Schilling keeps quiet after win

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Curt Schilling picked the wrong time to get his game together.

Curt Schilling
Curt Schilling finally showed in his outing Friday night why the Diamondbacks traded for him, but it hardly matters now.

A day after the Giants clinched the NL West title with a victory over Arizona, Schilling pitched a four-hitter to end his five-game losing streak Friday night and lead the Diamondbacks to a 7-1 victory over San Francisco.

Schilling struck out 10 and walked one in his eighth complete game this season.

"Tonight was probably as good as I've felt all year," he said. "I felt healthy. Everything felt right."

Arizona had lost six straight, including an 8-7 defeat Thursday night that clinched the division for San Francisco.

Schilling (11-12), who made a disparaging remark about Giants star Barry Bonds to reporters after the game Thursday night, won for the first time since Aug. 18.

Expected to push Arizona over the top in the NL West after coming over from Philadelphia in July, Schilling had been 0-5 in his last six starts. He also had two singles.

Schilling and the rest of the Diamondbacks never mentioned Bonds' name after the game. Instead, talk was on the Giants' fans, who loudly booed the pitcher for his comments.

"He kind of fed off the crowd," manager Buck Showalter said. "He's a good competitor and they got his juices flowing."

The Giants clubhouse, boisterous the night before, was nearly silent after the loss.

Mark Gardner (11-7) gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings to lose for the first time in seven starts since Aug. 11.

Bonds slid on the outfield grass as he tried to field Tony Womack's hit to left to lead off the fourth inning.

Womack ended up with a triple, then scored on Danny Bautista's sacrifice fly. Luis Gonzalez walked, went to second on Steve Finley's single, then scored on Matt Williams' broken-bat single up the middle. Gardner ducked to avoid the bat.

Bonds doubled off Schilling in the bottom of the inning with two outs. Jeff Kent walked, but J.T. Snow flied out to right field to end the threat.

In the fifth, Schilling singled, went to second when Gardner couldn't get to Womack's grounder, and took third on Bautista's single to left.

Schilling and Womack scored on Gonzalez's blooper to right, and Bautista came in on Greg Colbrunn's sacrifice fly to center, giving the Diamondbacks a 5-0 lead.

The Giants avoided the shutout in the bottom of the inning. Armando Rios tripled then scored on Doug Mirabelli's sacrifice fly to center.

Womack added an RBI single and Bautista hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth.

Game notes
The feud between Bonds and Schilling apparently stems from an incident years ago when Bonds predicted a home run against Schilling and hit it. Schilling said that didn't happen ... A day after the Giants clinched, manager Dusty Baker had all his starters in the lineup. He planned to give the regulars a rest Saturday for the first game of a doubleheader, then play them again Saturday night. ... Livan Hernandez will start Game 1 of the playoffs for the Giants. Baker has not determined the rest of the playoff rotation. ... It was Schilling's 65th career complete game. ... Bautista was 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly. ... Womack was 3-for-5.
