Sexson feeling at home in Milwaukee

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Richie Sexson is hitting exactly the way the Brewers expected him.

Sexson homered, then singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning Tuesday night to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

"He's comfortable here," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "He's in his niche right now. He's establishing himself as an everyday major league player. It was an opportunity that was presented to him to a degree last year, but this year was kind of so-so. Let's just say, we're happy to have him."

Santiago Perez drew a leadoff walk off Mark Wohlers (1-2) in the 10th, pinch-hitter Luis Lopez sacrificed and Ron Belliard walked.

Larry Luebbers relieved and walked Marquis Grissom to load the bases. After Geoff Jenkins struck out, Sexson lined a 2-1 pitch to the gap in right-center field.

"The home run was a sinker that was a pretty good pitch," said Sexson, acquired from Cleveland on July 28 for pitchers Bob Wickman, Jason Bere and Steve Woodard. "He threw a pretty good ball and I got my hands out and was fortunate to get enough lift on it to get it out of the park."

"The last at-bat, I laid off a couple of his good splits," said Sexson, who struck out three times between hits. "The first pitch, I hit just foul and felt like I jumped out in front of it a little bit. I told myself not to do that anymore and try to take it back up the middle."

Curtis Leskanic (3-3) faced one batter, striking out Chris Sexton wih runners on first and second in the 10th.

Cincinnati, held to three hits through the first six innings by John Snyder, tied it at 1 with an unearned run in the seventh.

Michael Tucker tripled to right-center with one out and continued home when the relay throw from second baseman Belliard sailed into the Reds' dugout.

Sexson gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead in the second with his fourth home run since joining Milwaukee. Sexson, who had 16 homers in 91 games with Cleveland, led off the inning by connecting off Pete Harnisch.

Sexson, who hit 31 home runs with 116 RBIs last season at Cleveland, is hitting .317 with 14 RBIs in 15 games with Milwaukee.

Snyder has not won since June 22, losing four decisions in nine starts over that span. He allowed one unearned run on four hits in eight innings.

"He pitched a little bit better than I did," Harnisch said. "It's as simple as that. It happens. We couldn't get anything going."

Cincinnati has lost two straight after sweeping the Cubs and falling 5{ games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

"Timely hitting, good defense, good pitching ... they play well against us," Barry Larkin said of the Brewers. "Give them credit, but it's frustrating, very frustrating.

"That's why we play 162 games. We're not out of it by any means. Hopefully, we can salvage the series by winning tomorrow."
