San Francisco's Ryan Jensen. The starter (4-4) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in five innings in a 10-6 loss to the Rockies.

    Stat of the day
Jose Vidro went 4-for-4 to extend his major league-best hitting streak to 20 games as the Expos beat the Phillies 6-5. He doubled in his first two at-bats, singled and hit a two-out RBI single.

    The last word
"Everyone was disappointed. He was like a father figure.''
-- Toronto's Luke Prokopec on Dan Plesac, who was traded to Philadelphia before the game.

  • AMERICAN LEAGUE
    Indians-Blue Jays
Cleveland: Starter Bartolo Colon dedicated his four-hitter to his mother. Sunday is Mother's Day in the Dominican Republic. ... Colon's wife gave birth to a boy last week. Colon left the team to witness the birth. ... Colon recorded his 14th career complete game. ... The Indians swept the Blue Jays for the first time since Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2000.

Toronto: LHP Dan Plesac, traded to Philadelphia before the game, joked that he won't miss LHP Scott Eyre, who Plesac says talks too much in the bullpen. "Some days he drives me nuts,'' Plesac said. "Scotty was talking my ear off and in about the fourth inning of a game recently so I picked up the phone and I called the manager and said, 'Buck, you either have to put me in now or put him in now because I can't stand it anymore.''' ... Plesac also said he was glad he doesn't have to face former Oakland OF Jeremy Giambi, who was acquired by the Phillies last week. "Jeremy Giambi just got traded there, which is good for me since he's 3-for-4 with three homers off me. I don't have to face him anymore. That will be nice. I'm going to have to ask him what the secret is,'' Plesac said ... OF Shannon Stewart, who started in left on Saturday, returned to DH.

    Rangers-Royals
Texas: SS Alex Rodriguez committed just his third error of the year when he bobbled Mark Quinn's bases-loaded ground ball that let in two runs in the opener. Texas had three errors in the first game while Kansas City had two. ... The Rangers are scheduled to play two more doubleheaders, including at Kansas City on July 15. That would make three, the most since they played four in 1993.

Kansas City: Chuck Knoblauch snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a leadoff single in the second game of the doubleheader. ... Mark Quinn's homer in the nightcap made him the major league leader among players whose last name starts with "Q.'' He had been tied with Texas bullpen coach Jamie Quirk with 43. ... The Royals tied a team record, accomplished twice previously, with four stolen bases in the third inning of the nightcap.

    Devil Rays-Athletics
Tampa Bay: LHP Wilson Alvarez, on the disabled list since April 15 with a right rib strain, pitched five innings for Double-A Orlando on Saturday night and got the victory after allowing a run on four hits with a walk and strikeout. Orlando beat Greenville 5-4. It was Alvarez's third rehab outing. ... INF Aubrey Huff, the first position player drafted by the Devil Rays to reach the majors, has hit in 26 of his 31 games at Triple-A Durham.

Oakland: LHP Mike Magnante can breath a little easier after the A's designated LHP Mike Holtz for reassignment on Saturday. Magnante carries a team high 7.90 ERA and could have been the odd man out in the bullpen when RHP Aaron Harang was called up to pitch. "There is a sigh of relief,'' said Magnante. "Holtzie and I were expecting this from the beginning of spring training.'' General manager Billy Beane said Magnante's service with the team was a consideration. Magnante is in his third year with the team. Holtz was obtained over the last offseason. "I never thought I'd say we had too many lefties,'' said A's manager Art Howe. "But we did. It was pretty obvious these months.'' ... DH Scott Hatteberg was out of the lineup on Sunday because the Devil Rays were using a left-handed pitcher. OF Eric Byrnes took his place, with OF Jermaine Dye moving to DH. ... Dye changed his locker in Oakland, moving into the space once occupied by Jeremy Giambi and Jason Giambi before that. "More room over here,'' said Dye. ... OF David Justice, on the DL with a strained groin, is expected to miss at least another week.

