OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Mo Vaughn didn't let getting hit in the
helmet affect his vision or his playing time.

Vaughn homered and drove in five runs and Garret Anderson hit a
three-run homer as the Anaheim Angels defeated Tim Hudson and the
Oakland Athletics 12-3 Friday night.
Vaughn was hit in the helmet just above the eye in the first
inning Thursday night by Texas' Darren Oliver.
He stayed in that game and was back in the starting lineup on
Friday. Vaughn walked in his first at-bat, giving him five free
passes in succession, then after grounding out twice, hit a
three-run homer and two-run double.
"I just wanted to get out there and play," said Vaughn. "I
had some swelling, but it was nothing."
Hudson (10-3) had his nine-game winning streak snapped. He
allowed a career-high nine runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings in his
first loss since April 20 at Cleveland.
"I felt strong out there, but I didn't make good pitches,"
said Hudson, who has a career mark of 21-5. "Even when I did make
good pitches, they hit them hard."
Matt Walbeck also homered for the Angels and Orlando Palmeiro
scored four runs and tied his career high with four hits as the
Angels won their eighth game in the last 11.
Jarrod Washburn (6-2) won his third straight decision, allowing
one run on three hits in six innings.
"Every one is stepping up right now," said Washburn. "We're
just pitching well and doing our job. I just tried to make them put
the ball in play as early in the count as I could."
Walbeck's home run gave the Angels a 1-0 lead in the second.
Palmeiro opened the third with a single and one out later, Tim
Salmon singled to set up Anderson's homer, his 27th, a career high,
and his first since July 3.
"Our guys jumped on mistakes," said Angels manager Mike
Scioscia. "You have to give our guys credit to get to (Hudson) the
way we did. he's an outstanding pitcher. You're not going to get to
him like that very often."
Matt Stairs hit his 16th homer in the Athletics fourth.
The Angels responded with two runs in the fifth on RBI singles
by Anderson and Adam Kennedy.
With one out in the sixth, Darin Erstad walked and Palmeiro
singled ahead of Vaughn, who hit his 25th homer of the season and
ended Hudson's night. Hudson has now allowed 19 home runs this
year.
"He's not going to be lights out every night," A's manager Art
Howe said. "It was just one of the those nights for him, that's
all."
Vaughn added a two-run double and Salmon doubled home a run in
the eighth.
Olmedo Saenz drove in a run in the eighth and Terrence Long
singled home a run in the ninth for the A's.
Game notes
The Angels have homered in a season-high 12 consecutive
games. ... The A's announced LHP Barry Zito will be recalled from
Triple-A Sacramento to make his major league debut on Saturday. ...
Salmon had struck out at least once in 10 consecutive games before
going 3-for-5 with a walk. ... Stairs hit career home run No. 117
in an Oakland uniform, which passes Joe Rudi for 10th on the team's
all-time list. ... Erstad has 158 hits through 97 games, which
continues to be on pace to set the all-time season hit mark. ...
A's catcher Ramon Hernandez threw out his third baserunner in two
games.
