Hero of the day
Backup catcher Keith Osik, batting just .158 as the last player on the Pirates' bench, was the unlikely hero Monday night. He delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 win over Chicago.

Goat of the day
Rockies "ace" Mike Hampton had another horrid outing Monday. Spotted a 3-0 lead by his Colorado teammates, Hampton quickly blew it by giving up six runs in 4 2-3 innings, raising his ERA to an abysmal 6.54.

Injury report

  • Dodgers starter Kevin Brown, who left Sunday's start after only 20 pitches because of soreness in his surgically repaired elbow, was placed on the disabled list for the fifth time in two seasons -- and second time since his operation last Sept. 27 to repair a torn flexor muscle. But Dr. Frank Jobe said this latest problem is in the muscles in the back of the elbow and will not require surgery.

  • The Yankees scratched 2B Alfonso Soriano from the lineup because of a stiff left hip flexor. Soriano, who said he slipped in his hotel room shower Monday morning, will probably be given Tuesday off as well. Enrique Wilson went 0-for-4 in his place.

  • White Sox 3B Jose Valentin left in the third inning after injuring his right ankle. In pursuit of a popup, he stepped on a hose near the fence down the left-field line. Valentin said he is day-to-day.

  • White Sox OF Lofton banged his knee on the center-field wall making a nice running catch in the ninth. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom half, but is expected to be ready to play Tuesday.

  • Pirates 2B Pokey Reese didn't start Monday against the Cubs because of an injured right index finger.

  • Braves RF Gary Sheffield missed his fourth consecutive game with a strained hamstring.

  • Red Sox 2B Rey Sanchez, who left Sunday night's game with a strained right hamstring, didn't play and is doubtful for Tuesday night's game.

  • Astros starter Wade Miller is expected to be activated from the DL Wednesday and start that night.

  • Astros starter Dave Mlicki will be placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a pulled muscle in his left side.

  • Tigers DH Dmitri Young was a late scratch with an irritation of his hernia. He was on the DL in April with the injury.

    Streak of the day
The St. Louis Cardinals have won five straight series and 15 of their last 18 games.

    Stat of the day
Barry Bonds hit the 585th homer of his career Monday, moving him within one of Frank Robinson for fourth on the all-time list.

    The last word
"It's hard for me to believe with the talent we have, that we can be 20-28. If we don't get better, we're going to have to make more moves. We have a lot more talent than we're showing right now. I expect us to play with a little more sense of urgency than we've been seeing lately. That's very disappointing. That sense of urgency has been there by the teams that have been outplaying us."
-- Rangers general manager John Hart, on his team's poor start and his reshuffling of the pitching staff.

  • AMERICAN LEAGUE
    Tigers-Indians
Detroit: With his second career complete game, LHP Mark Redman improved to 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA in five lifetime starts against Cleveland. Against the rest of the majors, he's 13-19 with a 5.05 ERA. ... C Brandon Inge returned to the lineup for the first time since May 11 when he dislocated his left shoulder against Texas. Inge went 0-for-1 with a stolen base in a 4-1 win over Cleveland. Inge has injured his shoulder twice in the past year. ... RHP Jeff Weaver, who will start Tuesday's game against Cleveland, has not allowed a home run in 71 innings this season. Boston's Derek Lowe (72 1-3 innings) is the only other AL starter not to give up a homer in 2002. Weaver last gave up a homer on Sept. 18 last season -- a span of 13 starts. He pitched a one-hitter against the Indians in his last start. ... DH Dmitri Young was a late scratch with an irritation of his hernia. He was on the DL in April with the injury.

Cleveland: DH Ellis Burks, struggling at the plate since injuring his hamstring last month, homered for the second time in seven games. Burks, though, is batting just .169 (11-for-65) since getting hurt. ''I haven't had any rhythm at all,'' he said. ... After dominating their division since 1995, the Indians are just 11-19 against the AL Central this season and have dropped 14 of 16. Last year, Cleveland went 47-29 in its division. Meanwhile, the Indians are 7-1 against the AL East, but have yet to play either Boston or New York. ... How different are these Indians? On Monday, their starting outfield was Jolbert Cabrera in center, Bruce Aven in left and Chris Magruder in right. They had a collective batting average of .152 coming in with no homers and five RBI. This on a team that featured Kenny Lofton, Juan Gonzalez and Marty Cordova -- who left as free agents this winter -- in the outfield last season. ''That's who we got,'' manager Charlie Manuel said.

