97. ... OF Ken Griffey Jr. started consecutive games for the first time since coming off the disabled list on Friday. Griffey played that night against Atlanta, sat on Saturday, and started in the series finale Sunday. Despite missing most of the season with a knee injury, Griffey is ninth among National League outfielders in early All Star balloting with 54,927 votes.

Florida: OF Kevin Millar was activated from the disabled list. To make room, infielder Pablo Ozuna was optioned to Triple-A Calgary. Millar went on the disabled list May 4 after sustaining a left abdominal oblique strain. He recently completed a three-game rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Portland. ... The Marlins have been at the top spot or within two games of the Eastern Division lead for the past 23 days.

    Cubs-Pirates
Chicago: RHP Jon Lieber, who starts Wednesday, is 7-0 with a 2.68 ERA in 10 games against the Pirates, his former team. However, he is currently on a three-game losing streak, his first since dropping four in a row in 2000. He beat the Pirates 5-1 on April 14. ... Moises Alou, 0-for-5 in the Cubs' 3-2, 10-inning loss Monday to Pittsburgh, didn't start Tuesday as his average uncharacteristically hovered in the .170s. Alou said, ''I'm not going to give up. I'm too good of a hitter to keep embarrassing myself like this.'' Alou is in the first year of a $27 million, three-year contract. ... Manager Don Baylor said he expects Juan Cruz (1-7) to rejoin the rotation, but isn't saying when. Currently, Jason Bere is the No. 5 starter, and will keep that job at least temporarily after pitching six scoreless innings Sunday against Houston. After Bere left leading 5-0, the Cubs' bullpen was roughed up in what became a 7-5 loss.

Pittsburgh: 2B Pokey Reese missed a second consecutive start Tuesday with a sore right index finger, but is expected to miss no more than one more start. ... Right-handed reliever Josias Manzanillo (arthroscopic elbow surgery) wants to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment this weekend, but trainer Kent Biggerstaff first wants to see how he bounces back from a two-inning simulated outing Tuesday. ... LHP Dave Williams had shoulder inflammation during a run of five consecutive winless starts, but didn't immediately tell trainers of the problem. That lack of candidness was one of the reasons for manager Lloyd McClendon's long talk with Williams before the left-hander shut out the Cubs for 5 2-3 innings in a 3-2 Pirates victory Monday night. It was his longest outing in nearly a month. McClendon said Williams was cleared by team doctors and will remain in the rotation unless the inflammation returns. ... The planned development between Heinz Field and PNC Park announced Tuesday by the Steelers and Pirates would eliminate most of the 3,000 paved parking spots between the stadiums. But, considering how successful the Pirates have been in selling fans on parking in low-priced downtown lots and then walking to PNC Park, they don't expect a negative affect on attendance. Steelers vice president Art Rooney II said underground parking at the planned development is expected to make up all or most of the lots currently in place. The lots were planned all along to be temporary. The Pirates and Steelers are focusing on attracting the kind of development -- apartments, restaurants, retail stores, offices -- that was supposed to occur in the 1970s at Three Rivers Stadium but never did.

    Phillies-Mets

Philadelphia: The Phillies entered 4-21 on the road, worst in the majors. They are 16-9 at home. ... Manager Larry Bowa was back in the dugout after serving a three-game suspension for his May 17 run-in with umpire Tony Randazzo. ... The acquisition of Jeremy Giambi from Oakland last Wednesday is forcing Bowa to make some decisions about playing time. Giambi figures to see plenty of action at first base in place of slumping Travis Lee, but Bowa has no set plan. ''Split it up. I'm just going to wing it,'' Bowa said. ''Right now we need some offense. This kid has come in and given us a jump. It's a tough situation because Travis is a very good defensive player and, when he's on his game, he's a good offensive player, too.'' Giambi, who homered in his first two plate appearances with Philadelphia on Saturday, started at first base Tuesday night. Bowa said he will also occasionally spell LF Pat Burrell and RF Bobby Abreu. ... LHP Dan Plesac, 40, joined the Phillies after being traded by Toronto for RHP Cliff Politte on Sunday. Plesac's job out of the bullpen is clear: to get dangerous left-handed hitters out in crucial, late-inning situations. The NL East is filled with them, including New York's Mo Vaughn and Jeromy Burnitz, and Florida's Cliff Floyd. ''I think he's a great situational pitcher,'' Bowa said. ''We've had some trouble with left-handed hitters. This guy's had a history of being successful against some big-time left-handed hitters, so I think he's going to help out.''

