Hammonds, Cirillo each drive in four

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- Jeffrey Hammonds' three-run homer might have been aided by a fan's catch, but the Colorado Rockies, deep in a slump, aren't about to give it back.

Davey Johnson
Davey Johnson was pretty sure Jeffrey Hammonds had a little help from a fan on his three-run homer.

Hammonds and Jeff Cirillo each drove in four runs, and the Rockies snapped a three-game losing streak with a 11-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Brian Bohanon (5-7) limited the Dodgers to four hits and four runs through 6 1/3 innings and helped his cause with an RBI double and a walk.

Despite the win, the Rockies have lost 17 of 21 games. Los Angeles has won eight of 11.

After the Dodgers scored three runs in the first, the Rockies countered with six in their half against Carlos Perez (4-5). Cirillo's two-run double and Hammonds' homer highlighted the inning.

Brian Hunter, who equaled a career high with four hits, and Neifi Perez both singled and scored on Cirillo's double into the left-field corner. Todd Helton walked and Hammonds hit his 16th homer. Ben Petrick singled and Bohanon, who entered the game 0-for-19 at the plate this season, doubled into the gap in left-center for another run. Replay showed a fan caught Hammonds' drive to left-center near the top of the wall and might have reached over slightly into the field of play. Dodgers manager Davey Johnson argued it was fan interference, but his plea was rejected.

"(Hammonds) got some help and nobody else saw it," Johnson insisted. "It was pretty clear if I could see it. How come I'm the only one who can see it? I haven't gotten a call yet on a guy leaning over the damn fence."

Johnson was manager of the Baltimore Orioles in the 1996 playoffs when the Yankees' Derek Jeter was awarded a controversial homer after a young fan reached over the fence, preventing Orioles right fielder Tony Tarasco from making the catch.

"It was a good catch, a nice catch," Rockies manager Buddy Bell said. "I couldn't tell. It's three runs we would have scored anyway."

Hammonds agreed. "It would have been a double or triple anyway," he said. "I don't know. You couldn't see it with the naked eye, neither could I. It's a long way out there. I'll take it. I'm not throwing it back, that's for sure.

"I saw that in Baltimore when Jeffrey Maier did it to Tarasco. It's different when you're on the other side."

Bell was just relieved to get the win.

"Bo gave us what we needed, and we swung the bats well," Bell said. "It's important that we build on this and start winning some games."

The Rockies chased Perez in the fourth, scoring four more runs, including Cirillo's two-run single and Hammonds' RBI single.

Bohanon led off the inning with a walk, Hunter singled and Neifi Perez laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe on Carlos Perez's error on a high throw to first. Cirillo greeted reliever Matt Herges with a single between third and shortstop, Hammonds had a run-scoring single to right and Butch Huskey an infield RBI single.

The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the first and Eric Karros hit a two-run double. The other run scored on Adrian Beltre's fielder's-choice grounder.

In the third, Gary Sheffield walked, Karros doubled off right fielder Hammonds' glove and Sheffield scored on Beltre's groundout.

Johnson unsuccessfully argued another call in the first inning. Karros, caught in a rundown between second and third, was tagged out by Cirillo, who then dropped the ball. Third base umpire Eric Cooper ruled Karros was out, however.

Game notes
Before the game, the Dodgers reacquired RHP Ismael Valdes from the Chicago Cubs along with cash considerations for two minor leaguers -- right-hander Jamie Arnold and outfielder Jorge Piedra. ... The first inning, in which Colorado outscored Los Angeles 6-3, lasted 36 minutes, and Perez and Bohanon combined to throw 63 pitches. ... Perez hasn't won since May 20. He has three losses and nine no-decisions since then. ... It was Colorado's first win over the Dodgers in five meetings this season.