    Red Sox-Blue Jays
Boston: 2B Rey Sanchez, who left Sunday night's game in the seventh inning with a strained right hamstring, didn't start. ''It feels much better than it felt yesterday,'' Sanchez said. ''I definitely would love to be out there tomorrow. It's up to the trainers to determine.'' Manager Grady Little doubted Sanchez would play Tuesday. Sanchez said he tweaks the hamstring usually twice a year. He said he missed three straight games with a strained hamstring last year. Sanchez is hitting .324 and has committed just one error. ''This guy has been a valuable part of our season,'' Little said. ''He's been great both offensively and defensively.'' ... CF Johnny Damon was given a day off. ... Little said he won't start struggling 1B Tony Clark in Boston's first two games in Toronto. ''He'll probably play Wednesday,'' Little said.

Toronto: Manager Buck Martinez changed his batting order. Struggling OF Jose Cruz Jr., who usually bats fifth, hit second. ''I just can't sit back and continue to go with the status quo. We need to get Cruz going,'' Martinez said. Cruz entered hitting .218 with five home runs and 18 RBI. Cruz missed most of spring training with a strained ribcage. ''That can contribute to a slow start,'' Martinez said. ... RHP Cliff Politte, acquired from Philadelphia for LHP Dan Plesac on Sunday, joined the Blue Jays. After being used in eight of Philadelphia's first 21 games, he made just five appearances in its last 28. Politte hasn't pitched since May 17. Martinez said he wants to get Politte into a game soon. ''I wasn't getting used a lot. I don't know if they liked me there,'' Politte said. ''I'll get an opportunity to pitch here and that's what I'm looking for.''

    Twins-Rangers
Minnesota: The Twins came in 13-3 when they score in the first inning. ... Following the three-game series in Texas, the Twins have a 13-game homestand, their longest of the season.

Texas: LHP John Rocker was the winning pitcher for Triple-A Oklahoma on Monday, throwing two shutout innings and striking out three. ... RHP Jay Powell allowed one run and one hit in one inning of the same game. The Rangers expect to activate Powell from the 60-day DL later this week. Powell has been on the disabled list all season due to a finger injury on his right hand.

    Yankees-White Sox
New York: Manager Joe Torre recalled the last time the Yankees visited Comiskey Park -- in the wake of Sept. 11. ''It was a very moving time, and it was a time we had to understand that our job was to play baseball even though it wasn't the most important thing on our mind at that time. We should always remember the people who have given their lives for our freedom,'' Torre said. ... The White Sox gave former 3B Robin Ventura a seven-minute video tribute before the game. Ventura, who played for the White Sox from 1989-98 before signing with the New York Mets as a free agent, returned to Comiskey for the first time since leaving. The crowd gave the popular Ventura a brief but warm standing ovation, and he responded with a tip of the cap and some waves. ... Ventura said he would have preferred to stay with the White Sox after the 1998 season, but the Mets made him a sizable multiyear contract offer and Chicago was in a rebuilding mode. ''I wanted to stay, and they kind of wanted me to stay, but it just didn't work out. Sometimes, you just get spit out -- and I don't mean that in a bad way. That happens sometimes. It wasn't a bitter thing at all,'' Ventura said. ... LHP David Wells said some of the criticism he got last season for being out of shape was unfair because his injured back made staying in shape tough. Other than that, Wells said he enjoyed his one season with the White Sox. ''I was getting cortisone shots. If I could've lifted weights and stuff, I would've,'' said Wells, who is lighter and healthier this season. ''If I had stayed healthy I would've retired, because I wanted to go out on a high. I felt comfortable here.'' ... Torre said RHP Orlando Hernandez (strained upper back) would throw when he feels ready. Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to May 16, and has been on a rehab assignment at Class-A Tampa.

Chicago: Manager Jerry Manuel said RHP Todd Ritchie was OK one day after getting hit in the side of the face with a line drive by Detroit's Robert Fick. Ritchie stayed in the game. ... DH Frank Thomas said he was happy to see Yankees 3B Robin Ventura, who left Chicago after the 1998 season. ''He hasn't changed. He's still the same way. It's weird for me to see him in New York these past few years. He's so laid-back and it's so loud and crazy there,'' Thomas said.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE
    Expos-Braves
Montreal: Manager Frank Robinson said RHP Britt Reames would get the start Tuesday. ''He's not going any more than three innings at the most,'' Robinson said. ''He's not conditioned to go more than three right now. Then we'll go with somebody else.'' Reames is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. ... Robinson on Atlanta LHP Tom Glavine, who had his streak of 32 scoreless innings against the Expos stopped: ''He's the same as I saw two weeks ago, and he's the same Glavine I saw 10 years ago,'' Robinson said.

