MONTREAL (AP) -- J.T. Snow knows you have to take advantage when
you get opportunities.
|  | | J.T. Snow had a night to remember against Montreal on Tuesday, when the San Francisco slugger belted two home runs -- including a grand slam -- and had a career-high 6 RBI. |
Snow homered twice, including his seventh career grand slam, and
had a career-high six RBIs Tuesday night to lead the San Francisco
Giants over the Montreal Expos 9-7.
"You don't get too many days like that," Snow said. "I just
had chances. I came up to the plate with guys on base and had some
opportunities to cash some in."
Vladimir Guerrero also homered twice for Montreal as the teams
combined for eight homers, tying the record for a game at Olympic
Stadium, set by the Expos and Colorado on April 5, 1997.
Snow's solo shot in the sixth off Felipe Lira (3-2) put the
Giants ahead 8-7. Snow's slam, his second of the season, came in
the first inning off Mike Johnson. Snow, who added a sacrifice fly
in the eighth, recorded his 10th career two-homer game and his
second this season.
The slam was the 11th given up by the Expos this season, tying
the NL record set by San Francisco in 1996. The 1996 Detroit Tigers
allowed a major league-record 14 grand slams.
Miguel Del Toro (1-0) allowed one hit in two shutout innings of
relief for his first major league win. Robb Nen pitched the ninth
for his 28th save in 33 chances.
"It was a big win," Giants manager Dusty Baker said. "How
about J.T. Snow and Miguel Del Toro? Everybody had a good night."
Marvin Benard homered on the first pitch he saw from Johnson,
the seventh time in his career he has hit a home run to begin a
game, and the first time this season.
"I'm as surprised as you are," Benard said. "I've never swung
at a first pitch before and for me to swing at it and hit it out,
that's kind of surprising."
After Benard's homer, Bill Mueller singled, and Barry Bonds and
Jeff Kent walked to load the bases. Snow followed with his slam,
giving the Giants a 5-0 lead.
"It was just one of those dreaded pitching moments where you
can't take what you had in the bullpen out onto the mound,"
Johnson said. "It's just kind of frustrating because I felt really
good heading into this game. That first inning just killed me,
where I went through that streak of walking Bonds and Kent, that's
what killed me the most."
Jose Vidro hit a two-run homer in the bottom half and Guerrero
followed with his 30th homer, pulling the Expos to 5-3.
Montreal took a 6-5 lead in the second on Milton Bradley's first
major league homer, a three-run shot off Kirk Rueter.
"When you run around the bases, you think about your friends
turning on ESPN and seeing that, and it's kind of nice," Bradley
said. "It was nice for the moment, because it gave us the lead,
but it didn't really last too long so we couldn't really enjoy
it."
San Francisco's Rich Aurilia hit his 13th homer to lead off the
third, and Benard hit an RBI grounder later in the inning for a 7-6
lead.
Guerrero led off the bottom half with his 31st homer, giving him
five two-homer games this season.
"Guerrero was awesome, as usual," Baker said. "Young Bradley
hit his first and Vidro hit a monster shot. It was a home-run derby
there for a while. I don't know what the final tally was, but I
know it was 4-4 at one time. I'm just glad we came back and won the
game."
Johnson allowed seven runs and five hits in two-plus innings.
Game notes
Snow, who hit a three-run homer off Johnson on May 24, also
hit a grand slam in Milwaukee on May 21 off Valerio de los Santos.
... Guerrero reached 30 homers for the third straight season. He is
the only player in Expos' history to have at least 30 homers in
more than one season.