    Tigers-White Sox
Detroit: Manager Luis Pujols said that the rehab of 2B Damion Easley, who has a pulled muscle in his left side, has been going well. Easley played nine innings for Triple-A Toledo on Saturday and reported no problems with an injury that has kept him out of all but six games with the Tigers this season. Easley is 0-for-8 with two walks in three games for Toledo. "It's a matter of is he able to come up here and swing the bat?'' Pujols said. "There's no problem with the muscle.'' ... Pujols said the plan for RHP Danny Patterson is to have him available by Friday. Patterson, who has been out since April 4 with right elbow soreness, is expected to pitch Sunday and Monday for Toledo, marking the first back-to-back efforts of his stint. If all goes well then, and again Wednesday, Pujols said the team will activate Patterson for the club's three-game series against the Blue Jays at Comerica Park. ... C Brandon Inge finished his rehab assignment and will join the team Monday. Pujols said Inge should get most of the playing time behind the plate. Mike Rivera was sent to Toledo to make room.

Chicago: DH Frank Thomas is looking forward to seeing former teammate Robin Ventura, even though he said the two haven't spoken since Ventura left 3½ years ago. Ventura and the New York Yankees visit Comiskey Park for a three-game set starting Monday, marking the first time Ventura has competed at Comiskey since signing as a free agent with the Mets after the 1998 season. The two had been teammates since 1990. "It's been weird. With him in New York, he really just disappeared. It's kind of sad because he's the one player I played with the longest, and I thought I would retire with him. But things worked out differently. My ex-wife and his wife were good friends, with the kids and everything, but once I got divorced, I kind of cut that off. We just did our separate things and we didn't stay in touch. We'll be fine seeing each other. He's still one of my all-time favorites,'' Thomas said. ... Thomas also said he's got no problems with Yankees LHP David Wells, who as a teammate last season criticized Thomas for not playing through pain, before it was revealed Thomas had torn his triceps. "There's no harsh feelings about what he said. It was done as a teammate and it was done as motivation, but he was wrong about the facts. I know what it was aimed at,'' Thomas said.

    Orioles-Mariners
Baltimore: Manager Mike Hargrove said he has not lost confidence in 23-year-old closer Jorge Julio. Hargrove used Buddy Groom to finish Saturday's 3-2 win rather than Julio in a save situation. Groom went the final 1 2-3 innings and earned his first save and opportunity. "Jorge is not Dennis Eckersley,'' Hargrove said. "He's got good stuff and in some point in time he may be as good as Dennis Eckersley.'' ... SS Mike Bordick is relieved the Orioles finally won a game at Safeco Field. They broke an 0-for-14 losing streak in the stadium Saturday to win their first game at Safeco. They had lost 15 straight in Seattle. "It was very important,'' Bordick said. "Hopefully one leads to two. The Mariners have been tough ever since they came to this ballpark. It's good to take one away and hopefully a couple years down the road we'll be able to even it up.''

Seattle: Ichiro Suzuki played designated hitter and Chris Snelling started in right field. Snelling, 20, was called up Friday night from Double-A San Antonio. He was 0-for-3 in his major league debut Saturday. It was Suzuki's first appearance of the season as DH. He was 6-for-17 (.353) at DH last season. ... 3B Jeff Cirillo was not in the lineup for the second time in five games. Manager Lou Piniella benched Cirillo on Wednesday for baserunning mistakes. Cirillo had a closed-door meeting with Piniella before Sunday's game. Neither would discuss about the meeting. Cirillo, trying to tie the game, was thrown out at the plate in the eighth inning of Seattle's 3-2 loss Saturday. He said he is having trouble adjusting to his new team after being traded from the Colorado Rockies. ... Seattle's bullpen had not allowed a run in eight games going into Sunday's game. The relievers had pitched 23 2-3 scoreless innings.

    Twins-Angels
Minnesota: CF Torii Hunter, who won his first Gold Glove last year, committed his first error of the season Sunday after his diving attempt on Juan Nieves' single was ruled a trap. As Hunter held up his glove to show the umpire, the ball squirted away from him as he reached into his glove for it and Nieves took an extra base. ... Reliever Mike Jackson has stranded all 11 baserunners he has inherited, but all six runners Jack Cressend has inherited have scored. ... RHP Mike Trombley has not pitched for the Twins since May 18, the day after he surrendered a game-winning grand slam by Jason Giambi in the 14th-inning of a 13-12 loss at Yankee Stadium. Trombley, who pitched in no fewer than 67 games during the previous five seasons, warmed up during each game of the three-game weekend series at Anaheim.