New York: RHP Steve Trachsel came in 5-0 with a 2.01 ERA in his last six starts against the Phillies. ... OF Roger Cedeno, bothered by a sore right ankle, was not in the lineup for the second consecutive game. He is expected to be ready to play Wednesday night. ... With Cedeno out, Roberto Alomar batted leadoff and Edgardo Alfonzo moved up from the fifth spot to No. 2. With a .431 on-base percentage but only one home run and 13 RBI, Alfonzo seems a better fit near the top of the lineup. ... The Mets came in leading the majors with a 3.06 ERA. ... Helio Castroneves, who won his second straight Indy 500 on Sunday, threw out the first pitch.

    Expos-Braves
Montreal: RHP Britt Reames made his first start of the year after 23 appearances as a reliever. Reames filled the spot normally held by Bruce Chen, who has been sent to the bullpen to work out his problems. Chen, who is 2-3 with a 5.23 ERA, was acquired from the New York Mets early in the season after going through spring training as a reliever. Expos manager Frank Robinson believes the left-hander is simply going through a dead-arm period because he wasn't conditioned to work as a starter. The Expos intend to move Chen back into the rotation as soon as his velocity improves. ... Montreal has struggled to find a consistent leadoff hitter. Seven different players have filled the role already this season, compared with eight all of last year. CF Jose Macias made his fourth start at the top of the order, even though he was hitting just .185. Peter Bergeron started the year in the leadoff spot, but he was optioned to Ottawa with a .187 average.

Atlanta: RF Gary Sheffield tested his left hamstring before the game, shagging fly balls and hitting in the batting cage. Coming into Tuesday night's game, he had made only one pinch-hitting appearance since the injury. ''I don't expect it to just automatically go away,'' Sheffield said. ''But I felt like I can track down fly balls, score from second, things like that. So we're just going to give it another day.'' Sheffield has been plagued by injuries this season, missing seven straight games in late April with a sore wrist. ... OF George Lombard, who missed two months of the season with a strained right calf muscle, began a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Greenville of the Southern League. Lombard was one of the team's most impressive players in spring training, but hurt his calf just two weeks before the season opener.

    Cardinals-Astros
St. Louis: Tony La Russa's impression of Matt Morris is the same now as it was the first time he saw him as a budding star six years ago. ''You see him the first time and just say 'wow,''' La Russa said. ''He had a perfect delivery and real good life on his stuff. Then you start talking to guys in the organization and they tell you what kind of competitor he is. You realize you're seeing someone who is special.'' Fast forward to this season. ''He's really special,'' La Russa said. ''One of the neat things about Matt is that he really wants to improve. He's looking for ways to get better. You'll see him improve his third pitch. He'll use it more.''

Houston: On Wednesday, Wade Miller will make his first start since April 12 when he went on the disabled list with a pinched nerve in his neck. Manager Jimy Williams can't wait. ''I don't want to put pressure on Wade, I'm just anxious to see him pitch,'' Williams said. ''He started a couple of games for us in April and we saw what kind of stuff he had in spring training. If he takes that into the game, it gives us a chance to win.'' Miller is eager to get back into the rotation, too. ''I can throw all my pitches,'' Miller said. ''I'm not going to overexert myself but I'm not going to hold back. I might be a little rusty but it's better than my first bullpen start.'' Miller threw 80 pitches in his last rehab assignment at Triple-A New Orleans. Williams said he could throw close to 100 pitches against the Cardinals.

    Rockies-Padres
Colorado: LHP Denny Neagle said he'll be OK to make his scheduled start Thursday against Padres RHP Bobby Jones. Neagle left Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants after being hit on the left knee by a line drive by Benito Santiago. The liner struck Neagle with two outs in the fourth inning. The left-hander scrambled to the ball and threw out Santiago to end the inning, then was helped to the dugout by two teammates.

