Hoffman nails it down for San Diego

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- After committing a major league-leading 81 errors in the season's first half, the San Diego Padres didn't mind winning a game on a Mariners miscue.

M's Henderson hit on elbow, not sure about Friday
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Rickey Henderson was hit by a pitch on the left elbow in the third inning Thursday and later left the Seattle Mariners' game against the San Diego Padres.

Henderson was hit by a pitch from rookie Brian Tollberg with two outs in the third. He remained in left field for the third and fourth innings, but was replaced by Raul Ibanez in the top of the fifth.

Henderson said he doesn't know if he'll play Friday night. "It's real sore and kind of stiff," Henderson said. "We'll have to see what happens."

Manager Lou Piniella said he took out Henderson because he couldn't throw once the elbow stiffened.

Phil Nevin scored from second on shortstop Carlos Guillen's fielding error with two outs in the 10th inning and the Padres beat Seattle 2-1 Thursday.

"Certainly we didn't have too many things go our way in the first half. It's kind of nice to have somebody else kick the ball around and help us win the game," said Dave Magadan, whose bases-loaded walk forced in San Diego's first run.

Brett Tomko (4-3) retired Al Martin and Ryan Klesko to open the 10th, but then walked Nevin and Bret Boone, the second time in three innings a Seattle reliever got two outs and then put two men on.

Wiki Gonzalez hit a routine grounder to Guillen, who let the ball bounce off the heel of his glove and into center field as Nevin rounded third and headed home.

"Speed kills," the Padres' third baseman joked.

Guillen has played shortstop since All-Star Alex Rodriguez suffered a concussion on Friday night while trying to break up a double play against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I had trouble locating the ball after it bounced away," Guillen said. "When I couldn't find it, that was the game. I thought I had a play, but the ball bounced too far into the outfield."

The Mariners had the best first half in franchise history, going 51-35 and taking the lead in the AL West. The Padres, last in the NL West since May 1, had been 9-16 in one-run games. "I thought we played a good, crisp game," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.

Trevor Hoffman (2-3), San Diego's only All-Star, pitched the 10th for the win. He and fellow relievers Kevin Walker and Donne Wall held the Mariners to just one hit and a walk in three shutout innings after rookie Brian Tollberg pitched seven strong innings.

"Some games that we let slip away earlier in the year were kind of this type of ballgame," Hoffman said.

Mariners starter Freddy Garcia cruised through six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, before running into trouble in the seventh.

Garcia allowed a one-out double to Boone, hit Ruben Rivera with two outs and then walked rookie Kevin Nicholson before the Mariners brought in Jose Paniagua to face Magadan, who has struggled as a pinch-hitter. Magadan fell behind 1-2, but drew a walk to force in Boone with the tying run.

That ended Seattle's streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings, but Paniagua got Eric Owens to fly out to end the inning.

"That's on me," Garcia said. "I missed a couple of pitches there that really hurt."

Garcia, who beat the Padres twice as a rookie last year, was making just his second start since April 21, the day before he was put on the disabled list with a a fractured right leg. He allowed one run and four hits in 6 2-3 innings.

Tollberg allowed five hits and one unearned run in seven innings for his third straight no-decision. He struck out five and walked one.

Game notes
Rodriguez worked out with the team trainer and took batting practice, but said he doesn't expect to play until Sunday or Monday. "I feel as good as I have the last couple of days," Rodriguez said. ... The Padres put C Carlos Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back. San Diego also recalled RH Carlos Almanzar from Triple-A Las Vegas and demoted RH reliever Carlos Reyes. Hernandez's move was retroactive to July 6. Hernandez was on the DL from April 7-22 with a groin injury. ... Seattle's Edgar Martinez, reduced to pinch-hitting since the series is in an NL ballpark, hit a pinch-hit single in the 10th inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. ... Padres pitchers Brian Boehringer and Carlton Loewer had their injured right shoulders examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum of the Anaheim Angels and are likely to have surgery, trainer Todd Hutcheson said. An MRI taken earlier shows fraying or tearing in Loewer's rotator cuff, Hutcheson said. Boehringer, who had rotator cuff surgery last August, is on the DL a second time with a strained shoulder. Loewer hasn't pitched yet this season. He broke his left leg in an offseason hunting accident, then once that healed, his shoulder problem developed. ... The Padres have used the DL a major league-high 19 times.