Atlanta: The Braves haven't made an error in six straight games, their longest streak of the season. ... Atlanta won for the 10th straight time on Memorial Day. ... RF Gary Sheffield ran the bases during the batting practice to test his strained hamstring. ''I can't be in the field if I can't score,'' he said. ... 1B Wes Helms was 0-for-1 Monday but still was productive. He walked and scored a run in the third and drove in the Braves' final run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. ... SS Rafael Furcal went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, but also struck out twice.

RHP Dave Mlicki will be placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a pulled muscle in his left side. ... Houston's comeback from a five-run deficit Sunday against the Cubs is the Astros' largest since they rallied from five runs behind against Cleveland on July 16, 2001.

    Diamondbacks-Giants
Arizona: It was the second consecutive year the Diamondbacks had visited Pacific Bell Park for Memorial Day. ... Even after their 7-3 loss on Monday, the Diamondbacks were still 10-6 against the Giants in San Francisco since the move to Pac Bell. ... Manager Bob Brenly said the home run by Barry Bonds on Monday was a perfect example of how you can't be too careful against the single-season record holder. ''He's done that to a lot of people this year. You try to be careful and limit the damage but you have such a small margin of error. If you miss, he hits it out of the park,'' Brenly said. ''He does make outs occasionally. You can pitch to him. You just can't make mistakes.''

San Francisco: Actor-comedian Robin Williams was in the Giants' clubhouse after Monday's game. ... Barry Bonds hit his 585th career home run Monday, putting him one behind Frank Robinson for fourth place on the all-time list. Bonds, who set the single-season record last year with 73, homered to the left-field bleacher seats in the fifth inning off Arizona's Brian Anderson. ... The reigning NL MVP has 18 home runs for San Francisco this season, tying him with Sammy Sosa for the major league lead. The Brewers, 5-17 on the road, will play 24 of 38 away from Miller Park before playing host to the All-Star game. ... RHP Ben Sheets, who allowed three runs and nine hits in Monday's loss, is 0-2 in his last three starts. ''The elusive number four,'' Sheets said of his victory total. ''Last year, it was the elusive number 11. I'd rather 11 would be elusive, because that would mean I had 10.'' ... The Brewers have been outscored 95-52 over the first three innings in their 51 games this season. ... Geoff Jenkins is 0-for-10 lifetime against Hideo Nomo after going hitless with two strikeouts in four at-bats against him on Monday. ... Lenny Harris extended his major league record for pinch hits to 158 with a single while batting for Jose Cabrera. He is 7-for-29 in that role this season.

Los Angeles: Shawn Green's home run in Monday's 5-3 victory over Milwaukee was his 13th of the season and 10th in seven games. ''I'm really enjoying the ride right now,'' Green said. ''But I've just got to concentrate on trying to tone it down a little bit so I don't get into bad habits. I've got to focus on hitting line drives and not think about home runs. Those will take care of itself.'' ... RHP Kevin Brown, who left Sunday's start after only 20 pitches because of soreness in his surgically repaired elbow, was placed on the disabled list for the fifth time in two seasons -- and second time since his operation last Sept. 27 to repair a torn flexor muscle. But Dr. Frank Jobe said this latest problem is in the muscles in the back of the elbow and will not require surgery. ''The specific diagnosis is hard to come by because it doesn't hurt exactly in one spot,'' said Jobe, who will give Brown an MRI exam Tuesday. ''He's got a pinched synovium, which is the lining of the joint, and maybe a sprained muscle on the back of the elbow, which causes swelling in the area and makes it difficult to pitch.'' ... LHP Omar Daal, who won both starts after replacing Brown in the rotation when he went on the DL in mid-April, again will fill the role after making a combined 97 pitches on Saturday and Sunday. ... To replace Brown on the roster, the Dodgers called up RHP Bryan Corey from Triple-A Las Vegas. Corey appeared in three games with Arizona in 1998.