San Diego: Manager Bruce Bochy said it's more than likely that struggling rookie 3B Sean Burroughs will be sent down to Triple-A Portland on Thursday when RHP Bobby Jones comes off the disabled list. Bochy said Burroughs, 21, would stay at Triple-A ''until he gets his game back. I just think he needs to get down there and get a little more relaxed atmosphere.'' Burroughs' average has dropped to .223. ... Rookie Ramon Vazquez started at 2B and will form a platoon with D'Angelo Jimenez. Vazquez is a left-hander, so he'll start against righties and Jimenez will play against lefties. Vazquez was obtained in a six-player trade with Seattle in December. ''He deserves an opportunity,'' Bochy said. ''He hasn't had a chance to show what he can do.'' Vazquez has made one start at 2B and 12 at SS. ... Phil Nevin has committed two errors in two games at 3B since he came off the disabled list on Monday.

    Brewers-Dodgers
Milwaukee: Even without the seven home runs they've surrendered to the Dodgers' Shawn Green, the 59 the Brewers have allowed to everyone else through Monday would still be the highest total in the NL by one over San Diego. ... After lifting his average 23 points to .199 with nine hits in 28 at-bats during the Brewers' recent homestand, 2B Eric Young went 3-for-5 Monday in the opener of a six-game road trip. ''This is the first time in my career I've gotten off to a start like the one I'd had, so that's something that I have to make an adjustment to,'' said Young, who entered this season with a .278 career average through April and May. ''I used to be able to get out of a funk a lot quicker. This one's taking a little longer. But the thing I've been proud about is my defense. So I figure, if I can't get any hits, I might as well take them away.'' ... The Brewers entered Tuesday with a major league-worst 2-15 record in one-run decisions, including six straight one-run losses. Last season they were 13-25. In 1-0 games, they have dropped eight in a row.

Los Angeles: To no one's surprise, Shawn Green was named Tuesday as NL player of the week after posting nine home runs, 17 RBI and a .593 average (16-for-27). Green tied a major league record with four homers on May 23 at Milwaukee -- and had 19 total bases that day to break Joe Adcock's big-league mark by one. Green was the first player ever to have six hits, six RBI and six runs scored in the same game. ... RHP Kevin Brown underwent an MRI exam Tuesday that showed no tear in the surgically repaired elbow that has landed him on the DL for the second time this season. Dr. Frank Jobe has prescribed heat, ice and medication as treatment -- but no cortisone shot because that could cause softness to the cartilage. Manager Jim Tracy said there is no timetable for Brown's return. ... Tracy has shuffled his rotation for the weekend series against Arizona because he wants to throw at least two lefties against the Diamondbacks. Omar Daal, pitching in Brown's spot for the third time this season, will go Friday -- followed by RHP Andy Ashby and Kazuhisa Ishii. ... LHP Jesse Orosco said he expects to be activated Wednesday, when he is eligible to come off the DL. Orosco, who strained his oblique muscle during batting practice, said he will no longer take BP. ''There's just no sense in it,'' Orosco said. ... LHP Terry Mulholland, sidelined since May 3 because of a strained lower back, threw 47 pitches Tuesday in a simulated game and came out of it all right, according to Tracy. His return is still up in the air.

    Diamondbacks-Giants
Arizona: The Diamondbacks recalled RHP Bret Prinz from Triple-A Tucson and designated RHP Jose Parra for assignment. Prinz appeared in 11 games with the Diamondbacks earlier this season, going 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA. He allowed six runs on eight hits over 6 1-3 total innings. Parra was 0-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 16 appearances for the Diamondbacks. ... Going into Tuesday night's game against the San Francisco Giants, the Diamondbacks had not homered in three straight games, their longest drought of the season. Arizona and San Francisco are tied for the NL lead with 58 homers each. ... The Diamondbacks have just 24 errors, the fewest in the majors. They have just four errors in their last 15 games.

San Francisco: Going into Tuesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Barry Bonds needed just one more home run to tie Frank Robinson for fourth place on the career list with 586. His next target after Robinson is godfather Willie Mays, who hit 660. ... On May 28, 1957, the Giants and Dodgers received unanimous approval from the other National League teams to move from New York to the West Coast. ... Benito Santiago was back in the fifth place in the batting order after clubbing three doubles and driving in four runs Monday.
