MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Twins like what they see in
Mark Redman.

The rookie left-hander came within two outs of his first
professional shutout, pitching the Twins past the Cleveland Indians
2-1 Friday night.
Redman (8-4) had not allowed a runner past first base until
Manny Ramirez hit his 19th home run with one out in the ninth.
"It's an indication, I hope, of things to come for me," said
Redman, who leads AL rookie pitchers in victories, strikeouts, and
innings pitched.
Redman left after the home run and LaTroy Hawkins relieved.
Travis Fryman then singled and took third on a double by Richie
Sexson.
But Hawkins got Alex Ramirez to hit a grounder to shortstop
Cristian Guzman, who threw out Fryman at the plate, and struck out
pinch-hitter Russell Branyan to end the game.
"With the sort of game Mark threw tonight, I didn't want to be
the guy who lost it for him," Hawkins said.
Bartolo Colon (9-7) gave up eight hits in a complete game. The
Indians lost their third in a row.
Colon pitched well but he was no match for Redman, who gave up
six hits, struck out six and walked one.
Redman has won three straight starts and four of his last five
decisions.
"I'm excited for him," interim Minnesota manager Ron
Gardenhire said. "He threw the ball well tonight. Our rookies are
beginning to resemble (Brad) Radke more and more. Things are
starting to fall into place."
Redman is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in two starts against the Indians
this season.
"He changed speeds well," Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel
said. "He was hitting the corners well and stayed ahead in the
count most of the night."
David Ortiz had two hits, drove in a run and scored one to lead
the Twins' offense. His streak of eight consecutive hits ended one
short of the Twins record when he grounded out in the second
inning.
In the fourth inning, however, Ortiz started another streak with
an RBI single that drove home Matt Lawton, who had doubled.
Ortiz lined a one-out single in the sixth and scored on Corey
Koskie's double into the right-field corner.
That was just enough for Redman.
"I got some help in the field tonight but I did feel good all
night," Redman said. "I threw more curves than usual tonight
because I wanted to give them something to think about."
Redman, a Twins' first-round draft pick in 1995, now has the
most wins by a Minnesota rookie since Brad Radke won 11 in 1995.
His only trouble before Ramirez homered came in the third when
Jolbert Cabrera led off with a double and was sacrificed to third.
Redman struck out Omar Vizquel and Jim Thome to end the threat.
"His location was good tonight," said Travis Fryman, who had
three singles, two off Redman. "He set us up with his fastball and
threw that changeup."
Redman, whose previous longest major league outing was seven
innings, said he wasn't necessarily looking for a shutout when he
started the ninth inning.
"I just wanted to challenge them and let whatever happens,
happen," Redman said.
Vizquel tied the AL record for shortstops by playing his 95th
straight game without an error. He matched the mark set by Cal
Ripken in 1990, while the major league record is 101 by Rey Ordonez
of the New York Mets.
Game notes
Indians 2B Roberto Alomar has tendinitis in his left ankle
and did not accompany the team to Minneapolis. He is scheduled to
rejoin the team Tuesday in Toronto. ... Thome singled in the sixth
inning to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games. ...
Twins manager Tom Kelly rejoined the team an hour prior to
gametime, but did not manage the game. Kelly had been in Fort
Myers, Fla., since the All-Star break tending to his ailing father.
Gardenhire, the third base coach, has handled the team in Kelly's
absence, posting a 5-4 won-loss record. "I expect Tom to be back
in charge tomorrow night," Gardenhire said. ... Twins pitchers
have given just two runs in their last 25 innings.