Anaheim: Manager Mike Scioscia is one of only seven former first-round draft picks to manage in the majors -- and played more games (1,141) in the big leagues than any of the other six. The list includes Terry Francona (708), Bobby Valentine (639), Clint Hurdle (515), John Mizerock (103), Charlie Manuel (96) and Gene Lamont (87). Mizerock guided Kansas City on an interim basis for 13 games in-between between the firing of Tony Muser and the hiring of Tony Pena. "I was absolutely shocked when I got the phone call that I was the 19th player picked in the country that year,'' said Scioscia, who was selected by the Dodgers in 1976 and ended up as their all-time leader in games caught. "I had already committed to a scholarship to play at Clemson, but things changed quickly after that. But I certainly never took anything for granted, being a number one draft pick, and I also never took it for granted that playing in the major leagues was going to make you better equipped to manage. I think it just proves that once you're in this game, you have to earn your way.''

    Yankees-Red Sox
New York: LHP Andy Pettitte made his second rehabilitation start, pitching for Class-A Tampa against Sarasota, a Red Sox farm team. He threw 34 pitches and struck out two in three innings. He allowed no runs, hits or walks. The Yankees plan to use Pettitte, on the disabled list with a left elbow strain, Friday for Tampa and once more before rejoining the major league team. ... The Yankees entered 29-0 when leading after eight innings. ... Ron Coomer, whose only appearance in the previous five games was as a pinch-hitter against Boston on Thursday night, started at third base. ... Alfonso Soriano's five homers leading off a game are tied for fifth in Yankees history. Rickey Henderson, now with the Red Sox, leads with nine.

Boston: Patriots coach Bill Belichick attended the game. ... Several Red Sox players, including RHP Derek Lowe, went to Saturday night's NBA playoff game won by the Celtics 94-90 over the New Jersey Nets with the biggest comeback from a fourth-quarter deficit in NBA playoff history. ... DH Carlos Baerga started his third straight game for the first time this season. His 11th-inning sacrifice fly gave Boston a 9-8 win Friday. ... Red Sox starter Darren Oliver walked 12 in his previous three starts after walking just six in his other five.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE
    Phillies-Expos
Philadelphia: Philadelphia lost all three games under bench coach Gary Varsho, who replaced suspended manager Larry Bowa for the game. The Phillies have lost 21 of 25 road games this season. "Obviously, I was hoping for a much better weekend,'' Varsho said. Bowa, who watched all three games from a booth in the press box, was suspended by baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson on Thursday for his May 17 run-in with umpire Tony Randazzo. ... The Phillies acquired LHP Dan Plesac from Toronto before the game for RHP Cliff Politte. Plesac was 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 19 games for the Blue Jays this season. "We think it's a significant move bringing in that kind of left-hander,'' Phillies assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We think he can help us close some games and obviously we've had some problems with the back end of games.'' Politte was 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 13 games this season.

Montreal: After hitting a game-winning grand slam on Saturday, 2B Jose Vidro went 4-for-4 in Sunday's 6-5 comeback win to extend his major league-best hitting streak to 20 games. Vidro is 35-for-83 (.422) over the course of the streak, including seven doubles, two homers and 18 RBI. ... Vladimir Guerrero's RBI single capped a four-run rally in the seventh as the Expos overcame a late-inning deficit for the third straight game. Montreal has won five of 22 when trailing after six innings. ... The Expos wore their 1970 uniforms, including the distinctive red, white and blue cap the team wore from 1969-91, as part of a "Turn Back the Clock'' promotion. A crowd of 19,015 -- the third-largest Olympic Stadium crowd this season -- was on hand as former Expos Mack Jones, Ron Hunt, Ellis Valentine and Claude Raymond, the team's current roving coach, threw out ceremonial first pitches along with Ron Piche, who was on the team's coaching staff in 1976. Montreal will bring back a version of the uniform it wore from 1980-91 for a game against New York on Sept. 15.

