Redman making case as AL rookie of year

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Cristian Guzman has three hits, including a two-run triple, his major league-leading 19th this season, and Danny Ardoin hit a bases-loaded double as the Minnesota Twins beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-2 Wednesday night.

Twins starter Mark Redman (12-6), who leads AL rookies in wins, strikeouts, ERA and winning percentage, gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings.

LaTroy Hawkins pitched the final two innings for his ninth save in as many chances.

Tampa Bay's Bryan Rekar (4-9) allowed only four hits through six innings but the Twins opened the seventh with consecutive singles by David Ortiz, Corey Koskie and Torii Hunter.

With the bases loaded, Jacques Jones struck out for the third time before Midre Cummings, pinch hitting for A.J. Pierzynski, knocked in Ortiz with a groundout to first. Guzman's triple to right went just over a leaping Jose Guillen and rolled to the wall.

Rekar gave up eight hits and three runs in 6 2/3 innings. He hasn't won since July 28, a span of six starts.

Ardoin's double, which came with two outs in the eighth off Doug Creek, was just his third hit since making his major league debut Aug. 2. He is 3-for-28 during that time.

Guillen's ninth home run, a 404-foot shot to right-center, gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead in the second. It was only his second homer since June 25.

Redman retired 10 straight hitters, beginning with one out in the third, before Russ Johnson singled with two outs in the sixth. Johnson scored two batters later on Fred McGriff's single to right that gave the Devil Rays a 2-0 lead.

Rekar shut down the Twins after Ortiz singled with one out in the second, until the seventh.
