McGriff's 4 hits, 8th-inning rally boost Rays

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Fred McGriff had four hits, including a home run, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays scored four times in the eighth inning to beat the Texas Rangers 9-7 Saturday night.

McGriff went 4-for-4 in his first four-hit game this season as Tampa Bay won its second straight and improved to 14-8 since May 31.

Rick White (3-4) allowed two runs in 1 1-3 innings for the win. Roberto Hernandez pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 15 opportunities.

The Rangers made three errors and at 33-39 fell six games below .500 for the first time since April 30.

With the score tied at 5 in the eighth, Mike DiFelice hit a two-run homer off Tim Crabtree (1-5). The Devil Rays added two more runs off Crabtree, who gave up four runs on four hits in 1-3 of an inning.

Rafael Palmeiro hit a two-run homer off White in the ninth to make it 9-7.

After hitting singles in his first three at-bats, McGriff pulled a 3-2 pitch from Francisco Cordero into the right-field bleachers in the top of the seventh inning to give Tampa Bay a 5-4 lead.

Dave Martinez answered for Texas in the bottom of the inning with his third home run of the year to tie the game at 5-5.

Royce Clayton hit his second home run in as many nights, improving to 11-for-58 in his last 19 games.

Ryan Glynn made his second start of the year for the Rangers and gave up four runs, two earned, nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. Texas recalled Glynn from Triple-A Oklahoma Friday to replace lefty Darren Oliver, who went on the DL June 21 because of weakness in his left shoulder.

Tampa Bay's Bryan Rekar gave up four runs on seven hits in four innings before being replaced by Doug Creek.

Texas scored twice in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead on Clayton's RBI groundout, and Green's RBI single.

Tampa Bay scored one run in each of the first three innings while Texas got solo home runs from Clayton and Frank Catalanotto.

Game notes
With his 12th home run, Clayton is two shy of his career high of 14, set lasts eason. Four of his 12 home runs this season have come against Tampa Bay. ... Glynn left the game because of a blister on his right index finger. ... Palmeiro's homer stopped a streak of 14 straight games without an extra-base hit. ... The 48,256 in attendance marked the second-largest regular season crowd in the seven-year history of The Ballpark in Arlington. An opening-day crowd of 49,332 on April 3, is the largest regular season crowd.