    Marlins-Mets
Florida: Luis Castillo singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest this season for the Marlins. ... Preston Wilson had two hits, giving him an eight-game hitting streak against the team that originally drafted him in 1992. Wilson is 11-for-31 against New York over that span. ... Mike Lowell now has 20 multihit games, tops on the Marlins. ... The Marlins lead NL in stolen bases with 58 steals. ... Florida complete a 14-game road trip Monday, the longest in team history.

New York: Slumping slugger Mo Vaughn was back in the lineup Sunday but was hitting sixth, the first time he has hit in that spot since 1993. ... Vaughn has hit just one home run in his last 12 games. ... With his two-run double in the first inning, Mike Piazza now has 27 RBI in the last 35 games in which he has had at least one at bat. ... The Mets are hitting only .211 against left-handers this season and .252 against right-handers. ... Manager Bobby Valentine used 37 batting orders in the first 50 games and has used nine different hitters in the No. 2 spot.

    Cardinals-Pirates
St. Louis: Darryl Kile will make his second straight start against Houston and Roy Oswalt on Monday. Kile doesn't have a decision in his three starts against Houston despite a 2.65 ERA. He had a no-decision Wednesday in a 3-2 St. Louis victory, allowing two runs in six innings. ... LHP Rick Ankiel is still unable to throw breaking balls, which means his timetable for going on a rehabilitation assignment is uncertain. He has been recovering from elbow tendinitis and a flexor injury since March. ... The Cardinals are 7-4 against left-handed starters despite a .225 average against them. ... The Cardinals are 16-8 in May.

Pittsburgh: The Pirates have the No. 1 overall pick in the June 4-5 draft for the first time since taking RHP Kris Benson in 1996. GM Dave Littlefield said Sunday the Pirates have narrowed their choice to four prospects, but remain undecided. Unlike past years, when some picks had asking prices the Pirates couldn't afford, Littlefield is confident that all four fit their budget. ... 1B Kevin Young, hitless in 10 at-bats and his average down to .189 did not start Sunday against St. Louis. Young is hitting .189 (10-for-53) in May after hitting .188 (13-for-69) in April. He is in the third year of a $24 million, four-year contract. ... However, the Pirates haven't set a timetable for his return. ... More unbalanced schedule quirks: The Pirates have yet to play the Braves, Marlins, Expos or Giants, but are about to play their fourth series against the Cubs. After this week's four-game series is over, the Cubs and Pirates will have met 13 times, but their final six meetings won't come until the final two weekends of the season. ... The Pirates didn't have a rain delay for the first time in their five Sunday home dates.

    Reds-Braves
Cincinnati: CF Ken Griffey Jr. went 0-for-4 in his second start since a seven-week stint on the DL, but he flashed some of the skill that helped him win 10 gold gloves. In the second, Atlanta's Wes Helms lined a hit into left-center. With Helms obviously thinking about a double, Griffey raced over into the gap and slid on one knee to keep the ball from rolling to the wall. Helms stopped with a single. "It's the first time I've slid,'' Griffey said. ... OF Austin Kearns hit a ninth-inning home run off John Smoltz but remains in a 4-for-30 slump. With Griffey off the disabled list, Kearns will lose some playing time. "Everybody goes through periods when you feel great and when you struggle,'' he said. "I don't feel any pressure.''

Atlanta: RHP Greg Maddux, hit on his nonthrowing wrist in batting practice Saturday, wore a bandage to the mound at the start of the game. But umpire Mike Reilly made Maddux remove it before throwing his first pitch. ... LF Chipper Jones made a sliding attempt to catch Adam Dunn's foul ball in the first inning. The ball bounced off the warning track and hit Jones in the face. On the next pitch, Dunn hit a sharp grounder off the leg of 1B Wes Helms. Helms chased the ball down and threw out Dunn. ... RF Darren Bragg started his third straight game in place of Gary Sheffield, who's limited with a strained hamstring.

Houston: Dave Mlicki was expected to be placed on the DL but the club was holding off to see how Wade Miller feels. Mlicki pulled a muscle on his left side and left the game at the top of the third inning Saturday saying, "it felt like a knife in my side.'' The injury is expected to keep him out at least a month. Miller threw his last rehab assignment at New Orleans and the Astros wanted to see how he felt Sunday. He has missed eight starts since April 13 with a pinched nerve in his neck. ... Lance Berkman came into the day second in the majors (to Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero with 22) in RBI with two outs. Berkman has 20.

