PHOENIX (AP) -- Just when the Arizona Diamondbacks seemed to be making their move in the NL West, they were swept at home by the lowly Milwaukee Brewers. Curt Schilling says he deserves all the blame for loss No. 3. "I struggled. I don't know any other way to put it," Schilling said after the Diamondbacks lost to the Brewers 8-5 Wednesday night. "No way we should have lost this game tonight. I just pitched so poorly tonight I didn't give us a chance to get anything going." Mark Loretta and Luis Lopez, not exactly known for their power, homered off Schilling. "The two home runs were probably a plate width away from where I wanted them to be," Schilling said. Richie Sexson hit his third home run of the series, a two-run, 417-foot shot to center off Byung-Hyun Kim in the eighth, as the Brewers won their season-high fourth straight. They had been the only team in the majors not to win more than three in a row all season. Sexson has eight home runs in 22 games since coming from Cleveland. "We're trying to knock people off," Sexson said, "just trying to win some games and finish strong and leave a good taste in people's mouths for next season when we get the new stadium." Lopes said Sexson's big home run was impressive. "Not many people can do that. He smoked the ball," Lopes said. "Before the year is out, I'm probably going to run out of superlatives." The Diamondbacks, winners of seven in a row before being swept at home, fell 2½ games behind first-place San Francisco in the NL West and 4½ behind the New York Mets in the wild-card race. Danny Bautista drove in two runs for Arizona with a home run and a sacrifice fly. "We're 2½ out with 30-something games to play," manager Buck Showalter said. "No one thought it was going to be easy when we went to Tucson (for spring training). It wasn't easy last year and it won't be easy next year. Anything worth getting, you're going to go through some adversity, and we've certainly gone through our share of it this year." Milwaukee swept a three-game series for the second time this season and the second time in its last three series. The Brewers swept Cincinnati at home before heading out on a six-game road trip. Schilling (10-8) fell to 4-2 since coming to Arizona, allowing five runs and seven hits in seven innings. "As much fun as it is to come in here an hour after the game when you pitch well and you're a big reason why you win, it's really hard to explain how bad it feels to come in here and know that you're the reason that you lost," he said. "Really, it falls on me tonight." Jimmy Haynes (11-11) earned his second victory in seven starts, giving up four runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. Curtis Leskanic pitched the ninth for his eighth save in eight chances and second in as many nights. Milwaukee scored three in the fourth to go up 3-1. Marquis Grissom led off with a single, then scored on Geoff Jenkins' one-out double. After Richie Sexson walked, Charlie Hayes singled to drive in both runs. The Diamondbacks narrowed the lead to one, three times. Bautista drove in Steve Finley with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but Loretta led off the sixth with his career-high seventh home run to make it 4-2. In the sixth, Matt Williams doubled, then scored on Greg Colbrunn's one-out single to cut the lead to 4-3. Just the second home run of the season by Lopez with one out in the seventh boosted the Brewers' lead to 5-3. Gonzalez's sacrifice fly drove in David Dellucci to make it 5-4 in the seventh, and Bautista's 10th homer of the season cut the lead to 7-5 in the eighth. Game notesTodd Stottlemyre, sidelined since June 26 with tendinitis in his right elbow, threw 60 pitches in his first rehab appearance for Arizona's Rookie League team in Tucson. Stottlemyre said he had no pain. He has one more rehab start and is scheduled to return to the Diamondbacks rotation Sept. 2 or 3. ... Bell extended his hitting streak to 11 games. The Diamondbacks start a three-game series in New York on Friday. Arizona is 1-5 against the Mets this season, 0-3 at Shea Stadium. ...