Ryan Klesko extended to 39 games his streak of reaching base via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch, slamming two homers and reaching on an error. ... Mark Kotsay had a single, double and homer Sunday and has 14 hits in his last seven games.

Milwaukee: Milwaukee fell to 2-14 in one-run games after an 8-7 loss to San Diego on Sunday. ... The Brewers finished their longest homestand of the season with a 5-8 record. "Right now, that's the kind of team we are,'' manager Jerry Royster said. ''(A record of) 5-8 is pretty good, compared to some of that other stuff we were looking at earlier.'' ... Reliever Curtis Leskanic threw 19 pitches Saturday in a rehab assignment for Double A Huntsville, pitching in back-to-back games for the first time. He allowed three hits and an unearned run. Another rehabbing reliever, Chad Fox, gave up one unearned run in a 27-pitch outing Saturday at the outset of a 30-day rehab assignment in Huntsville.

    Dodgers-Diamondbacks
Los Angeles: Starter Kevin Brown lasted just 20 pitches before he had to leave the game with pain in his surgically repaired right elbow. The Dodgers said Brown, 37, will be evaluated Monday. ... Omar Daal, who replaced Brown, threw 71 pitches in 3 1-3 innings. ... SS Cesar Izturis batted leadoff against Arizona LHP Randy Johnson. Izturis, a switch-hitter, has led off 16 times this season to 33 times for lefty Dave Roberts. Neither Izturis, who went 1-for-3, nor Roberts had faced Johnson. ... The Dodgers have not had a losing road trip this season, going 5-4, 5-1, 3-3 and 3-3 to lead the NL with a 16-11 road record. ... Shawn Green singled in the fifth to preserve a 15-game hitting streak in road games.

Arizona: LHP Randy Johnson passed Walter Johnson for eighth on the all-time strikeout list in the second inning. His five strikeouts during the game gave him 3,512 in his career -- 22 behind No. 7 Gaylord Perry. ... For the first time in three games since RF Danny Bautista was injured Wednesday, Quinton McCracken got the nod to start in right ahead of Jose Guillen. ... RHP Matt Mantei, who was hoping to come off the DL on Wednesday, has delayed his return after his elbow began throbbing. He will not resume throwing until midweek. ... The crowd of 47,388 gave the Diamondbacks 384,845 for their nine-game homestand -- second-best in history. The record is 398,667 on July 10-18 in 1998, their expansion year. ... The Diamondbacks play 13 of their next 16 on the road. ... Arizona leads the majors with the fewest errors (23), including three in its last 14 games.

On the road he has a 7.33 ERA, allowing 22 earned runs in 27 innings. "I feel comfortable wherever I've worked,'' Jensen said. "Today, I was just horrible.'' ... J.T. Snow entered with a .235 batting average, on a 6-for-37 slide. Snow didn't think three games at Coors Field brought him out of it despite a 2-for-4 day that included two doubles and two RBI. "I remember the two strikeouts my last at-bats,'' Snow said. "I still have a ways to go.'' ... The Giants head home for a four-game series with Arizona that begins Monday.

Colorado: The Rockies swept San Diego and San Francisco, marking only their second sweep of consecutive division opponents in club history; they swept the same two clubs July 11-17, 1996. ... Manager Clint Hurdle said the Rockies have "guarded optimism'' about Neagle's ability to make his next start Thursday in San Diego. If Neagle can't go, the Rockies might turn to Shawn Chacon, who is almost fully recovered from a strained pectoral muscle and is ready to return from the DL. Chacon was scheduled to throw on the side Monday at Triple-A Colorado Springs, then have a rehab start there Thursday. ... OF Benny Agbayani, on the DL with a hamstring injury, did some running drills and reported no pain. He is expected to begin a rehab assignment in Colorado Springs on Tuesday. ... The Rockies must make a decision by Friday on pitcher Chris Holt, currently 5-2 at Colorado Springs. Holt can exercise an option in his contract and ask for a release if he is not on the major league roster by June 1 or if he gets a major league offer before the deadline that the Rockies don't want to match. "The hourglass has been tipped over,'' Hurdle said.
